Today I received the below in my personal email account. Did anyone else get this? Is it a hoax? Looks suspicious because they only say I am a "potential" winner and still want my name, physical address and phone number. I think I'll hit the "trash" button.
Hi There!
Congratulations! You have been selected as a Potential Prize Winner for truTV's (formerly Court TV) VOTE FOR THE NEXT GREAT CRIME WRITER SWEEPSTAKES in which you have recently participated by entering online at courttv.gather.com. This is an email notification advising you of your potential Prize of:
A $50 gift card to BORDERS
(Actual Retail Value ("ARV"): $50)
Before we can officially deem you one of the Prize Winners for the truTV VOTE FOR THE NEXT GREAT CRIME WRITER SWEEPSTAKES, we must receive an email confirmation from you accepting the prize in its entirety along with your first name, last name, physical address (no P.O. Boxes) and phone number to where we can deliver the prize, NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2008. Please note we will be delivering your potential prize via FedEx and someone must be available to sign for the package. All prizes will be delivered "as is" and will not be replaced if lost or stolen. Please make sure the address you provide is one where you will be available to sign for and accept the package.
If we do not receive a response from you by FRIDAY, February 1 2008, it will result in disqualification and an alternate winner will be selected.

I would think it is probably legitimate, actually ... there were prizes for comments
I wish Gather, if they are connected to such sweepstakes as this , would advise us before we receive such notifications.
whatever... I'm sure you don't have to accept the $50 if you don't want to give them your address.
Angie - I worked too many years in a Sheriff's Office and County Attorney's Office methinks? I'm skittish about such things.
So you never know what people are capable of.
BTW he never paid his bill.
As Flit pointed out above, this 'potential' prize is legitimate. I also agree with you that Gather should be involved in the notification process in some way. You are wise to be cautious.
Congratulations on your 'potential' win! ;-)

Thanks for posting this. I'll check with our truTV contact now and get back to you.

I have just connected with truTV and YES this is legit. GEM Group is an agency working with truTV. truTV is alerting GEM that they need to be very clear that they are an agency working on behalf of truTV when communicating with Gather members.
Thanks for checking with us. And it looks like congratulations are in order for you!
Mariana - It says "potential", that's what made me think it might be a scam. I get all kinds of "junk" in both email and snail saying the same thing. Potential could include ALL members of Gather.
Nana - Thanks for getting back to me Nana!! Appreciate you.
If they wanted to give it out bad enough, they would have CALLED you!
