Do you prefer a link to something or the actual article in an article?

Some post a link to a cool site, others copy/paste the actual thing...which do you all prefer?

If it's not the poster's original content, I'd prefer a link, but I'd also much more prefer that the person posting had some sort of their own content attached - like information about what you'll find, etc, and not just a sentence.

Actually you need to be careful about copyright laws if you copy and paste an actual article.

I'm not positive about all the laws, but if it is not your own article, and you "don't" have permission, I think you can only copy and paste some small parts together with your commentary and a link. If permission is given, then you can do it all, but make sure you give credit I think.
If it is your article from another website, I actually prefer to read the whole thing here and not have to go link chasing so to speak, ha ha.

thank you for asking I like to have what the essay is all out ready for me to see. To go skipping around looking to see what it is that that person is trying to show me is no fun. I am not good with computers I am happy to find myself on your site reading and posting but I don't like to jump around much..

Both. When I paste an article I usually give the link also. If not at the very least I say who wrote it or where it came from.

On Gather I prefer to see the article right there, since the editing software on Gather doesn't allow us to post a link without all kinds of fancy html.

I prefer both - put the link up top, and paste the article below. It's not unusual for me to have to do a lot of offline work, and I'll load up a dozen or so websites and view them offline. If there's only a link, I can't read the article when I'm offline, and it has to wait until I'm back online.

I will not click on a link that takes me to somewhere other than gather for fear of picking up whatever---spyware, cookies, etc. that I don't want attached to my computer. I really don't like it---in fact, I hate it---when someone sends me (ala mass mailing) a link to somewhere and they don't say what it is for or the fact that it takes me off gather. That will earn them a disconnect from me. Yeah, it's one of my pet peeves.

I think if it isn't your own article, the safest bet is to post a link to it. Just be sure to tell us what is about, so we'll know if we want to read it or not.

I prefer a link if it is from a newspaper or a magazine but if it is something that is written by the author of the post than I prefer the article itself.
