I would write a song on compassionate care of our elderly. I would write something akin to Bette Midler's " Hello in There" , which encourages people to communicate and not forget our elderly population. Being a geriatric nurse of 25 plus years, old folks and their importance to society is very near and dear to my heart.

I think if there is one thing that tears at my heart the most, it is children that are abused and/or harmed. For most, their lives are changed forever, yet the perpetrator continues to live as normal inside, with little if any punishment to fit the crime it seems.
Even if they are imprisoned for long times, the damage done is not material, and no justice is fully found. How anyone can harm a child is beyond my reasoning...
Thanks.

This is a cool idea! I'd like a song about keeping secrets and what it does to us as a society when our government keeps so many, and when we keep so many from each other. I'd like to see information flowing more freely in the world.

Nice video! Can't wait to hear the new album.

I'd write about global warming , helping our environment to recover from all the damage we've done to it and causing less damage on a personal level when our governments won't step up and take any sort of national responsibility.

This is so tough for me. I am involved with passionate fervor with many issues. I think my number one would be single parents raising their children all alone, Something that mentions all the lonely walks they take, at the doctors, struggling with work, and the raising of their children, and the beating they take going through life alone.

Next would be the plight of our returning soldiers. Oh! What songs these two could be.

Next would be the children who are missing, so people would remember to always watch for them, little souls,, teenagers, ripped from safety and love, so the sicko s know America is not going to give up on stopping the use of children in any way, and that the families get help and support.

I to was in nursing, for ten years, and tho many think they will be young forever, the will not, and those gentle hands I held many times, or tears I dried because they are so forgotten in their little clothes. Those hands helped to shape lives, and people, and build a nation. We pay little attention to those sitting in the "warehouse's they end up in, helpless, abused, fed horrible food, and negleted. I went through five years keeping my mother home, and and almost as much with her in a home. The doctors made me, as I had a by pass. I went everyday, and every weekend, and I still had to write legislators, and no one came. I still could not keep her safe. Or her friends. I believe in all the issues, and they all tear your heart apart. I live fearfully as I get older, and the younger generation needs to think about that, they are going there every day. The abuse and just bingo for adults needs to change.

Those who suffer with incurable diseases, Aids,,, forms of cancer, the disabled, all need the strong of Amrica to speak for them, and then get something going. And Kudos to you Ms. Crow, you make our Mo. proud, and bless you for this effort. You, with that God given gift of voice, can reach many more at one time. Thanks for this, and again, God bless you. I was sent a link tonight (Feb. 2, 2008) from Esthero, who appeared in the original video and song. This project inspired me beyond words. I decided to figure out the guitar chords, print out the lyrics and record this version live, in one take on my laptop. I did this all within an hour or so of seeing the clip for the first time. This was a completely improvised musical performance; I did the best I could.

I am a singer-songwriter from New York; I hope you enjoy my version of this song and can take something away from the intention behind the project. I am going to post more about the song and the chords for anyone looking to learn and perform it.

Yes, we can.

I used G, Bm, Em and C.
Bridge is Am, C, G - Cm at the end of the bridge; I added that chord as a turn around.

Sheryl,

If I were going to write a song about something that means a lot to me it would be 2 discs long! The current administration is in such chaos, and detached from the American people. I would want to write about the war in Iraq, The Economy, As a Massachusetts resident my right to walk down the aisle with the man of my choice and not worry that my basic rights are going to be taken away from me, Education for the youth of America, Violent crime, and the list would go on and on.

Well, there are a few things to get you started. Let me know what you come up with!

I love your older work and am sure this CD is going to be just as good. Thanks for caring!

I'd write about the division this country is facing. We are so divided now...where are we headed? I hate you for your politics. You hate me. It's all wrong... can't anyone see?
We've got to get back together, to make this land one. Your politics, your hate..they're all so misplaced. Do ya get what I'm saying? We gotta stop the hate. We gotta get back together or what'll be our fate?
I'm tired of voting for the lesser of two evils. We need a strong president that cares for his peoples. The constitution is dying... then where do we go? I don't have the answer.. hey buddy... do you know?

You take it from there.

I'm working on my first cd for family and friends at my house. My ideas for topics are:
1)The war and how it takes our sons, brothers, fathers, mothers, sisters and robs us of memories for the blood of the world...oil.
2)How we let patients suffer in the cold dark world of insurance scandal and robotic charts that can't help us because they are blind like justice used to be
3)How we consume our world like a piece of pie and watch it wither and die
4)How we as a society are sheep to the leaders and question no one, even when it's time to say enough is enough.
5)Poverty rips through America that doesn't shine but falls apart under the crumpling currency of the dollar slips out the door and the middle class lose their way
6)We've cheated our children out of sunny days without sunscreen and hope--only black oil out of our cars to save time
7)A terrorist is only the side that is not on your side
8)I've walked on bourbon and the smell of jasmine in the air but not today only broken concrete and poverty as those in charge worry about how they smile

Just some ideas and I will post them on my website when they are finished. It's amazing that society lets all injustice slip by them...man it's time for a resurgence of artists like Sheryl Crow, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and John Lennon to voice what the people should say during the election!

Just regarding the music that I am working on for each track:
1) Tuning: DADGAD (Line 6 Accoustic)
2) Standard 12 bar blues with quick turnaround in E for the chorus for the versus standard E to B rotation with a shuffle beat (Epiphone)
3) Em blues with a drone G note in the intro (Ovation)
4) Dm/E/Am/mute (Ovation)
5) Nashville tuning (Line 6 Accoustic)
6) C/em/F in 5/8
7) Style of "Nobody knows you when you are down in out" in C
8) Piano and Guitar: blues in the key of A with a Dixie Shuffle

What a great idea Cheryl, the best way to get them to listen is to tell them what they love to hear about.
I'd like a good song about getting old. I'm at the age now where the first love songs don't hold meaning any more (been there done that), I'm not planning on feeling blue and getting divorced or kicking anyone to the curb, my children are grown and moved on to families of their own, but I'm still me inside, not as young, not as cool, but with the same heart, same feelings and a new outlook on life. I'm moving on at the age of 60 and need a song I can relate too with the same passion that I held for the love songs when I was in my twenties! Can you help me out?

I have been picking up pieces of the "Super Tuesday" on NPR and CNN...what a pair? It is actually appaling the lack of leadership in the country, particularly in the governance of our country provided by the constitution. As far as the "two" sides are concerned there are only 2 points of view, and both acknowledge each other as one big PARTY. After the last, what 16 years if I put them end to end of getting promises of everything better and everything changing we, the hardworking heroes of our own worlds are stuck on the outside, busy bringing things to the "party"(s) that we cannot even get into. Nothing changes, nothing of substance except the resistance growing against those who live to do the right thing.

So what is my point??? I would write a song about people of the heart, winning the country (and the planet for that matter) back from the people of the party... And winning the country back, one heart, one mile, one switch, one choice, one barrel, one breath, one kind word, one spoonful and one hand at a time...whatever is needed. The party that we could never afford is over, it is time for our leaders to be "real" and it is time for the people of the "heart" to hold them accountable when they are not. No more airy promises to huge crowds and then back room favors to those who can help them figure out how to squander the national treasure. Our true national treasure, the heart is being driven over, brushed to the side, dumped into, polluted, squandered, stollen from, left so often without guidance, being denied education, being left in harms way.

Hi Sheryl,

My name is Sandra. Here's an issue that gets to me. I would write about the death penalty, and how wrong it is. Although the death penalty is illegal where I'm from, when I hear that it happens in other parts of the continent, it makes me angry. You never know for sure if the person is guilty, do you? When I was in school, I went to listen to a man speak about his stint on death row. He was locked up for over 18 years for a murder that in the end, he hadn't even committed!!! This man lost 18 years of his life waiting to have a needle stuck in his arm. I find that unexcusable. To add insult to injury, when he as released from the Florida death row penitentiary, they gave him back his belongings (what he had with him when he was locked up - watch, shoelaces, etc) and one hundred dollars for the inconvenience.

So if I was writing a song, I would write about death row.

On a side note, Sheryl, you have been one of my absolute favorite artists since 1993. I love what you do. Please don't leave out Montreal next time you go on tour!

And happy birthday! (to you and me on the same day!)

Sandra

Humm... Everyone seems to be focusing on pressing social problems, and I suppose in that regard the one that is closest to me just now is that of AIDS orphans in Africa.

The other thing I would really like to hear a song about is the experience of severe depression...

We have witnessed many atrocities in our country over the past 8 years, but the most horrifying and embarrassing is by far, the treatment and care of our returning wounded veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. This has led to the highest military divorces, suicides, and mental illnesses in US history. I am ashamed for the rest of the world to know this, and I feel a strong song regarding "sharing their blood" would be more than appropriate.

Hi Sheryl,

Day after day we hear how we have done significant damage to Planet Earth. This includes water pollution, greenhouse gases and global warming, extinction of species, razing of the rain forests, the generation of trash and garbage that we "neatly" bury in landfills.

Yet have we learned anything from all this. Apparently not when you see how we are treating space debris and inoperative satellites and space junk. All we do is allow this junk to continue to float around the planet. No one is held responsible to clean up after themselves. The obvious risk is that some of the obsolete equipment crashes back to earth and hurts someone.

Even our own astronauts release garbage from the ISS. Ironically, they themselves are at risk of being hit by the very junk they are dumping in space.

You might have guessed that the topic that I would like to see some focus on is the issue of space junk. With your song writing skills and great delivery, you are just the ticket!

Here's some catch phrases to consider:
Spaced out in space (or outer space)
Space junk junkies
The elephant in the sky
Don't look up, it's coming down
Our biggest worries from outer space aren't UFO's

Sheryl, I've been a fan since Tuesday Night Music Club. Your concert in Tampa was great last year (quite the majorette!). Please come back to Central Florida on the next tour. Would love to meet you backstage and have you sign my copy of Detours that I am hoping to win.

Dan

What would I write a song about?

All of societal ills are connected to poverty and poverty is related to the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve creates deficit, no matter what the economists (spin doctors) tell us. You cannot reduce the deficit by redirecting money from other projects. Deficit is defined as the DIFFERENCE between money owed and income. If the Fed injects $1 trillion dollars but demands $1.3 trillion back (the loan PLUS INTEREST), there is a $0.3 trillion deficit. No other money was created to pay this deficit. It is a trap and this trap has been used to control governments and peoples for the last century.

Removing income tax and replacing it with flat tax maintains the Federal Reserve and it's deficit trap. Creating universal healthcare maintains this poverty making trap. Fixing the border, fixing the economy, pulling out of Iraq, it's all the same crap because it doesn't get rid of the root cancer. You can't treat symptoms only, and expect good health.

Ron Paul is the only candidate who recognizes that the war on terror is predicated on the 9-11 attacks, which were inside operations (black ops). This was designed to bring the American people against the evil that is Islam. Why? Because Islam forbids the charging of interest - THE VERY SAME METHOD OF ENSLAVEMENT THAT THE FEDERAL RESERVE USES TO CONTROL.

Even Willy Nelson realizes that 9-11 was an inside job.

Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate that says he will do away with the Federal Reserve. The last president that did this was JFK - See Executive Order # 11110 - look it up! I'll wait! Guess why he died?

The same dynasty who set up the Federal Reserve and the little apartheid state in the middle east is the Rothschild family. If you want to know which candidate is truly for the people of the Republic of the united states just ask them if they are willing to go to war for Israel. This will tell you where their allegiance lies.

Ron Paul is the only candidate who will remove the cancer. Kind of fitting that he's a M.D.!

The only other thing that is worth making a song out of is you and I making love. We would become immersed in the stream of infinite love which may cause a chain reaction that heals the whole planet in a single moment. :-)

I must first say, it is always wonderful to see your face and hear your voice, thank you for the music.

that said,

I think I would write about our veterans. I think the people need to know more of what they have done for this country. I think the government needs to do more for our vets. I would like people to understand what vets go through, state side and over seas, for the freedoms this country has today.
If you are reading this today, thank a vet.

Dear Sheryl,

What a terrific idea! I voted for the first time today, and I've been thinking....

....an episode of American Dreams: Bandstand and The Kennedy's, Neighborhood BBQ's and apple pie....Freedom of Speech and getting what you're fighting for....Thats what we'd like America to still be.

What a great era in history that we've all studied in class........Well, first time voters haven't experienced times like those....We've seen war, deceit and lies and we believed them all because thats what our parents and teachers told us to believe.

We've seen The Dixie Chicks, Rosie O' Donnell, You and many others stand up for what they believe in.... only to get shot down for trying to stand up for it....It's teaching us to be afraid and submissive, to go with the flow....BUT WE WANT CHANGE. WE WILL CHANGE IT. WE HAVE TO CHANGE IT. WE HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE

-a song of sweet memories that we only know of in stories, our reality and a hope for our future.

.....thats what I'd like to write about.

Thank you, Sheryl,

ange.

Hi Sheryl,
I would write a song with a story platform - aka American Pie / Cats In The Cradle - about this girl i met called "Sue Tent" - ( "Sunitinib" a female breast cancer chemo drug i am on as a male trialist to help fight my Renal cancer) and how she, 'Sue (Tent)', has changed my life for for what you believe is for the better... to give me mental and emotional strengths, hopes and dreams to believe i will live on to see the sun set , play with my dogs...
I would make it a story that captures the listeners attention and emotional connection as cancer seems to be 'everywhere' these days and everyone knows someone who has passed or is fighting this wicked disease...
i wouldn't mention the word 'cancer' but the story would be written to explain about the girl "Sue (Tent) has come into many of our lives and is keeping us alive and with hopes...
I would do it as an acoustic song and add a twang in there from your "Everyday is a Winding Road..."
peace
hayward von max
anna maria island, florida

cruising off in a convertible, dust stirring, hair flying... into the sunset so the it is up to the listener to wonder if you i passed on or literally drove off into the sunset to smiledeep...

There are two issues that are close to my heart:

1) on behalf of myself (17 year survivor), Sheryl and all the people (men included) who have lost a breast to cancer, I want the world to know that life doesn't end with a diagnosis.

2) it makes my heart sick that the economies of many Latin American countries are so bad that mothers and fathers leave their children with extended familly and sneak into the US in order to work, enabling them to keep their children from starving. The put themselves at risk, ruin their family relations and are subject to prosecution by the US. The children feel abandoned and then often make the trip to the US themselves, traveling atop rail cars, being molested by bandits and police alike, and often losing life or limb to the railroad trains themselves. If the children do manage to make it across the border, they often have lost their parent(s)' contact information and cannot find them. If the children (most are in the 10-15 year age range) do manage to find their family in the US, relations are often strained. The boys often turn to gangs as a surrogate family and the girls get pregnant to have a baby love them.

As the parent of three, one adopted at age five, I'd write about how the No Child Left Behind act simply...leaves children behind. Social promotion in schools is not the same as education. I know. I see children graduating from high school who can't read. If we don't have citizens with basic education and perhaps even some financial or basic literacy (able to get by, shop, read package labels, follow instructions on them) then how can we have a population prepared to compete in the world, let alone vote? My kid keeps advancing in school and I have to pay a tutor to make sure he is really learning what he should be learning while he is AT school. Math. Reading. History. Basic Economics. Literature. Plus, art and music aren't even offered in many schools anymore, not considered "basics". Huh?!

First of all, I would LOOOOOVE to see a song about your own name, and how your parents named you Sheryl and NOT Cheryl, Crow and NOT Crowe. I'd love it, 'cause that doesn't hurt my soul, but my eyes, darn it!

Now, seriously, I would write a song about growing up on a society that calls itself openminded, and stabs you with racism, sexism, xenophobia and hate disguised by stereotypes on TV.

When you grow up in this kind of world, you become a two-sided coin: the face heading one way; and what counts, the value, on the other side, the part that nobody can see.
I can tell you for sure my life is that coin, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one hating stereotypes on TV that low down the real meaning of being homosexual, black, woman, or whatever.

Notice that this wouldn't be a something like C. Aguilera's "Beautiful", of M. Gray's "Sexual Revolution", but about our own hypocresy about equality, love and understanding.
Many people say "twenty years ago you didn't see any gay person on TV", or "XX years ago color people didn't appear on television, we're progressing". Well, this song would be about that, about how now we see this supposed equality, but it's just a clown, a showman, taken to the extreme where you can list stereotypes to use to catalogue society and say "I'm not this".

P.S.: Oh, please, don't misunderstand me. When I say "woman" among the other groups I was thinking as a social group just like any other, bound to the rules of a world where the blonde is stupid, the only thing in women's head is shopping, and the only thing that you are good for is cooking :S

I'm not that chauvinist :D

I feel we are living in a nation full of people who have expectations that are too high. They expect to: get their way, become famous, be on TV, and have all that they want. People often fail to work hard first and to realize that you do not always get everything you want. We run up ridiculous credit debt, foreclose on our homes, pout when judges don't select us on 'reality' shows, and then we complain that life is not fair. Well, guess what... life is not fair. Just because we want something, we don't necessarily need or deserve it. We overuse words like 'need' and 'have to' without ever realizing how far from the truth those terms are. There is nothing wrong with wanting something or working hard for something, but I have a real issue with people who expect the world to cater to them.
Rock on, Sheryl!

Dear Sheryl, you might wish to write a song about the consumption society which is going round the earth, with millions and millions people wanting to live the material life, just as their examples from the media do. So all they wanna do is have some fun, and they are indeed not the only ones! But instead of a preaching song, asking young people to stop consuming and to stop destroying the earth, and saying 'we are all responsible' and those kind of things, you could point out that it is business and governments who apparently cannot achieve that the goods and services are produced with fewer resources and causing less pollution. So why blame it all on the (young) consumer? I believe it is possible to give everyone in the world a decent, even happy and cool life, if industry/goverments would decrease their resource consumption and pollution with a factor ten. For that we need inspirational leaders. Consumers are no sinners. It is not at all a problem if they wanna have some fun, it is the outdated society and oldfashioned legislation which creates the problem.

A song about social phobia would touch my heart. I lived with it for a while before I became schizophrenic from my drug use. I'm a little detached now from who I was before all this, and I think a song about social phobia or something that speaks to people who suffer from it is a good thing. It's just the most common thing to live with.

I would write about personal responsibility and the role each of us has to play in making a difference.

Indifference keeps us from being the best that we can be. It keeps us from pulling ourselves and others out of poverty, coming up with innovative ideas to make us competitive in the world, and taking action to hold our leaders accountable.

It is not naive to believe we can change the world -- for the better.

I believe what we focus on grows, so I would not write a song about what's wrong but something along the lines of Imagine.... Love is absolutely the most important thing in the universe and that Love will save the planet. So I would write a song about people all over the world forgetting their nationality, forgetting their ethnicity, religion, prejudices etc and appreciating the miracle, the wonder and beauty and uniqueness of each person they see and projecting love towards that person. When Love grows this way, the "Mess" and everything else that is wrong will simply fade away. We'll forget all about it.

I would write a song about elementary education. I used to have more time (make more time) to go to a local elementary school and read to the kids in a second grade class. Many of the kids were on a free lunch program. I don't have kids of my own so this was always a touching event. I would sit on the floor and the kids would converge on me. They could stand and look me right in the eye from their level. I could look into their souls. Some would just climb on me or hope that I would put my arm around them. While they are interested in having someone read to them, they want some attention. They want to be recognized and be acknowledged. They are the future and how do they get a chance? They can't help the situation that they are in. Many don't have parents that can help them with homework. One of the teachers told me that the issue of the evening was not whether the home work gets done but where will they sleep. Many of the students may not be at the same school the next semester or maybe even the next month. Math is not my forte but when I worked with some of the kids on problems I got a blank stare from one little boy. He just did not get it. He looked me in the eye with a helpless look. I need to go back to see if I can help in some way. I try to do what I can to support that school any time they ask. The times that I have been there have nearly brought me to tears. It is emotional for me. The teachers do the best that they can. The teachers are dedicated and are not the ones that receive the awards and recognition because the achievement test results are harder to achieve.
How do we reach the children? Who will look after them? How do we keep them from falling through the cracks? Where will they go and what will they do when they grow up? Maybe it is not the government that can help them. We as community volunteers can make a difference with strength in numbers. Schools are communities and the children spend so much time in their lives there. The responsibilities have become great with some schools having breakfast programs and after school programs for the kids where parents work and are not home. Someone has to be their champion.

I love to flyfish and I love the beauty and tranquility of being on the water and the moments of peace one can find. I get frustrated to see trash in our rivers and on the banks. why don't people understand? why don't they clean up after themselves? We only have one earth, one time to shine. If everyone could just take a moment and pick up one piece of garbage everyday it will make a differnce. Keep our waters clean clear and free and we will reap the rewards.

In this day and age everyone needs love, beauty, peace, tranquility and those moments that allow our souls breathe free.

Sheryl, I'd love to hear a song from you about allowing a child to grow into the person he or she is. Its so logical but, for some reason, so hard to do from the moment they come into our lives. The best intentions to guide and support can become laced with pressure and disappointment in a competitive world. We need to ease up, love each other and see them as their own individuals. Mistakes and failures are all part of it. **on a happier note, thanks for putting out the new Detours CD!**

Sheryl, I am fond of your music and the lyrics you bring to life. I admire you as a strong woman who practices true equality feminism and not gender feminism. I am just one man who still believes there is time to turn this world around. Music is the common ground that we can join together over. Songs and lyrics have kept me alive and rocking on over the years and tears. I will buy your album today and listen. I leave you with a write inspired by one of my favorites who now asks, "Is anyone alive out there."
A Search for Healing in So Much Sorrow

The light both rises and falls
On hopes horizon
Much sorrow and too little truth
Need and so much greed
Sometimes I morn for these sad days
These troubled times and the human race
My Big Dawg 'Bruce Springsteen' playing on the radio
Singing about 'Devils and Dust'
I write of broken hearted rust
In a search for healing
Find revival in songwriters' words
'Born to Run' from 'Devils and Dust'
Find spark from song
Common ground of the common man
With a 'Boss' who lives truth from 'E Street'
To Main Street
In stories of real people
Heart of a country
So far removed from mindless spin of zombies
The right that is wrong
Sometimes you must morn
For the people of this world
All alone together
'Devils and Dust' filling our souls
Tough to breath to know your roles
Dream our dreams
Fulfill our goals
Come together
Communicate and connect
A day at a time one step forward
Two back
Dreams held and drifting
Resist believe and persist

Clouds and blue sky
Shadows and light
Souls in danger spiritual cost
Lives at risk spirit lost
Strive to maintain faith
Learn to love

We touch each day
Shadow of our dreams
Those we love and whose love has touched us
Sadness of our own and those we wish to reach
We give our all each day
Alive but alone
To go down in dreams each night
Awake looking for the morning light
Cherished grace of charity and compassion

Quiet in our desperation
Energy spent with little residual
Sore wounded scorched spirit
Soul searching
Heavy load train of thought
Going too fast to just stay on track
Move up the next hill
Just to see hopes horizon
Hold on

How much sorrow can we bear?
Before doing determined best
Yielding we just put it down
Where the light both rises and falls

"God bless us and save us"
Grandfather said through Two World Wars
And through a grandson
"Great Spirit of all bless us and save us"
So much sorrow

Help us to resist, believe and persist
Strive to maintain faith and search for healing
Learn to love as we live
Cherish grace of compassion and charity
Come together
Communicate and connect
Find the courage to believe in yourself and in others
On common ground
Where irreconcilable differences
Diminish disperse and disappear
On hopes horizon
The place where the light both rises and falls

{Attribute: spark to years of listening to the music of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band and the rest to the genes inherited from the ancestors}

I would write about how human lives get trapped by other people's desire for wealth, what a waste it is, how it can eat away at our society like a cancer, how it kills, tears apart, breaks us down to sand, tests our faith. My son died from a methadone pill that I directly attribute to the Pharmaceutical's control and greed. They should never have been allowed to use this drug for pain prescriptions, but I'm sure there was profit in the decision.

Adoption of foreign-born children. The stories of these kids' lives, why there is a massive need for them to be adopted, their countries' situations: poverty, malnutrition, lack of potable water, war, rebels, kids being given guns to fight with rebels, hate. Two of our kids are from Haiti - a country with many needs.

I didn't read all the comments so ignore this if its been said,

The song Anne Murray wrote called "A little good news" that never really got much play is a theme we could use .

But Please if you have not heard it, listen to the original version, not the one she updated a couple years back, that one is really poor on vocals and its a duet.

I'd give a voice to those that can't speak... those that can only bark or meow... all the many homeless and/or abused animals that can't sing for themselves. I wish there was a way to find a loving home for every lonely, unwanted animal in the world. But I believe we must first start with educating people on the horrible number of animals at shelters that get put down every year because there's no one to take them into their homes and into their hearts.

Two things come to mind, both haunting me this election season.

The first is how nice it would be if people could *talk* to each other, with depth and civility and respect. Candidates, voters. . . we really need to be able to talk to each other to find our way forward together.

The second is related, I suppose. I'd love to see--or at least hear songs about!--a great awakening, a rekindling of the values I think of as American: caring for people who need care; less attention to acquiring, more to sharing; more recognition that we're part of the world and part of the ages. I'd like to feel proud of us as Americans. We can do better. . . if we only choose to.

If Sheryl wants to write a new song, how about a song about how arrogant celebrities think they have the right to shove their politics down the throats of Americans, most of whom probably have more education and common sense than anything that crawls out of Hollywood. I'd love to hear a song that addresses the phenomenon of Hollywood twits who think that every time they burp they've produced gems of wisdom.

As I sit here with my wife ill , it comes to mind, that families and communication are the main answers to most of the problems we face as a society.

"Listen Family while I tell you a story..." is a title that come to mind for me for you to use. I created it but I give it freely if you choose to use it.

Be well, and let your loved ones know you love them... Keith Ledgers untimely death reminds us of this...

I would like to hear a song about how there really isn't freedom of speech in the US. Big Pharma and the western medical world has control over what natural healers can say and claim and use in advertising and promotion of their products. They are trying to gain control over supplements and say you can't label food as Genetically Modified. You can't label food as being sourced from clones. All over the world Big PHarma is trying to gather and control every last dollar that is available, meanwhile, putting smaller businesses out of business and muzzling them. Ah, Better Living by Chemicals, perhaps that is the title of the song....

I would write a song about the insidious war on the imagination and what it is robbing the future of...what it has already robbed us of...the potentials we don;t consider or even percieve becouse of the goulag fences around this soulful terrain....the promise of cultivating it and what that would afford us, collectively...as a world. It begins so early (my son is in kindergarten...I won;t even get into what he is going through becouse he doesn;t fit "the mold" that all five year olds should fit...he is reading and cognating at a fifth grade level, according to their own testing...his math skills are at 3rd grade level...he understands music organically and paints, but not precisely what his teacher wants him to paint...you should see the amazing drawing he came home with yesterday! I have my work cut out for me protecting his Spirit so he doesn;t fall prey to the "goosestep syndrome"....helping him be self-referred about his own work. )
Anyway, there is this really awesome quote by a woman whose name I can;t recall off the top of my head and it essentially says that the most egregious war is the war on the imagination and that all other wars are subsumed by it. "I - MAGI - NATION"...the realm of infinite possibilities. This is what I would write and sing about...Reclaiming this could possibly be the Mother of all Healings. May peace prevail in our Hearts and our world.

Hi Sheryl!

I actually already have written a song that I hope will help raise awareness for a rare muscular medical condition I was born with called Prune Belly Syndrome.

50% of anyone born with this condition will not survive their 2nd birthday if they even get far. I am 40 years old & am one of the lucky 50% that did survive it.

Most people with this condition feel as though they are alone, as no one, not even some medical professionals, know what this is or how to treat it & no research is being done to look into it.

My song is called "Not The Only One" & was performed by myself & my music partner Ramona Spooney, along with help from our friend Jen Chapin, daughter of singer Harry Chapin.

Please visit http://www.prunebelly.org & http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/pbsn for information.

Thanks very much for your time & consideration!
Sincerely-
Frank Walker

what a coincidence! I wrote a song a few months that goes like this. There's a Songstress out on the road on tour,
Claims for global warming, She's got a cure.
Toilet paper, just use one square,
to clean up your derriere.

Been there, done that,
Had to wash thrice my hands,
Not to mention my underpants.

Chorus
I'm sure she's charming,
But she don't use enough Charmin.
One thing I know,
I ain't shaking hands with Sheryl Crow

Sheryl

The Arms Trade— is a major cause of suffering!

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children… This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."
Former U.S. President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, in a speech on April 16, 1953

The arms trade is a major cause of human rights abuses. Some governments spend more on military expenditure than on social development, communications infrastructure and health combined. While every nation has the right and the need to ensure its security, in these changing times, arms requirements and procurements may need to change too; and I would right a song about this cause.

There are so many songs about the hardship of people, how the country is,the war...all about human heartache and triumph. Don't get me wrong, it's important and touching, but what about our best friends? Our pets...specifically dogs and cats. We adopted our dog from a shelter when he was a puppy. He means the world to us and I can't imagine life without him. We even tried to adopt another dog about a year ago, but she was too aggressive and we had to take her back. Even after only one day it broke my heart to take her back. I couldn't help but cry when they took her back to her cage and she looked back at me.
It breaks my heart to know there are so many other cats and dogs without a home in shelters. They are so wonderful and loyal when you adopt them. They know you saved them from a sad place and gave them a life full of love. And they repay that love everyday.
I'd love to write a song to express my sadness for all the animals in shelters without a home, and the thanks to my dog for all the love and companionship he gives me. Not only would I just write this song for others to hear, but somehow I would make it beneficial to the animal shelters. Conditions at most shelters are so bad, harsh, and overflowing. A little money for each shelter would go a long way to improve the conditions and happiness for the animals that have to live there...maybe all their lives.

i was up all night thinkin' as it was getting close to dawn,
it ain't like i was drinkin, and i ain't done nothing wrong,
but i was worried about the world we'd leave behind,
i was worried about the days ahead,
i was worried about the world our kids would find,
and i was tired of counting the dead.

i just wanted peace to rain down,
on us all just like from heaven,
peace to rain down,
like when i throw that lucky seven
onto that Vegas felt,
and i could shuffle what i'd been dealt,
at the altar of love i've knelt,
and i have prayed, prayed prayed.

ive spent half my life gambling so i hope you can understand,
i think that we're all losing, bluffing on an empty hand -
you gotta hold'em or fold'em and make it right,
get from the dark into the light,
gotta make the world a better place,
so everyone can have a taste.

and then peace will rain down,
on us all just like from heaven.....

now i've had my heart broken, i didn't think i that i could feel,
but love came my way again, and i knew that i was healed.
so you gotta give thanks for another chance,
thanks to the stars above,
for every day you get the time to dance,
and every time you get to love.....

and then peace will rain down,
on us all just like from heaven...

peace rain down,
like when i throw that cosmic seven,
onto that karmic felt,
and i could shuffle what i been dealt,
at the altar of love i've knelt,
and i have prayed prayed prayed.

Today, over 26,500 children died around the world
That is equivalent to:

1 child dying every 3 seconds
18 children dying every minute

The silent killer is poverty

In spite of the scale of this daily/ongoing catastrophe, it rarely manages to achieve, much less sustain, prime-time, headline coverage so writing a song about world poverty might help change these statistics.

At the turn of this century a homeless man was allowed to win the lottery.
It was hoped he would change the world for the better, forever.

all we really have
are the tools of creation,
first inhalation,
then exhalation.
just breathe the air,
and you'll know that you're there.

i had a guru,
he gave me a mantra,
but i could never recall it,
he'd catch me humming Sinatra.
one day he threw up his hands,
and said, "I just can't teach you!"
but if you heed these words,
perhaps they will reach you:

all we really have,
are the tools of creation:
first inhalation,
then exhalation.
just breathe the Air,
and you'll know that you're there.

i live this life,
i don't know much.
just love and be loved,
touch and be touched,
do the best in the world,
right from the start,
spread the love that you have
from your beating heart.

'cause all we really have,
are the tools of creation.
first inhalation,
then exhalation.
just breathe the air,
and you'll know that you're there!

It's simple: the message is treat one another with kindness....parents saying something serious to a child in kindness...no matter if they're mad, keeping that kind voice afloat above it all, because a child can disappear in seconds, and we can lose them in other ways as well, if we lose their trust....kindness between people is the way we can earn trust, it's the way to love, to live, to negotiate for problem solving, to avoid war...kindness...we're all in this life together...like it or not, we're stuck her on earth...kids are here with us, and they did not ask to be born...if we're kind to them, we make it worth their while, worth their time, their energy, their hard work in school, their love for us and their other family members and friends. LIfe is hard enough--if we're unkind all the time, or often, to children especially, we're making it a sad place for them, a hopeless place, possibly a living hell...like the stone that plops onto the surface of a pond, each act of kindness reaches, stretches out across the pond, the lake, the river, the ocean, and each time it does, the world changes a little...changes for the better, for hope, for love. Kindess.....that's such a little word.....but it can change the whole world for good.

I am the mother of 4 children, my third child Eden was diagnosed at the age of 2 years old with Cystic Fibrosis and Asthma. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disease which is terminal. It affects the digestive and respiratory systems among many other functions. My daughter is 6 yrs. now and is on 13 different medications and 3 different medical machines, one for chest compressions, a nebulizer for breathing treatments and since she has a feeding tube, a Kangaroo pump to pump her formula into her belly at night.

Asthma in my family deadly. I have a 30 yr. old cousin who was not supposed to make it past 15. He has so far but is constantly in and out of intensive care. The similarities between My daughter Eden and my cousin Jonathan is that Eden is 6 and 39 lbs, Jonathan is 30 and 280 lbs and they are both on the exact same meds (for controlling Asthma) and are taking the exact same dosage.

CF patients have a lifespan of 25-35 years. So far there is no cure for CF. This is my cause, my issue, my determination. We have to find a cure for CF and increase awareness of this deadly disease. Please... help me. What will I do without my baby?

I would combine a poem/song I wrote about my brother's suicide in 1992 and a poem I wrote for "The Mother's of Angels Society" of Bridgewater, Fall River and Amherst, NS on the effects of death of a child on family, most specifically on a mom. I would combine the two through music and call it "Without Their Angels." I would help use revenue earned from such works to help keep The Mother's of Angels Society support group going not only in our province but perhaps help others start groups like this in the areas they live. It's very close to my heart because without a support group such as the one in the my local area which I helped start recently I watched what the lack of support after losing your child has done to my own mom.

The average age of homeless children in the United States is nine years old. Youth in our country in this situation are without resources, help, or hope. Sheryl, I'd love to see you address this issue in song.

I would like to see you write a song on Sustainable Development

To help focus the world's attention and direct action toward meeting difficult challenges, including improving people's lives and conserving our natural resources in a world that is growing in population, with ever-increasing demands for food, water, shelter, sanitation, energy, health services and economic security.

To avoid economic collapse at the global level, major reforms of government policy to steer investment away from destructive activities such as the extraction of fossil fuels and toward a new generation of environmentally sustainable industries needs to happen and a song from you would focus attention to this matter..

I think perhaps a song about taking someone's love for granted and then realizing how special love was only after it was too late to ever get it back. When you are young and full of yourself it is too easy to take love for granted (but as you get older, you see just how precious it can be).

For me, such a song sung from a third person perspective would look like this:

"Shades of Blue Fading to Grey"

When you have eyes only for yourself,
another's pain you may not see.
And it gets too late to ease the hurt
when the knife had cut too deep.

Then one day you cut far enough
that she cuts and runs away
And now you find that you're living
in shades of blue fading to grey.

(chorus)
Shades of blue fading to grey
color the night and color the day.
Shades of grey fading to black
and the blues keep coming on back.

You took too much for granted
and had too much your way.
You saw the tears in her eyes,
but you never saw the pain.

True love can't be a one way street
-if you travel too far that way,
someday you'll find the road has turned
to shades of blue fading to grey.

(repeat chorus)

Some walls you build will never fall,
some hurts will never heal.
The love that someone may have felt,
they may no longer feel.

Once you've caused a love to change,
it can never be quite the same -
you could end up with a different love
or shades of blue fading to grey.

(repeat chorus)

Optional 4th verse:

So now that you've come down to earth
and found you're not the sun,
have you also found that a world for two
can't turn around just one?

As the shock of loss weighs on you
and you see your mistakes,
do you see getting your old love back
or shades of blue fading to grey?

(repeat chorus)

Let me try this again. It seems that anytime someone mentions issues it comes with a negative connotation. How about writing a song about persons who do the right thing even when they have the right to do otherwise. What about the persons that stay strong, endure, don't give up on those that are important to them, stick it out even when the going gets rough. We are people of integrity, strength, resolve, determination and never say quit. Let's hear something that will inspire us to keep it up.

Since I'm trying to raise money to help fund shelters for battered women, that's the subject I'd have to say is near and dear to my heart. It may not be a political issue and you probably don't think in this day and age that it's anything to worry about. That's because it doesn't get the attention of more prominent issues. It's kept quiet. Sometimes for the comfort of the batterer and sometimes for the protection of the battered. The statistics are overwhelming to me. Here are just a few.
*Every 9 seconds a woman is battered in the United States.
*Twenty-six percent of pregnant teens reported being physically abused by their boyfriends - about half of them said the battering began or intensified after he learned of her pregnancy.
*One in three teenagers report knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, kicked, slapped, choked or physically hurt by their partner.
*In the United States, researchers estimate that 40 percent to 70 percent of female murder victims were killed by their husbands or boyfriends, frequently in the context of an ongoing abusive relationship.

And one more, the one I think is the worst...
*The leading cause of death in pregnant women is murder. Not premature labor, not preeclampsia, murder!

My husband is a very large, very strong man. He is the manliest man I've ever known. And never in a million years would he ever think about hurting me. That's what we've got to teach our children. That's what I'd love to hear broadcast by your lovely voice.

I would write a song about the citizens of the United States of America. It is a song about the common people, leading decent lives, raising families and through words and actions, teaching children what is important.

This country isn't a political party, a conflict, a war, a natural disaster, or the price of gasoline and food. This country is people uniting to resolve problems and make this neighborhood, town, state, country and world a better place for all.

When we must sacrifice for the good of others, we do so in the spirit of all people who came before us and laid down their resources and--when necessary--their very lives to help their brothers and sisters. This country is every single human being living in this country, believing in the ideals of citizenship and community while going about daily lives.

Most of us aren't glamorous or rich, rather common and strong in our beliefs in hard work and the chance to make a better life for our children.

We are America.

I would think a song helping dealing with what is going on, we need green power, we
need to walk away from driving big SUV's and start looking for ways to work with
Mother Earth not against her. There needs to be a world for our children's children not
to have to deal with smoky skies and man made mess.
There needs to be young blood in the government, those who are still able to understand and give back to the people, with love and understanding that we share
this world with every race, color and creed. There needs to be even more color
blindness and helping those who can't help themselves.
Not by handouts, but by finding jobs and not having all the jobs going overseas any longer!
Children need to be given hope again, teachers need more money and less time
dealing with having to thought of as nothing but babysitters.
But there needs to be songs of hope, love, caring for one another.. We are all in this
together no matter where we are from, rich or poor and we need to stand as one.
Old blood and money needs to get out of government for now, and we need to show we have hope that this is going to be a better tomorrow.
My favorite saying of all time is:
Change your mind ~ You change your world.
That is something we all need to be doing, is finding ways to better our own personal
world by helping others better theirs. A little hard work never hurt anyone.

Wow, a lot of people have added their two cents on political and social issues. Everyone has a beef about something. There are lots of problems in the world I can get passionate about, a lot I could argue about until I'm blue in the face, and a lot I would fight for....but doesn't all of that breed images of violence? Protest? Conflict?

What about love? What about caring? How many of us notice the stray dog walking down the sidewalk? The child getting off the bus in torn jeans, a hand-me-down shirt and shoes with holes in the sole?

We are so wrapped up in our own opinions and lives that we've lost the lesson of the good Samaritan. It's so easy to hate or be intolerant of those different from us.

I guess my passion is getting back to how we all got here in the beginning....Love

It was love that made us, clothed us, fed us, taught us how to love and brought us up to pass it on.....

(and no, I'm not a hippy....just wishing for something positive instead of the constant bombardment of negativety I hear everyday on the radio and tv)

Sheryl, I think that this nation is in serious trouble. I don't believe we are free any longer. The people that abide by the rules/laws are not free, we are financially hammered, and the people that don't abide by the laws have no consequences. We cannot trust our government to do the right thing by us, and we have no voice, or it feels that way. When you are poor, you are controlled by everything around you, especially the government. And with the way things are: the overtaxing, the "rules" and fees attached to everything, it's really hard to get ahead. There is so much homelessness and it's not just people with disabilities now, some had that big house and family and good job. If anything happens, like health issues for instance, you lose everything because you couldn't build up enough to back you up if there was a problem. The government is $$$money driven and unfortunatly we the people are the road they tread on. What happen to "Don't tread on Me?" As you can probably tell, I'm not hardcore political, although I do keep informed and I do vote. I'm just not sure that how I vote makes any real difference or even if the next president will be the one we all voted for.... I feel it's that corrupt. Sheryl, I hope you find what you are looking for in all the responses that you get. AnikaTyanne
