It's official: Bond film number 22, the latest installment in the Bond series, has a name: QUANTUM OF SOLACE, as announced Thursday this week. Daniel Craig returns to the role of James Bond, which he re-energized, against the critic's expectations, turning CASINO ROYALE into the largest grossing Bond film ever, reportedly over $300 million worldwide.
This time around, the producers threaten to delve more deeply into Bond's psyche than they did in CASINO ROYALE. (As if exposing Bond's rocky beginnings as a 'double-oh' and why he has become such a seemlingly heartless womanizer wasn't enough.) During the press conference, co-producer Barbara Brocolli said, "It's not a revenge movie. It's far more complicated than that. It has lots of action but it also deals with the inner turmoil Bond is feeling."
Producer Michael Wilson promises that QUANTUM will have "twice as much action" as CASINO.
Wow. Twice the action and a deeper-dive into Bond's mind and feelings?
This should be one very interesting Bond flick.
The title is meeting with mixed reviews. Already, there is a firestorm of confused controversy. (Those sly Brits! With Casino Royale, they tossed us a 'blonde Bond' and now a freakishly unnerving title. Clever!) It is said that some reporters at the press conference seemed 'confused' by the title. (Can you picture some looking up quantum and solace on dictionary.com? Immediately, I thought of a 'time/amount of comfort', but of course, revenge must come first.)Â
Daniel Craig said the cryptic title referenced how Bond's heart had been broken at the end of Casino Royale.
"Ian Fleming had written about relationships," he explained. "When they go wrong, when there's nothing left, when the spark has gone, when the fire's gone out, there's no quantum of solace. And at the end of the last movie, Bond has the love of his life taken away from him and he never got that quantum of solace."
What about the latest Bond girls? Apparently, there are two. MI6 Agent Fields (newcomer Gemma Arterton) and Camille (Olga Kurylenko also seen in HITMAN (2007) as well as FHM, October 2007 issue). Guess which one plays the bad girl?
Plot Synopsis:Â Betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, 007 fights the urge to make his latest mission personal. Pursuing his determination to uncover the truth, Bond and M (JUDI DENCH) interrogate Mr White (JESPER CHRISTENSEN) who reveals the organisation which blackmailed Vesper is far more complex and dangerous than anyone had imagined.
Forensic intelligence links an Mi6 traitor to a bank account in Haiti where a case of mistaken identity introduces Bond to the beautiful but feisty Camille (OLGA KURYLENKO), a woman who has her own vendetta. Camille leads Bond straight to Dominic Greene (MATHIEU AMALRIC), a ruthless business man and major force within the mysterious organisation.
On a mission that leads him to Austria, Italy and South America, Bond discovers that Greene, conspiring to take total control of one of the world's most important natural resources, is forging a deal with the exiled General Medrano (JOAQUIN COSIO). Using his associates in the organisation, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land.
In a minefield of treachery, murder and deceit, Bond allies with old friends in a battle to uncover the truth. As he gets closer to finding the man responsible for the betrayal of Vesper, 007 must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel Greene's sinister plan and stop his organisation." Trivia: The title, QUANTUM OF SOLACE is from a work of short fiction included in an Ian Fleming collection titled FOR YOUR EYES ONLY (1960). There is no indication at this point, whether any elements of the original story will be used in the latest film, but it would appear the producers were only interested in the title.
