| Adding images to comments can be a fun way to express yourself and your personality. However, using your own images in comments has typically required you to store, or 'host' your images on another website and link to them on Gather. Fortunately, changes in how Gather stores images now allow you to link to any image on Gather and display them in your comments or mail messages. How is this done? Here are the steps for adding images from your Gather image gallery to a comment: - Go to your image gallery.
- Right-click on the desired image.
- From the mouse menu, select 'Properties'.
- A window will appear titled 'Element Properties'.
- Click and drag through the URL (web address) located to the right of Location:
- Copy the URL.
- Go the the article/image/video you wish to comment on.
- Type in the following: <img src=
- Paste the URL you copied in step #6 immediately to the right of the equal sign.
As an example:
<img src=http://media-files.gather.com/d969/small100.jpg
- Now add the > symbol to the end of the URL, with no spaces.
It will then look like this:
<img src=http://media-files.gather.com/d969/small100.jpg>
- Now, add your text for the comment either above, or below the image.
...and you're done! Please feel free to practice here, or within the comments of an article you publish to 'Just Me'.
Notes: You can also center the image in the comment, if desired, or reduce/enlarge the image. To learn how, visit other SiteWizard articles from this past week, or ask in a comment below. Firefox user? -- skip steps 3, 4, 5 and 6. Instead, select "Copy Image Location" from the mouse menu. The image URL will be automatically copied to your clipboard. Tomorrow's Tip ...more on content searching!
| | "I am doing a search for articles or images relating to New York City, and I end up with thousands of entries that have nothing to do with the city. What am I doing wrong?" Gather's content search treats all keywords individually by default. Therefore, entering New York City into the content search box will return all content containing ANY of the words New, York, or City, which could be a very big list, most of which may be unrelated to your request. Fortunately you can narrow your search results in multiple ways, leading to more accurate results. Here's How: - Use quotation marks. Entering new york city as "new york city" will limit the search to this exact phrase, instead of the individual words.
- Use an operand. Gather search allows certain search operands, such as AND, OR and NOT. Using the AND operand (operands must be all upper case letters), you would enter new AND york AND city to locate content containing ALL of these words.
These are only two of the ways in which you can easily narrow your search on Gather, reducing time and effort in locating the content you are interested in.

Gather stores all or most images in multiple sizes...from the very small, to the very large. Plus, some images are slightly larger than they may appear on the site. Therefore, depending upon where you copy the image, it may display larger than expected in your comment.
Thanks Kevin.
Happy Super Bowl Sunday.
Janet -- making a banner can be quick and easy...and you don't need special software programs to create a great looking banner for your group. Just for you, the tip for tomorrow will be on creating group banners with ease!
Thanks for today's great tip! Testing it here.
omg...
it works for gif images too! :-)
This does work for gif images as well, but as Gather does not allow gifs (except for group banners), you still need to have the image hosted elsewhere.
Cute chick! (not you...your image) ;-)
I figured out how to do it by using the HTML editor (ain't I getting good???) Hehehe. The only problem I encountered? The gif got re-sized into a miniscule image.
My new question is --- how do you make sure the image is the same size when it appears in the article?
Using an image in an article can be a bit tricky because Gather can change the display dimensions for the image...either immediately, or a short time after you publish (there is a long explanation for this). Therefore, to avoid this, you must add the width=xxx command to the URL (see the SiteWizard article from yesterday). This will ensure that the image always displays properly.
Most sites that host images (like Photobucket) also provide the width of the image, or you can right-click the image and view the image properties.
Let me know if you run into problems.
Note: You do not need the height of the image. Changing the width will automatically adjust the height to compensate.
*sigh*
Ok... got ya! Thanks, Kevin! You're a
I get confused myself at times... :-(
Thanks and I am so glad that I don't have to remember to search for you every day now!
"Many times I cannot even up-load because I get that white "Page not Found.." page. Is it my dial-up connection?"
It is possible that errors in transmission from a dial-up connection may lead to this problem, however are you uploading images, or videos? Plus, at what point do you get to before you get the "Page not Found" page? ...during the upload?
"But when I do they don't look as clear and crisp as when they are full sized in my picture files under "My Picture" on the computer. Why do some turn out, and some don't?"
Where are the images when you notice that they are not as clear? Are you referring to the smaller versions that display in your image gallery, or when you insert them into your article?
I'll be away for a couple of hours, but will respond when I return. Thanks! :-)
I have meant to try it ( making banners ) many times but never had the patience.
You always make things seem easy.
Looking forward for your Tip tomarrow.
Thanks Again
It would be so nice just to cut and paste together and complete an article- nothing is ever simple.

"When I try to go to the up-load an image page is when it happens - imediately so I never am able to even begin."
Ok...does it happen as soon as you click the 'Publish an Image' link/button? ...and when did you first start experiencing this?
If you have the ability to change the size of your images, always make the width 550pixels. This should provide the best resolution possible (on Gather anyway). Don't upload images which are narrower as the quality will suffer.
Also, do they look ok when you view them in your image gallery? ...and is it only in articles that you notice the change?
Did you just start having this problem? ....and, does it happen every time?
I'll leave you a few suggestions as soon as I can this morning.
I did publish that article yesterday, but it has mysteriously disappeared this morning. I have contacted Gather to see if they can identify what happened to it, and if they can recover it (along with the 20+) comments. I'll let you know if it turns up. :-(
I was going to send you a message anyway once they figure out what happened...no problem!

If you tell me what image you are looking for, or attempting to use, I can paste the code below for you. Then you can play with it, and swap out other images in the same command. It's really quite easy once you get the hang of it! :-)
