I used to live next door to an armory. Beginning on 9-11, there were marines, with guns, eyeballing us and our cars out as we came and went.

Before 9/11, I was asked this question when traveling overseas. Since then, I was asked when traveling in the continential US. I was also told to keep your carry on bag with you at all times. If it is left somewhere in the airport, it would be taken by security, again, only when traveling overseas before 9/11 and then traveling in the US after 9/11.
