Today was the first day of the Toronto Star's Earth Hour coverage - which is where I first heard about the whole Earth Hour thing.... that would be the paper that hubby was kicking through the snow for a good 5 minutes to find this morning.
They kicked it off big, with the release of a video called Airsick, which was created by Toronto Star photographer Lucas Oleniuk, and which addresses the issue of global warming.
They also filled the Ideas section with a collection of excellent essays by well known (at least in Canada) Canadian authors including:
- Margaret Atwood who you've all heard of even if she IS Canadian, right? Her essay is On Lake Erie's Demise.
- Wayne Grady who wrote an excellent piece that I think everyone should read - if you're only going to read one, this should be the one!
- Austin Clarke, who I've written about on Gather before because he's a regular at the Leacock Festival in Orillia
- And several other excellent authors.
The Toronto Star Countdown site includes a Go Green tip of the day (today's tip is about how to use less energy to boil water for tea), links to all of the above articles and more, and a Weekly Challenge (This week - switch to compact flourescent light bulbs & turn off phantom power suckers - okay, the call them vampires, but I detest vampires, so...).
I enourage you to stop by and have a look.... and would love to know
- what you think about anything you come across at the Toronto Star site
- what your area is doing! Any plans/media coverage yet? Tell us about it - and if you haven't heard a word about it yet, maybe it is time to call THEM and ask what they intend to do.
If you haven't yet, I encourage you to join Earth Hour 2008 here on Gather - we would love to have you :)
We can make a difference - and if you have doubts about that, did I mention that Leap of Faith, by Wayne Grady, is very much worth reading?

And I've read a few of Atwood's books...and I knew she was Canadian...
