This is a direct quote from the wired.com science blog from earlier in the week. When I read the entire article it just infuriated me, as I am a cancer survivor and do not want to be drinking milk or anything with hormones or the growth factor that is suspect in helping cancer cells proliferate.
The most disgusting part of this article, of course, is that the bill is using the phony titles generally credited to the Bush/Cheney Administration. It claims to protect consumers from mislabeling, yet its real goal is to eliminate the labeling to protect those beef and other agricultural producers who have genetically modifed the food supply or used methods of production or additives that some of us find morally, ethically and scientifically repugnant.
I would suggest that anyone who is interested in having the right to know exactly where our food is generated from, how it is produced, what additives or other chemicals are in the food, etc., join a consumer group or contact your state and U.S. representatives and senators. There are all kinds of arguments being bantered about.
One dairy in Oregon that uses non-organic methods of producing milk was trying to get a law passed that would prevent another dairy from using words like, 'locally grown', 'naturally produced', 'free of hormones', etc. This is ridiculous in a free country, but they claimed the 'natural dairy' was competing unfairly by 'implying' naturally-produced milk was healthier for consumers. Duh.
It makes me pull my hair out. If you want to see the entire article go to wired.com and then go to its science blog. If you live in Indiana and want full disclosure, you'd better get on the horn before they circumvent the consumer and pass this law, although you may already be too late as the article states it was expected to come up for a vote any day.

Indiana May Ban Hormone Labeling to Protect MonsantoHB. 1300, which could be voted on any day, is couched as legislation to protect consumers from mislabeling. But it would prevent dairy labels that contain a "compositional or production-related claim that is supported solely by sworn statements, affidavits, or testimonials." In other words, anything related to the moral or ethical dimensions of the product would be off-limits.
A bill introduced in the Indiana House of Representatives by Bill Friend, a rep from tiny Macy, Indiana, would make his state the first to prevent consumers from knowing how their milk was produced.
I'd love to hear what is going on in this arena in your town or state.

I stoped drinking milk 30 years ago my doctor told me adults do not need milk, its bad for you. So I quit. Less colds etc. No mucus.
The goverment is trying to kill off people mostly the aged they remember the past and the gov. would like it forgotten so they can rewrite it for the future. Sad man kills its own flesheaters all of them.
Please send this to ALL your contacts. It is THAT important.
A drug manufacturer, Eli Lilly and Co. is being sued for mislabeling - a different matter but speaks to honesty and the profit motive, the twain don't meet, in other words.
Lilly makes Zyprexa, an antipsychotic for schizophrenia and psychotic features of bipolar - but doctors are prescribing it for dementia in alzheimers, anxiety, depression or mild bipolar without psychotic features. Zyprexa has been known to cause diabetes, because it raises blood sugar. The problem does not lie so much with the doctors as with the claims Eli Lilly made: that Zyprexa can be prescribed for conditions other than that for which it was originally studied - anxiety, depression, dementia, mild bipolar.
I don't see how knowing what is in something is bad, unless they're trying to hide something. On the other hand, just because something is "natural" or "organic" doesn't mean it is good for you.
As for sending this to all your contacts, that happens automatically when you publish.
Oh, yes, J.K., Alexis is my son and he is a journalist for Wired.com. I have disclosed this several times when I quote something from his articles, but this one had me fuming and foaming at the mouth so I forgot to fully disclose the relationship.
Buy some livestock and a few acres and raise your own food.
Real independence , but sadly impractical.
When the lobbyists for the corporations come to town, the legislators seemed to roll over and put their paws up in the air.
To Lyn and George: And here I thought Wisconsin was the place with two seasons: winter and construction.
But back to Monsanto for a minute. You would think these companies would see the advantage of being green. They can charge more money for the food, get the positive press for being green, and then actually do something meaningful for the environment.
Ever since then I've been steadily gaining. Where I once had a waistline, I now have the classic "beer belly" shape of Metabolic Syndrome and was diagnosed with that problem 2 years ago. I've added back the 77 lbs plus another 10 but it's like a pillow on my front. I would not touch anything that comes from Monsanto, including genetically altered, sterile seeds that will not produce a second crop. Fake food.
I don't need a label. Every time I eat meat with hormones I have terrible hot flashes that night. And I had a complete hysterectomy years ago and am almost 70.
I won't drink milk from any except small local dairy or farmer, because the horror tales from the people who work in those cruel large dairies are nightmare stuff. Cows unable to walk because of enlarged bags and udders. Infected.. uh... "stuff" going right into the milk through the machines, etc. Sick, sick, sick.
