I really enjoyed this book too. While this isn't my favorite vampire series, it's definitely an enjoyable one.

I really enjoyed the first three Sookie Stackhouse books, but after that I think they tend to drop off in quality. There's continuity errors, her character becomes less likeable, and I had a problem with the series when a short story was published in an anthology about Sookie's cousin Hadley, and the next book in the series jumped right in after the short story, leaving gaps in the action and me and my sisters (who I introduced to the series) totally confused until we looked it up online. I've stuck with Sookie for 7 books, but I don't think I'll be buying the next one. My sister volunteered to screen it for me, but it's going to have to be a big improvement to bring me back.

I would recommend the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. The third book came out recently, and all of them were fantastic. It's more focused on shifters than the sookie books, but also feature vamps and the fae (in this case, it's the fae who come out of the closet).
