I'm Ready For Spring! Are You?

We were forecast to have yet another winter storm last night with a total of 3-7 inches of snow and then high winds all day today, gusting to 50 MPH.  I'm happy to report that neither of those reports were accurate.  The winter storm warnings lately have been amazingly accurate up til now.  I got about an inch of snow and the wind did blow quite a bit during the night. The sun is shining today and the snow is MELTING!! Hooray!! It's up to 40 degrees and the main roads are actually DRY! We haven't seen that in quite a while.

The road in front of my place is still very compact snow and ice and isn't really beginning to melt yet.  My neighbor has kept my driveway plowed so I can see the cement in a few places.  I just went out and scraped off the top later of icy slush from my sidewalk. I'm going to do that again in an hour and hope to get down to the sidewalk soon.

I'm thinking of getting some plastic flowers and putting out in the snowbanks around my house for a hint of spring time! The snowbank in front of my house is about 3 feet tall.  My neighbor piled up the snow from both of our driveways and from the front of our mailboxes out there. That's going to be quite a while in melting.

How is the weather around you? What are you doing to get ready for spring?

Hi Wilma. I've been thinking what perennials I want to buy this Spring, but that's about all. Nothing here yet to get my Spring Fever revved up.

Wilma, I love the idea of planting plastic flowers in the snow!

We haven't had any to speak of. Now tornados we've had them! Current count was there was 16 tornados this week. I sure thought it was winter?!?

I can't even begin to think about spring. Last year, I kept reading about the flowers that were bursting forth and the veggies that all of my Gather friends were growing while we were still under freeze warnings. It didn't become spring here until early May last year. The news on Gather made me distraught.

This year, I refuse to think about it. I'll hibernate, wear fuzzy jammies and read. I'll write, drink cocoa and build fires. I'll relish every moment of winter and not anticipate spring until it's much closer. I can't deal with it the way I did last year.

So, now I'm grabbing my blankie and sulking.

I am just so thankful we didnt get the tornadoes that happened around Lynn's state. All the factors were here. And of course I was out traveling to and from Dr. offices.
The three days of 70 and almost 80 degree weather was supposed to turn to horrible weather with hail and lightening storms. The lightening did come. But otherwise we were okay.

We did change temperatures, that is why I was up falling all over the place, trying to get things shut up and warmed up in the house. The sudden change from the hot to the cold and all the things going on in the upper atmosphere is what causes things like the tornadoes.

I just consider us so fortunate here in Texas to have missed all that action. To answer your question. I love Spring. But it doesnt love me. The allergens outside. The pollen from the pine trees and cedars. The fresh cut grass nearly kills my allergies. I dont stand a chance in any weather, I am just proud to be alive with all this junk that makes my system crazy.

Wilma, we have a while before spring over here in the north east but you'd be surprised what signs of spring you can find if you search. Our snow has melted but we're not in the clear yet. It's been known to snow here in April.

Sun? What is the sun? We are wet, flooded (not near my house) and depressing here. My winters blahs are really peaking...I did get out of the house when my husband got home and went to Walmart. He bought me red tulips to put on the kitchen counter to try to help my mood!

Tinch, I have my bags packed and I'm heading to your house. 70 degrees?? Sounds like a dream!

Bob, what's wrong with plastic flowers in the snow? At least, it would add a touch of color to the huge piles of frozen ice in front of my house.

I went out 2 more times and tried to chip ice out of my sidewalk but finally gave up. I have to walk a thin line between trying to get something done and not hurting my neck.

It's supposed to be 37 here tomorrow with partly cloudy skies, so maybe I can get a little more ice chipped away.

I'm glad we don't have any tornadoes around here. Those were terrible the other day.

It's snowing again! This has been one of Michigans worst storms since 1973 they are saying! I believe it. I remember when I was a kid we used to get way more snow than we do now. GLobal warming...I believe that is the culprit. CU girl...gotta run for now!

I'm tired of winter too but... I want Spring to wait until the snow is really gone because otherwise all the fruit trees will be flowered out and we'll have that last storm and it will all be lost. I hate it when that happens. Last year we had no cherries, and only a handful of apples. I want more this year.

My icon is the snow from the most recent storm on our Sweetgum tree, right outside my office window. It comes and then goes quickly. We rarely shovel snow. I picked this place on purpose because I can't shovel.

Spring here is June. In June we should be packing up to move, so I may not get to plant this year. I could use planter boxes, I guess?

I think Magi, Krissy, Tinch and Norma should share their heat with those of us shoveling snow!! I haven't even been outside to try and break up more ice on my sidewalk today. I should do that again pretty soon. It's only 33 out so not as much melting as yesterday. I don't care if it's a slow melt, just so it melts.

Deb J, I saw that you were really having a bad storm. Stay warm.

Thanks, Deb D for the plastic flower encouragement. I will be sure to take a picture if I actually get some out there in my snow!

It's in the low 30's again today. As long as the snow continues the slow melt, that's fine with me. There is a lot of concern around here about flooding. The southern part of our county had to shut down all the roads yesterday in the rural areas - too much blowing and drifting snow to safely keep them open. So lots of people are isolated at their homes. Hopefully, the roads will get opened today.

Wilma what a terriffic idea. I have actually gotten tired of wasting my money in the summer and made flower beds with silk flowers in them. It was more productive. I can plant veggies but flowers just will not cooperate with me. I try to buy at least one new live plant each year and try to keep it alive.

Most of the time my flower planting efforts are only temporary. The rose bush that I use for my icon so far in 25 years is the only thing that so far has been a permanent thing. I planted 17 plants, it took another 10 years to produce a rose. It took a lot of patience.

I know the feeling Elsie. I'm not sure what our temp was all day as I spent most of the day in bed with this lousy cold. I noticed at one time it was 37 and the snow pack continues to shrink. I have a huge lake at the foot of my driveway now if anyone wants to go swimming.

Reached the 70's today, similar temps tomorrow. Good weather for hiking with bears and meerkats, especially with a good book to read and a couple of energy bars for snacks. Perhaps you should visit Arizona for a well-deserved respite from the onslaught of the cold season. Sky Harbor Airport is only 30 minutes from Mesa, Wilma!

Come Wilma
Come to Pretoria. Autumn has just started and so it's warm but a cool breeze makes it feel like a paradise,
I''ll even bring you a multi coloured rink filled with cherries and a tiny little umbrella.
Snow??? What's that??

My daughter was off school again today because of the heavy drifting last night and the temps. I am ready to get that girl back in school!! She's getting too smarty mouthed for me! She's at her grandparents for the day...whew...needed abreak! I've got myself a sinus infection too, that is driving me nuts!

Fred, Snow is a 4 letter word and looks like huge piles of drandruff. Deb is the only person in Michigan who likes snow.

Yesterday, my wife sent me to the grocery store around 5 p.m. I used my daughter's car. It has the temperature in the corner of the rear view mirror. The temperature read

LOVE the plastic flowers, Wilma!! It DOES look just like spring there now.

Send your snow on over to the coast. My boys will gladly shovel it, if they can get another day or two off school. Unfortunately they've missed the last two Saturday ski bus trips to Stevens' Pass because of all the snow in the Cascades (maybe more unfortunately for their parents than for them, lol).

William, you can always shorten the dress and make a matching one for your Barbie doll out of the remnant.

Not much snow right now but plenty of wind and cold. Storm may come by tomorrow night--or might not. 50% change the weatherman is right..or wrong :-)

The other day I showed Papa your article...once you posted the plastic flowers. In a brown bag on the table I had plastic flowers from the cemetery (used and thrown over the fence) that I needed to cut down for the Chinese New Year hats (yes, these cemetery plastic flowers come in handy).

In the afternoon I went up and took a nap and when I came downstairs and went out on the porch to have a cigarette, what do I see but the plastic flowers growing. I'm going to send Papa to you UPS and together you can have "a plastic Spring"!

Hooray for Papa!! A man after my own heart! That is so funny, Bob, especially after you were telling me NOT to plant them!!

Bill, -15 is just a bit too cold. We haven't been down that low this year and that is fine with me. It's still melting around here; my driveway is almost clear finally!

Bill, those are beautiful flowers. Thanks. Wish I really had such a pretty bouquet.

Laurun, that doesn't sound like a good combination of a broken septic system and cold weather.
