Wash clothes in cold water. Since 80% of electricity in washing is used for heating the water, using cold rather than hot will save as much as 2,500 kilowatt-hours of power a year - more than twice the average household's monthly bill. (Source: The Canadian Energy Efficiency Centre)
My Earth Hour news...
So ....I emailed a couple of people last night and had answers back today - the first was to our Town office, who supports the idea and told me what I need to do in order to get the Township on board
... just need to write a letter about it, and also, it would be good to find a 'professional' type resource to confirm that it is highly unlikely that there would be any problem with the power grid when people turn back on .... there were no problems in Sydney last year, and TO Hydro is supporting the event in Toronto
... but still ... it keeps being raised as a concern, so it must be addressed. I have found a few blogs that mention it - but mostly they are people raising it as a reason the event shouldn't happen (there are those in every bunch, aren't there?) ... not anybody that knows anything more than you or I do. In fact, some of them sounded like downright KOOKS!
Anyway ... if you happen to come across anything of interest about that particular topic, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know.* I have also emailed the WWF using the contact info they provided .... seems to me that it should be addressed in their PDF already ... but since it isn't.... can't hurt to ask.
The other emails were to people at the college - and it looks like they are also looking at not only participating, but at taking a lead role in encouraging the city & others to participate as well... my name will be passed on as willing to be part of organizing things there.
And my kid is getting involved as well...she's using Earth Hour as a topic for one of her assigments, which is cool ...but I will let her write her own article about that.
And here on Gather
Kevin featured Earth Hour 2008 in his Daily Digest today, and we gained several new members... we're at 132 now.... Thanks Kevin :)
And here are a few articles posted today that might interest you ... if I've missed any, please do feel free to bring them to my attention, or better yet, mention them in a comment. And of course anything related to the environment is welcome to be posted in the group directly.... I'm looking forward to some other people articles!
* PS re: letting me know ~stuff~ ... comments are usually better than gather mail... you'd be surprised how many people are in my blocked senders list. Not suggesting you are, but....
