 | You can easily locate all Gather mail messages received from a specific member, or quickly access older messages by using the sort options available in Gather mail. How is this done? Each of the column headings (Subject, From, To, Date) in your Gather Mail 'Inbox' and 'Sent' box can be used to sort messages. Clicking once on any heading will initiate a sort of all messages by that element. For example, by default, you will initially see a small arrow displayed to the right of the 'Date' column heading. This arrow will point downward, indicating that the Gather Mail messages are sorted by date, in descending date order (newest on top). Clicking the 'Date' column heading, or the arrow, will change the sort sequence to ascending, which will bring the oldest messages to the top.
This technique can be used to sort mail messages by sender, recipient, and subject as well. Thereby grouping similar messages together, or messages received by, or sent to, a particular member. These columns are sorted alphabetically. Sorting Gather Mail messages in this manner can be very helpful. However, Gather displays only 25 messages per page. Therefore, depending upon the quantity of mail messages in your 'Inbox' or 'Sent' box, you may still be required to scroll through multiple pages to access grouped messages of interest. However, you can easily increase the number of messages displayed per page by following the technique outlined in this SiteWizard article. Tomorrow's Tip ...streamlining your Gather experience!

| | "Some members have added 'clickable' links to their comments or mail messages. I would like to create links to direct members to my new group or article...so how is this done?" Creating a link is very easy to do, and can be a great way to connect members to other content on Gather. Outlined below is the method to use when creating links to other articles, images, videos or Gather groups. This will also allow you to create links to other websites outside of Gather. Please note that this only applies to the creation of links within comments and mail messages on Gather. Creating links from articles requires a different technique, outlined in this SiteWizard article. There are three primary parts to a link command: 1) The URL (website address) you are linking TO. 2) The text, or image that you want to link FROM. 3) The HTML coding to make it all work. Until you get comfortable typing the commands from memory, you might want to save the basic HTML 'code' somewhere, and then paste it into your comment/message. Then, modify as required. This is the basic HTML command for making a link:
To create your link, you would: - Paste, or type the HTML command as shown above.
- Add the URL you are linking TO after the equal (=) sign (in red, below). This can be an article, image, video, group, namespace, or website.
- Add the text you want to make INTO the link between the >< marks.
(in blue, below)
So, a link to the Gather homepage, like this: Gather homepage Would be typed like this:
You may find it useful to practice linking within a Gather mail message you send to yourself, as the technique for inserting links in messages is identical to that used in comments. You may also publish a test article to 'Just Me' and practice in the comment area, as the comments and article are only visible to you. | |

I am hopeful that Gather will be able to determine what happened, and recover the article and comments.
Topics covered yesterday:
Content Searching - Part II & Easy Group Banner Creation
You can delete all of your mail messages at one time...with just a few clicks of the mouse. I outline that technique in this article.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
I am fairly certain that your computer will be able to create links without any difficulty.
...and yes, it works in comments as well as mail messages. :-)
So thanks a lot for all the tips.
Yes...the Gather DateBook and Daily Digest will both return tomorrow! I was hoping to have changes ready by Sunday, February 3, but work has been hectic this week. Plus, I ran into a few snags in getting the SiteWizard launched, which took up more time than I expected.
Look for it tomorrow morning! :-)
I hope they retrieve that article Kevin.
Currently there is no way to turn off your mailbox, or to refuse all mail, except for blocking members one at a time. :-(
Do you run your code through a validator before you use it on the net?
If you are referring to the lack of quotation marks surrounding the URL, Gather does not require this for mail messages or comments, and the directions above are valid for any browser or operating system.
I removed the quotation marks in this case for simplification, and because they are unnecessary.
This instruction is intended solely for use on Gather...using elsewhere may provide different results.
Anyway, my Cheat Sheet has lines of the code, like this...
I just highlight the red area and copy and paste the URL in, and then highlight the blue, typing in the text that I want showing as my link.
I then copy the whole line into my comment.
Easy as pie.
I added the BOLD code because I like my links to standout. :-)
Like stated before, I am not attacking your code for fun, I am just trying to make sure there is no disconnect in what is the right way to do things and what is the shortcut to do things. Pretty much everyone on gather looks up to you and what you say is golden. What I said above is actually protecting your behind.
Sorry Buddy, I will leave this subject alone.
I understand your point, and I do greatly appreciate the input. When it comes to the article editor, I am very sensitive to the potential for change, and as we know things seem to change with every update. :-(
Prior to conveying any information/instruction I weigh the easiest method (often a shortcut) versus the 'proper' or accepted standard, and factor in my experience on Gather. Since I try to make things as easy as possible (especially for those members with no experience in HTML), I determined that eliminating quotation marks is an acceptable risk, and is less intimidating to the HTML 'newbie'...at least for the coding in mail messages and comment boxes.
For the past 2 years this shortcut has worked and has weathered every update (thus far), so I'm betting that it will stick around. However, you raise a very valid point, and I will include a qualifying statement when I publish this as a stand-alone article later this week.
Thanks....and please, always feel free to point things out like this...as it will ultimately lead to more accurate information for the community.
The SiteWizard LIVE CHAT option is only available when I am online and able to chat directly. When the live chat option is offline, please feel free to leave a comment (on any SiteWizard article), or send me a Gather mail message. I can typically provide a response fairly quickly. Thanks!
