No one should be surprised that both Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Senator John McCain have emerged as their party's respective front-runners and presumptive nominees after this latest round of brush-clearing before Super Tuesday.
Since the Presidential race started shortly after the returns were counted in the 2004 election, it is not too early to speculate who will be the running mates for Hillary and McCain.
On the Democrat side, I expect Senator Clinton to tap retired NATO Commander, General Wesley Clark. Gen. Clark gives the New York Senator some street-cred on the "national security issue," since Hillary already is well-spoken in matters relating to putting a chicken in every pot, and a medical card in every wallet.
Also, General Clark helps offset the "war hero" image that Senator McCain brings to the race as he himself has quite a distinguished military record.
It would be naive to assume that the twin demons of racism/sexism will recede once the convention has commenced. Conscious that the ticket will be weak with Southern-white males, tapping Clark is a natural geographic (he is from Arkansas) and demographic balance to a ticket headed by woman.
I cannot begin to divine what is in the mind of Senator John McCain, with regard to who his running mate might be.
Political hatchet-man-turned-pundit, Bob Beckel opined on this morning's Fox and Friends that the Arizona Senator would wind up with Mitt Romney as a running mate because Gov. Romney, having stayed in the race to the convention, has the delegates to actually demand that he be put on the ticket.
Mr. Beckel also reasoned that Gov. Romney's presence would provide the ticket with someone with the credentials and experience on economic matters; something Senator McCain is weak on.
One thing is for certain, whoever the nominees are, and whoever they chose for their running mates, it almost certainly will be headline-grabbing!
(P.S. John Edwards is keeping his powder dry because he wants to be Attorney General for either Hillary or Obama!)

Secondly, a boring, milktoast rather moderate type will be her running mate. Folks such as Bayh and Vilsack come to mind. (Keep in mind Bill will be the real vice-/co- president. This person will simply be the placeholder.)
For McCain, it will be a young, almost raving, excitable/exciting young person (or at least someone who comes across accordingly). Fred Thompson does not fit this description, although Huckabee and even Romney (Yes, I said Romney, but they hate each other so much....) do. Given that McCain seems so insecure, and therefore wants nobody perceived as threatening, I think that Huckabee would be an ideal choice. He can easily get at the "not a real conservative" charge. Further, Norris was right. Huckabee (or whomever) will almost certainly become president, or have the inside track in four (yes, four!) years.
i gotta think she's going with wes clark. she's not going to want mccain to have national security bragging rights. i know peeps are bitching about the economy, but we are one terrorist incident away from this being on the front burner. it only has to happen anywhere in europe, and we'll want to feel safe.
i will read your article right now! i'm off for a couple of days, so i'll be all over this damn site. :)
thanks for checking in!!!
obama won't be the top; the democrat party will never, ever in 1,000,000 years give the standard bearer to a minority candidate. they would kiss the elction goodbye. there is too big of a democrat, southern white boy vote they would lose, that is why it will be wesley clark.
you'll see. !!!!!
"My kingdom is not of this world..."
I love John Edwards, but i can see where you're coming from in regards to him staying out of it. I think there is no way Obama would get the VP vote - two minorities on one ticket is just too much!
I don't follow the Republicans as much as I should...
Thanks for stopping by, April! :)
Wes Clark is a soldier-boy, which gives Hillary another set of testicles, besides hers, and Bill's. This will be the perfect "Boob-bait for Bubbas" who are not happy about a woman at the top of the ticket.
RE: GWB not "knowing about Washington;" remember, he was basically his father's chief of staff. GWB is not the dolt people think he is, despite the fact that he is not as eloquent as Obama. I'm not a fan; I just think it is silly that people think they know so much about Presidential IQs not having met the people they are talking about, and not having had any exposure to their past.
RE: Obama's VP--don't worry, Obama will never be allowed to get the nomination, no matter how much money he raises. The Democrat party will have a hard enough time getting the Southern White Male Vote (which is still a sizable constintuency) to vote for her, let alone a 1/2 black man. He'll never get close to wearing the crown OR being VP.
Ted Kennedy "getting the job through the back door?" I'll leave that one alone; it is too silly to even debunk.
The Internet is a wonderful place. If you would like, I could email a list of sites that you could bookmark that would ensure you would stay very informed on the issues from now and long past the election.
Let me know :)
