On 31 March 2007, more than 2 million Sydney businesses and households turned off their lights for one hour - Earth Hour - sending a powerful national and global message that it's possible to take action on global warming.
At 8pm on 29 March 2008, Earth Hour goes global, with cities and towns around the world taking stand on the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, and millions of people uniting to turn the tide on global warming.
Is your city committed to turning off its lights? Are you?
For more information, and to make your commitment to turn off your lights - and maybe even your computer as well? - stop by earthhour.org
Wouldn't it be cool if we here on gather could get a whole lot more places jumping in? There is information about how to do that right here.
One hour to make a difference.... it doesn't seem like so much to ask, does it?
Oh! I forgot to add a link to the group.... here you go...I hope you will join us

I think we should have an earth hour party here on gather.... all off for the hour...but then come back and chat and celebrate :)
That's why I started the group....we'll post articles at LEAST weekly ... hopefully other people will contribute too
As for Judi wondering if there's a day for not using cars...I do that every day. Once gas prices hit $2 and stayed there, i got rid of my car...well over 3 years ago. Now that I'm in a city, I use public transit. I can take the bus anywhere in the city for 60 cents between 9AM and 4PM...$1.20 any other time. The gas station just a couple blocks down the street from where I live charges $3.42 a gallon for unleaded...$3.67 a gallon for super unleaded. I'd say I'm saving a good chunk of change by not driving...and helping reduce our dependence on oil and nature's resources while cutting down on pollution at the same time.
By the way, I didn't wish you Happy Birthday yet, either...and best wishes for many, many more!!!
I never heard of Earth hour before. I'd be happy to participate -- and spread the word to my family and friends.
My oldest just came onto my msn looking for help to come up with a topic to write a newspaper article about... guess what I suggested? LOL Maybe Oshawa will get onboard too.
We went through a power outage up here a couple of years ago - fortunately it was in the summer and we could make do with the BBQ etc, etc...
but some people died as a result of it.
It sure drove home the message re: our dependance on energy for me. We have to do a MUCH better job of taking care of the resources we are blessed with - otherwise, nothing else we do is going to matter.
p.s. We (including literally my family in St. Louis) were hit with bad power outages twice in one year: summer and winter. They were really hard on the poor and elderly, and weren't that great on anyone else. All the more reason to make sure we don't use up our resources, because we will always need them!
I have a friend in Manila, I'll have to email her about this too.
