iUniverse vs. Lulu - What do you think?

In the past, I've self published a couple of short story collections through Lulu. Given that the combined 'sales' (freebies for friends, mostly) were only about 30 copies, I knew better to invest much money into the project. I was really happy with how Lulu worked, the quality of the product, and the price.

I am now ready to self publish my first completed full-length novel. I've considered going back with Lulu again, then I recently discovered iUniverse.com. Since then, I've noticed several books in my local B&N and Borders that were published via iUniverse. They have distribution packages starting at $599, and I'm wondering if it is really worth it.

If you ever used iUniverse for your own work, or know someone that has, what was your experience with it?

Thanks, Sylvie. I know exactly what you mean about doing your own proofreading and such. I've already had 5 other people look over my work. It is mostly of local interest, which is why I've had problems finding an interested publisher. I decided it might be best to just self-publish, then if it does well I may be able to interest a publisher. Our local newspaper and TV station and really great about promoting locals who do stuff like this, so I think I can get some good publicity that way.
