For Christmas, Lena, a parent of one of my kindergarteners gave me a gift certificate to have my cards read. Having never done this before, I was a wee bit apprehensive. Would the Reader tell me something I was not ready to hear? Was Tarot Reading for Real or just a side show at a Carnival of Fair?
The day before New Year's Lena called and asked if we might not go the next day....New Year's...new adventure. I said yes. On our ride over to Hingham, we agreed that she would go first and I would listen and be the scribe. That way I could become more relaxed with the whole idea.
The Tarot Reader was an older woman with silver gray strands peppered throughout her brown hair. She was playing a game of solitaire on the computer as we walked into the small comfortable office that she called home. Turning towards us, and looking straight into my eyes she remarked, "Well, you are an old soul I see and have come around many times. I am most excited about reading YOUR cards!" Oh my, my hands began to sweat. I assured her that Lena was going first and that I would follow. For Lena, I would act as a scribe and take notes. That would keep my eyes concentrated on the task at hand and my mind free to think about what was being said. I asked if she minded if I took pictures. "Oh, no...not at all", she said, "Some people even videotape a session."
Pia first asked Lena some important questions about her family and then looked in her large red book. She described Lena, her husband and her two children. Then Pia got out the cards, shuffled them and spread them out in front of Lena. "Choose twenty cards", she implored.

I busily scribed all that was said...and was beginning to feel quite comfortable with this Card Reader. I could tell Lena felt the same....and was enjoying the most poistive reading.

All to soon, it was my turn. Lena and I exchanged seats. Once again the Red Book came out.

I sat calmly as she described Papa, Will, Zach and Aaron. She knew Aaron had passed but she said "his energy was bouncing off the walls because he wanted to tell me he loved my hair long once more and that "he was in the place he needed to be."
Then it was time for the cards. "Choose twenty", she said.

"An ancient soul, a nurturer of life
Sitting around a campfire with
herbs and wild flowers administering
to the needs of others."

"A storyteller, writing comes easy
A teacher of life with Great Truths
Reveiled from a Native American Way."

"A wedding and a graduation
Grandbabies four to six
A long life, a set of twins
A record of my life."

In the end, what can I say? For the most part, she didn't tell me anything I didn't know. That a young man should show up at the reading gave me no surprise...for do not I know his energy is always with me...do I not feel his presence surround me as I go about my tasks of living each day? As for the wedding....I'm wondering who? And the degree? But one thing I do know, come this Spring, I will plant cabbages four to six! For did not my Mother tell me long ago, "Babies come from Cabbages!"

Tried to learn to do this, but I can't seem to devote the time.
But it does sound interesting.

Thanks for posting to "All Photo Essays Here".
Your article is a Feature in the Triple Name Club.
spring is in the air,and you know what that does to boys.
do your sons know about your cabbages.
My boys are well aware that I am going to plant cabbages this Spring....the other night at my birthday dinner Will just hugged me and said "dream on, peaches" and zach picked me up and danced around the floor laughing his head off. Zach did say, "Wait a few years, Mom, you'll have what you want...just not now. Trish needs to finish her education." That does give me hope!
Ten stars from me for an interesting read ... and I don't mean Tarot cards, either.
I tried to post the comment above and Gather sent me to the sin bin. I sinned and was happy, and now have risen from the burning pits to at last post my comment.

There are good psychics out there who are using the cards as a means to put into words the messages they receive. On the other hand there are many charlatans as well.
But, there is not a single person who doesn't want to hear about what's in store, although they say " I did it for fun"
I found your appraisal of the tarot reading experience quite even handed, Elizabeth.
Again, I liked your photo essay approach here. I think hands are one of the things most worth photographing on the planet, anyway!
That was the first tarot card reading I´d ever heard of with so many cards--twenty! Most often here in Europe it is seven.
