I think some people do it becausethey tend to get mean comments so if they approve them then they dont have to allow mean people in. I have never had a problem myself but ya never know!
I think some people use the pages with comments in/for other things. Maybe you can ask those who do. I don't because I feel if someone has something to say everyone should see it. This is a fairly public place with loads of witnesses.
To this question Jan, I have no answers, but know you will get it from the knowledgeable ppl at gather...........I thought that these comments were good....they let you know how others see you........Like I said, I don't know. Sorry bout that. :O)
Those that do so are afraid of comments--maybe they aren't confident enough. There is the remove comment feature. I find it annoying when someone posts an article or photo without allowing comments or ratings. If you don't want to hear what someone thinks, then why bother posting?
Generally it's where people feel so certain of themselves that they want to post an article bashing someone else, yet not let the other person defend themselves.
I do know that there have been some people that have had people going to all of their postings and leaving negative comments just because they could. Several people left Gather because of this. Now, with the no comments or comment approval, they have a little control over it. I personally don't use it, but can see why some might want to.
well i myself do it to avoid ignorant things some people out there find it amusing to do , from being seen by others and i think if enough people out there did this the problem would slow down
I do it for a few reasons, first I like to return comments so it helps me keep track who comments. Another reason since I am a foundation for children of abuse it is for safety reasons as well. I will still post even comments that don't agree with me however if it is regarding on of the children and its bashing them (which I haven't had on gather) I won't post it. I have to be safe in regards to the foundation and the children.
I haven't had significant problems with people leaving obnoxious or offensive comments, so I have always allowed open commenting on my stuff. Sometimes, I get edgy that someone might really attack an article, but I also believe in letting everyone have their say (so long as it's not crass or vulgar). Although an online forum like this can get quite hostile, my experience is that most of us here, on Gather, are civil.

It can vary -- some people do it to keep conversations civil, some may be concerned about spam. I don't do it. Too much of a bother. And I think people are more likely to trust me if I trust them
