I love those "Today in History" posts that many people put here on Gather. I'd like to show the flip side a bit too though. There is a site that dedicates itself to "Rotten History" of the particular day! Here are some of their posts for February 1st:
Feb 1 1861
Texas secedes from the Union, becoming independent once again. Since the articles of statehood passed by the U.S. Congress give Texas this right, it is perhaps the only state whose secession was legal.
Feb 1 1964
Governor Matthew Welsh of Indiana declares "Louie, Louie" by the Kingsmen "pornographic". And while the FCC couldn't figure out the lyrics, the governor's move backfires by making the song one of the most covered titles in existence.
Feb 1 1970
US Government report reveals that 31% of college students have tried pot, man.
Feb 1 2003
The Space Shuttle Columbia blows up on re-entry, with its debris hitting homes and businesses in Nacogdoches Texas.
Feb 1 2004
During the MTV-provided halftime show of the Superbowl, former boy band member Justin Timberlake conducts an obviously pre-scripted move to expose Janet Jackson's right tit, which oddly sports a ninjitsu-style throwing star as a pasty. The nation is shocked, simply shocked, that a pristine, noncommercial event such as the Superbowl could be ruined by a Jackson.

This had me ROFLMAO... I remember this happening and thought it pretty crazy at the time too!
JoAnne, I think so, but I also think they make their own money too! So you have to have "Texas Tommy" Dollars to spend there!
B.F, I kind of like this angle on history also. Although some like the Space Shuttle explosion are quite tragic!
Have a great weekend all!
CHORUS:
Louie Louie, oh no
Me gotta go
Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said
Louie Louie, oh baby
Me gotta go
Fine little girl waits for me
Catch a ship across the sea
Sail that ship about, all alone
Never know if I make it home
CHORUS
Three nights and days I sail the sea
Think of girl, constantly
On that ship, I dream she's there
I smell the rose in her hair.
CHORUS
Okay, let's give it to 'em, right now!
GUITAR SOLO
See Jamaica, the moon above
It won't be long, me see me love
Take her in my arms again
Tell her I'll never leave again
CHORUS
Let's take it on outa here now
Let's go!!
Wade, thank you for giving the words and proving just how silly our politicians can be!
Julie, Govenor Welsh is more than likely gone to the great beyond but is probably rolling over in his grave over "Sexy Back" and many other of today's great songs!
Glen, time has flown by hasn't it? I can almost picture the day that I saw the Challenger explosion on TV right after it happened just like it happened yesterday!
Marge, Controversy does make so many things take off and gaves them popularity that that wouldn't have had otherwise! Louie, Louie, hasn't gotten a life of its own from that. It has been featured in movies, in comedy skits and many other things!
Bert, can you tell me of any day when something interesting happened in Gettsburg, South Dakota? In fact I didn't even know there was a gettsburg, SD!
I am glad that everyone liked these and I will try to keep them up every day. But as Glen said time just has flown by and my age and memory has gone with it! ;-)
I remember that "wardrobe malfunction." That family sure knows how to hit the headlines and stay there! Hell, how many catch phrases and sayings have come from the Jackson family? And the jokes afterwards by the late night show hosts were hilarious! Wardrobe malfunction has become a catch phrase like "Where's the beef?" was 20 years ago. (Oh GOD was it really that long ago???)
Green skies - what would our world be if the sky weren't blue? What if we only believe it to be blue because we've convinced ourselves of such?
What if nothing in our reality is more than what we imagine it to be, and in reality, nothing exists?
