New York is geographically and culturally diverse state presenting a specatular buffet of interesting foods

Official state foods
New York State has several "official" state foods. These are voted on/approved by the state's lawmakers in Albany.

State fruit: apple
State beverage: milk
State muffin: apple muffin

State fish: speckled trout
State shell: bay scallops
State tree: sugar maple

New York also has several popular foods associated with the state. Some of the most famous are:

  • Buffalo Wings (Buffalo)
  • Thousand Island Dressing (Clayton)
  • Potato Chips (Saratoga Springs)
  • Manhattan style clam chowder (NYC)
  • Cheese (cream, cottage & cheddar) (Monroe County)
  • Duck(Long Island)
  • Waldorf salad (Waldorf Hotel, NYC)
  • Jell-O (invented in Leroy, NY)
  • NY Pizza (NYC)
  • Pastrami on Rye (NYC)
  • Classic Black & White Cookie ( NYC)

In case anyone is wondering what Spiedies are - they are marinated chunks of meat (Any variety although I am a fan of chicken!) that are skewered and cooked on the outdoor grill. Served on Italian bread with real butter. That is what Binghamton NY is famous for, other than carousels!

And the roasted chestnuts. My grandfather, who lived in NYC from the time my father was very small and just outside it all his life, took me walking the streets of Manhattan on crisp autumn days. He'd buy a paper cone of them to share with me. Roast chestnuts alwayas make me think if NYC.

Being a Brooklyn girl, I also have to mention Ebingers Black Out Cake (still made in a small factory that re-started in the 1990's when they were out of business for a long time). Also, Nathan's was one of the first fast food places in the country, opened in the 1920's. I used to spend my summers at their store in Coney Island. First place I ever had a hot dog, french fries and corn on the cob. Knishes from the Knish Man on the beach, oh I could go on and on.

Philadelphia may be known for their hot pretzels but I didn't go there until I was 25 and I had my first hot pretzels on the streets of Manhattan when I was a child. With mustard, of course.

John's Pizza on Bleeker Street, there are so many foods that are purely NYC!

I forgot to mention - thanks for mentioning Mallomars! No one on the left coast knows about these because they are only sold in NY, NJ and Ct as far as I know. When I lived in Boston I couldn't get them there. I missed them so.

Also, the thin chocolate wafers that are only sold in cold months - they are thin and come in small boxes? I forget the name of the company or the product. I've only seen them in the NY area for years.

You can get mallomars down in Florida, my hubby loves them. He grew up in New York. We lived in New York for 6 years and the food is the best in the world, there are so many places to choose from! New York Style cheesecake is the best and you haven't had cheesecake until you have had Juniors... Coney Island was a treat when my parents brought us there. Knishes, Nathan's hot dogs, it didn't get any better than that. There is no pizza in the world like New York Pizza. When my husband has flown up he always buys fresh hot bagels while driving to the airport and we share them with neighbors and friends. It's something in the water that makes the bagels so good!

I will always miss NY Pizza. Whenever I go back it is one of the things I must have first! My sister doesn't understand that she doesn't need to make me a big roast dinner. Just bring home pizza! Oh and bakeries with all the wonderful rolls! My sister does that for me whenever I am back home. Pastrami on rye is something that I truly love and miss. Oh and black and white cookies! I have to stop! I am getting hungry and homesick all the same time! lol

This type of snow cone was invented in Puerto Rico and can be found all over NYC. It has been very popular since the 1930s.

Ok..good list but there's quite a bit missing. What about garbage plates made famous by Nick Tahous?. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Tahou_Hots ..Or white hots http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_hot ...Buffalo chicken pizza could be another maybe? Idk we already kinda own pizza but who knows...also.if you like peanut butter try it on a hot dog with mustard..no joke
