Discussion Topic #24: Premonitions--Have you ever had one? Where do they come from?

Some people are very sensitive to external and internal clues - this I don't think is really paranormal but normal. A person can be really in tune with what other people feel and can get vibes as to their inner state.

A person can also pick up on various clues in the external world, such as now - the traffic going to and from the store was wild - this was because of the Superbowl.

A person can really read another's soul - if that person is really depressed, a person can pick up on that. But not everyone is really gifted this way. Some more than others. Probably most of us can be, but we let 'noise' interfere with our gifts.

Sometimes I do. Had one about getting in a fight in gym class, it happen just like I saw it right down to getting swatted with the BOE on my bottom side.

I believe in premonition, precognitive experience, the ether that unite's mind body and soul. I have experienced premonition, usually when it happened, I was unable to alter or change anything that might have happened because it was always a minute or seconds before the experience; and I always felt somewhat frozen and unable to act or rather react. The late great carl sagen, talked and lectured about the evolution of man kind, thought, experience and how he was under the impression that at one point the worlds cognition would become a matrix of thought, Idea, consciousness. Furthermore, Nietsche was of the opinion that humanity, thought, cognition was destined to evolve exponentially, and with such vastness that we as, a society and culture would evolve into superman. I'm still not convinced that either theory, Idea, thesis, or expounded thought, by Nietsche or Sagen correct or incorrect, My only thought is that two great minds predicted the evolution of thought, and, that evolution would surely encompass premonition, precognitive ability's. I believe that we are able to access a vast reserve of ability, is it God enabling us to respond, It is divine intervention. Some theologians would say it is god's affect on the human spirit, a result of omnipotent will and desire; others that it is cause and effect and an inate ability to perceive moments, years, months, or decades before action.

I have had pemonitions all my life. I do not like to get them , as they are always usually about something bad that is going to happen, sometimes to family members and sometime to people I do not know, I have a piece I wrote on here when I first came to Gather that tells rather extensively of these experiences. I also come from a family that has been able to do this over many decades, and my daughter told me of her own upcoming accident, that was passed to her by my mother who died 12 years before her birth, I don't know how to explain this, and try not to think about it, but when an apprehensive feeling comes to me, I pay attention to it.

I've heard of it, but never experienced it. I would like to read Elsie's artical also.

I think it is an ability we all have to some degree, ranging from thinking of someone right before we get a phone call from them, to detailed visions, such as Nostradamus and others have had. I get dream messages and visions occasionally.

I have experienced this all of my life. I have dreams that come true as well as visions while I am awake since I was a young girl. I have learned to trust my intuition and feelings.

I have not personally been subject to premonitions or anything of the sort, but I know two people who have that I have seen evidence of with my own eyes.

My sister twice had premonitions in her teenage years. One Saturday she awoke from a nights sleep and came out of her room all agitated, convinced that our neighbours upstairs had rushed their son, whom we were all very deeply attached to, to the hospital and that he was not breathing. Naturally, we contacted our upstairs neighbour to see if everything was all right, and it was. They said their son was fine. My sister swore that she had seen them carrying him into their car and speeding off. However, the very next Saturday exactly that did happen and he had to have a tracheotomy to allow him to breath.

A couple of years later our family had driven from our home in Montreal, Quebec to visit some cousins in Burlington, Ontario, about a seven hour drive. On the return trip after a couple of days visit, two of my older brothers were in the elder one's car driving on ahead while the rest of the family were in my Dad's car following behind. They had left a little earlier than we did and the plan was that we would meet at a roadside restaurant/gas station near Kingston, Ontario which was just past the halfway point. Shortly before reaching Kingston my sister awoke from a nap, agitated, insisting that the boys had been in an accident. We all assured her that she had been dreaming, that she had no way of knowing this, and that they were fine. As we were turning into the pre-arranged meeting place we saw that there had been an accident along the highway, just past the on ramp. Sure enough, it was them. They were unhurt but the car was totalled. We all had to cram into Dad's car for the last three hours of the drive, and it was packed (Eight people in an Impala).

My late Aunt Maggie had a reputation of making very accurate predictions and prognostications. She would "read your cards", not Tarot, just a regular deck of cards. I was the last person she ever read for, as she had stopped reading as all she ever saw was tragedy. I kind of insisted and she gave in and read my cards. I turned over a Jack of Spades and she told me to take another card instead. Her daughter, my cousin, said: "No, Mom, you have to tell him what that one means." She wouldn't and stopped reading then and there. Two weeks later I had a motorcycle accident and could not walk for several days due to my injuries.

Where does such foreknowledge come from?

I really have no deep insight into this. It is an enduring mystery to me. Either the foreknowledge of events exists in the universe, and there are ways of or people who can tap into that (meaning that everything must be predestined), or time is not absolute and there are ways of seeing into the future. What are the mechanics of either possibility?

I, for one, do not know.

I probably have had a few "insights" at least, that "could" be called premonitions of a sort I suppose ... but I dwell not on them, so remember little about them. As far as I remember they were all more of a "long term" kind of thing, such as for the future of humanity in general. Nothing that would have any meaning for most I am sure. (because they have yet to play out completely ... but I do see evidence of sorts).

I have a close friend from way back, who said he used to have very strong premonitions, but for some reason they very much frightened him, so he shut them out of his life at at early age ... personally I believe that he should have cultivated them as a gift.

As for space/time concepts, that is but something we have co-created to explain and share our also co-created reality with each other. What we think it is all about and what it could be all about, are most likely completely different things. I believe that all such space/time concepts are ultimately just a "measurement" function of our minds designating our "separation" perception from other "things", meaning they are a language for objective materialistic considerations of our "outer" (macrocosm) reality.

In that outer reality we are about as far from God as we can get, because of that space/time reality, it becoming an "obstacle" for most people who think it only something of other than "this" life.

The reality of God via Spirit is of the INner subjective realization which transcends space/time, being of the NOW of the experience, an experience of the microcosm, the Spirit withIN. An experience of the Mind of God as our Soul relationship to it ... that comes from our Intuition as to what we realize as the "seat" of such experiences ... premonitions are but the tuning in to those more "condensed" space/time units closer to God's Spirit(s) [plural in the sense that there as many as we convince ourselves there are].

January 15th was my most recent impacting premonition, we were in Seattle about 300 miles from home and scheduled to stay the night at my brother's new home that we were helping them move into, after unloading the moving truck I got an overwhelming feeling to go home, I discussed it with my husband and sort of argued with my brother and sister-in-law, as they were insisting we stay after the long day and not driving over Snoqualmie Pass (I90) so late with the winter weather. I compromised and we went to dinner then it HIT me again harder - GO HOME. I convinced my husband that I was fine to drive home the 2 and a half hour drive and we said our goodbyes. Around midnite, we arrived back to our cabin and entered an entirely smoke-filled house, as our pellet stove had caught fire. You could not see your hands in front of your face through the smoke. My husband went straight to the stove, while I sought out to find our 2 unconscious cats. Thankfully, I don't like curtains or we would not have a cabin; we opened up the house to air it out after I revived and treated my cats for smoke inhalation, at 18 degrees, it was quite chilly but we managed to get most of the smoke cleared before retiring for the night. It did take awhile to get the smoke smell from the house, but all is well, as are the two cats.

I've had premonitions since I was a child, some good, some bad but almost always some preperation was necessary for the upcoming event. For quite some time in my teenage years, the only thing that stopped them was alcohol or drugs.

I call it intuition and I believe that all humans have this gift, it is the 'listening' or following this inner voice or knowing, that people generally ignore. For the last 20+ years I have listened to most of my 'inner calls' and the ones that I chose to ignore bit me in the butt, so to speak.

I've had premontions before and I'll probably have a lot more in the future.
I don't claim I'm psychic far from that But the difference from before and what I have today is I do keep an open mind about and wheather people believe me or not I will tell them what my intution says.

Wow, there are some great stories here! Rory, does your sister continue to have her premonitions? And TK, I'm so glad that you listened to your intuition and went home that night.

I, too, have experienced an intuitive knowing about things, but nothing as dramatic as some of these examples. I agree that we probably all have the capability of accessing this ability within ourselves, but I think that we may shut it off out of fear. We may not want to know the future.

Carla, I believe that those two incidents were the only times my sister ever had a premonition. I don't know if it was related to teenage hormonal production or what. I suspect that if one is frightened by the experience and upset that one might turn off the receptor in the brain and shut down the process. It may be that my sister did that. My aunt seemed not to have the option, but chose to try and avoid using her "gift" in the end.

Thanks, Rory. I certainly understand. I was once told by a psychic that I had the gift of being able to see and communicate with people who had passed over, but that I was too afraid to use it. He was right. I have had some communications from my mother, but that has not frightened me. It actually comforted me. My mother told me the exact time that my father would pass on. She woke me up at 4:44 (my mother had a thing about numbers) and said, "Go to the restroom, your dad will pass away at 5:00". Sure enough, I went to the restroom and when I came back, the nurse summoned my husband and I and said it was almost time. He passed away at 5:09.

Numbers ... some of my most interesting "proofs" of intuitive "truths" have been associated with numbers ... especially the 444 and 333 sets. Too related to "other" things and concepts to be just coincidences ... IMnsHO.

My mother was born on 2/22/22, Jerry. And she loved that. When she started contacting me after her passing, she would nudge me during the night at 2:22 or 1:11 and at first I didn't get it. But later I remembered about the numbers and I had to laugh.

One of the most important areas where science and religion intersect is in the understanding of time. In Western religions (Christianity, Judaism for example) time is often convceived as a straight line. But in Eastern faiths (Buddhism, Hinduism) and in contmeporary physics: time is more like a spiral. We can "loop" back through certain moments in time, either forward or backward. If this is true, then premonition may be our dormant ability to "see" these time loops and catch a glimpse of things to come.

That is an interesting concept, Isis, about the loop. Maybe that would account for the experience of deja vu that people have.

I have premonitions like Elsie does, they usually pertained to family and bad things that happened. My mind actually acted as a camera taking a photo of my brother combing his hair in the mantle mirror the night he had been in a car accident, he wasn't the driver. Three days later, and four hours before he died, I knew already in my heart intuitively. We also found out that three weeks before my brother died, he was only 21 then, was trying to get life insurance. I specifically recall he came up to me as well a week before this happened and apologized to me. I had no idea for what!
But since I was young and before caller id came out, it floors me that I know who is calling moments before they do. I don't know why I have that. But I love it!
And my mother had the ability of dreams that came true.
My father knew the moment that he met my mother he was going to marry her and that they would have five chidren.
Cognitive and miraclous I believe

"Intuitive knowing" is how I would describe my experience. I think we all have the ability to see what is coming but the ability must be fostered and respected or it is taken from us by the things that we place above it in our lives.

I see things coming for our nation and then the world that really scare me. Things that make me sad but I rarely share the knowledge because human nature would rather follow the illusion that everything will always be fine and nothing bad will ever happen.

Mary, thank you for sharing your experiences. That is eerie about your brother. It seems that he had a premonition about his own death.

Jimmy, I know what you mean. I, too, have had bad feelings. But I do believe that we can turn things around. We need to all start making decisions consciously and not, as you say, follow the illusion. I think we as a nation have been too caught up with having things and not about becoming better people.

I am with Jimmy on that ... many (countless ?) years ago I had an insight that our world reality was built from the bottom up like an inverted pyramid, or maybe more like a "spinning top" .... the point being that at some point IF it has not been built upon a "foundation" of "truth" ... either the foundation will no longer support that which came later and it will all come crashing down ...

Or of the "top" scenario is used, either the same result or we will become "un-balanced" and crash ...


And these many years later, after coming to understand the vast difference between the duality we have been using of (+/-) ... and the trinity we "should" (and could) be using of (+=-) ... I can see all the better how it takes place ...

"We can't change what we don't acknowledge" as Dr. Phil says. And now that we are conscious of what is wrong, we can begin to fix it. Let's stay focused on what we want to achieve now.

I've had a number of premonitions throughout my life and my general policy is to recognize them, such as when my mother was dying and my beloved dog had been stolen. In each of these cases, I was able to be with my mother as she was dying and I found my dog 3 months after he'd been taken when I awakened after a dream that he was at the SPCA, which is indeed, where he was. When I have ignored premonitions, I have been injured (burned) or otherwise unhappy, afterwards. Christians call these occurances "Word of Knowledge"as written in the New Testament, so my feeling is that these come from God.
