The Black Codes were an attempt by the South to maintain a virtual slave state after the Civial War. They were used to control and inhibit the newly-granted freedoms of ex-slaves. The most famous African-American author of the late-1800s was, of course, Frederick Douglass and, in my opinion, the greatest, though still relatively unknown, female black author of the late-19th century was Julia C. Collins. I might be wrong, but I think the first "famous" African-American sailor was Juan las Cananas, who served aboard Columbus's ship, the Santa Maria. There were many reason African-American slaves sang, many of their songs were secret "codes" referring to escape through the Underground Railroad. I'm sorry, I did not understand Question #5. Mary McLeod Bethune worked in education and established the Bethune-Cookman College. She was also an unknown advisor to F.D.R. during the New Deal years, as part of his "secret" Black Cabinet. George Washington Carver and Thomas Elkins were both inventors. Charles C. Spaulding was the founder of the largest and wealthiest all-black organization in the world, part of which was the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company. Okay, I am just guessing that you mean Oprah Winfrey. Question #10 would require more room than I have here and more words than I am willing to type.

I am shamefully ignorant, but I am going to research each of these tomorrow and learn the answers. The only thing I can offer is, #2 - Langston Hughes? I need to look that up, too, so forgive me if I'm wrong. Thanks for opening my brain. ;-)

I feel so bad that I don't know the answers. I know Eli Whitney was an inventor. Phyllis Wheatley was a young girl who wrote -- poems, I think.

Comment on #3. Don't know, but I do know that no Americans, white or black, sailed with Christopher Columbus. Columbus was from Italy and since Isabella and Ferdinand sponsor his voyages most of his crew was probably Spanish. If a black sailor named Juan las Cananas sailed with Columbus the name suggests a mixture of Spanish and African blood and he probably was born before the rest of the world knew that what became known as America even existed.
