"Desdemona!" lady Kaida yelled from the top of the stairs. Lady Kaida is the mistress of Ravenwing Manor. My parents died when I was seven, and not many jobs are open to orphans, especially not female ones, so I became a housekeeper for lady Kaida. "Desdemona, get your filthy, lazy little a*s up here before I put you back in the orphanage where you belong!"
"Yes ma'am. I'm coming" I answered before pulling myself off of the small pile of straw that I call my bed, and yanking the cleaner of my two tattered, brownish-gray dresses over my head. It was true that lady Kaida isn't always kind to me, but she does take care of me. She feeds me, if not well, I still get enough to get by. She clothes me, even if I do only have two dresses, and she houses me, even though I live in a dusty old basement with the spiders and rats. I have no choice but to be grateful. Once dressed I trudged up the rickety wooden stairs to the main hall. I remember coming here once when I was little to visit. I remember feeling like I was in one of the fairytale castles from the stories my mother used to read to me. The giant marble staircase looked so majestic, illuminated by the light of the crystal chandelier that hung above lady Kaida's statue of the Virgin Mary, but all of the magic of the room faded away after the first few weeks of working here.
"Well it's about time you got up her. Fetch the water." Lady Kaida snapped, handing me a wooden bucket, and shoving me out the door. I walked hastily along the cobblestone street toward the well. As always a line of talkative, gossipy young women had formed. I took my place at the end of the line and waited for what seemed like hours before I finally reached the front of the line.
"Desdemona am I correct?" a young man's voice asked from behind me. I turned around to see the two most amazing faces I had ever seen.
"Yes, that's me." I replied in a daze. They both had fine white-blonde hair and obsidian black eyes. They were both clad in black and standing in the deepest shadow around. "And may I ask who you two are?"
"Oh my, please forgive me." The one on the left replied. "I'm Zane, and this is my twin brother Zeki." Zane pointed toward his twin, who lifted his hand in a lazy wave before dropping it to his side. "I don't expect you to be able to tell us apart, but if you really feel the need to call us by our correct names, you can tell us apart by the markings on our right hands. I'm fire, and Zeki is water."
"That's all fine and good, but might I ask how you came to know my name?" I inquired. Zane glanced at his brother who simply replied
"Our parents were friends with yours before they died."
-Zeki's P.O.V.-
Desdemona nodded and looked down at her feet. "You still haven't gotten over them have you?" I asked. She looked up and smiled at Zane and I.
"I'm fine," she said. "I've got to get home now. Lady Kaida is going to kill me for taking so long." And she ran off toward Ravenwing Manor.
"Do you really think she's the one?" Zane asked. "She doesn't seem like the kind of person who could?"
"It's her." I answered bluntly.
"Well are you sure she's ready?" he asked.
"She's ready. Trust me." I replied, and walked off in the direction of the manor.
"if you say so." Zane sighed and walked after me, both of us being careful to remain in the shadows.
