Movie Review: Untraceable

Diane Lane plays an FBI agent in the Cybercrimes division, who gets a tip to investigate a website - killwithme.com. The website, even though it's streaming live, is untraceable, and they need to use other investigative methods to find their brilliant psychotic. The killer streams his murders live, and the speed with which his victims dies is directly proportional to the number of viewers to his website.

Untraceable was unimpressive. The film takes too long to address its primary issue - of the sadistic voyeuristic streak in Americans. By the time the issue is addressed, the movie is over. The movie is too busy tap dancing around the question it wants to address. What follows is a quite predictable mediocre thriller, and left me wishing they stuck more with the question of what's happening to our society's sick fascination with death and voyeurism.

What was terrific was the cinematography. The gloomy and dark imaging made you feel depressed and hopeless. It was excellent in portraying the hopeless pursuits of the FBI.

If you aren't much of a thriller moviegoer, skip it. If you like thrillers, wait for the DVD.

Good, honest review. My daughter saw this and it made her feel sick. She's a thriller fan, but this one grossed her out.

Heh... I've avoided this movie so far, not just because it's a 'thriller' - and my family generally doesn't like those - but because there's a small part of my brain that says 'can't they just remove killwithme.com from the DNS root servers and thereby destroy his ability to obtain the views he wants?' I dunno. Maybe he's supposed to be a master hacker who installs it in every root file out there through a spyware-laced banner, and is impervious to denial-of-service attacks. Maybe it's just designed to convince stupid criminals that they can get away with crimes on the Internet. I don't know, but I have a feeling the answer isn't going to be satisfying at all, and certainly not worth watching to find out.

Austin: I had that problem with the movie too! You have GOT to be kidding me if you think some wiener is truly "untraceable". This isn't some silly email spam with a spoofed IP trail - it's a server running real-time streaming video! But I digress.
