OK, as you all know, I'm a gamer geek. So is my significant other, Mike. We have boxes of D&D minis scattered around the house. We still have a few dozen of the old "lead" minis as well (fortunately, there are no kiddies in the house to risk lead poisoning!). We have elf and dwarf armies, a few dozen kobolds (hehe, MY kobolds!), orcs, werebears, beholders, oozes, trolls, a storm giant, and...of course..dragons.
Most of the dragons are the young adult varieties. We have a copper and a brass and a zombie white dragon, a small black dragon and a small blue (an old lead figure). But what Mike has always wanted were the BIG dragons. The "Oh crap we're all gonna die!" size dragons. A couple of years ago, he found a Gargantuan Blue Dragon at a convention and picked it up for only $20. Blues are his favorite dragons, so he was a happy boy.
Now besides Dragons, Mike has always been on the lookout for two specific figures, Mina and Drizzt. He managed to get a Mina figure in a random booster pack, but Drizzt had eluded him. We'd see a Drizzt mini online or at a convention sold individually, but the vendors would ask anywhere from $50-$150 for it. As much as we're fans of the drow, we wern't about to dump that kind of money on a single little mini.
So last year at a Convention, we found another a gargantuan white dragon...but not just ANY white dragon. No, this was IcingDeath, in a complete scenario box with Wulfgar and Drizzt. It was only $40, and not only did it finally bring Drizzt to our collection, but we got another dragon and Wulfgar to boot.
But the grand prize of all the dragon minis is the colossal red dragon. Calling it a "mini" just doesn't seem fitting. The thing is monstrous in size. It weighs more than some small dogs, and is about a foot high. But it's usually $80-$100, and as such we've just never been able to justify the purchase.
So Mike decided he wanted to get the gargantuan black dragon, feeling the need to add to his dragon arsenal. He asked me to order it from Amazon, where he found it for $30. And that is when I saw the combo deal. The black dragon AND the Colossal red for only $82. With the new version of D&D (and therefore new minis) around the corner, I figured this might be the last chance to get the red for him.
It was going to be a surprise for Valentine's Day, but he came into the room as I was completing the order and saw it. Suffice it to say, he's very happy. ;-) He's clearing a spot on the entertainment center to display all of the dragons.
Who needs stuffed teddy bears and boxes of chocolate to show affection when you can give your loved one a fire breathing dragon?

And we are NOT nerds...we're geeks. There is a world of difference.
