Ok it's just a temp job for a month, but it's something ;o)! And I think if I feel comfortable I can let the temp place know I can be available until my husband gets something. (throughout this I will be linking to articles I have written in the past about certain things...so watch for the links ;o)).
My husband graduated in a 4 year college over a year and 1/2 ago & no one will give him a job! He graduated in Business Finance and he has no job experience under his belt & every where he applies they say they want at least 2 years experience. Tell me how does someone get experience when no one will give it to them?? It's very frustrating & trying on my husband I am sure. I am sure his confidence has been really shattered because of this we are going through. We have been survivng for this long on one income and with a Domino's Pizza delivery salary. (so tip your pizza drivers well please ;o)).
So here is my story & why I think maybe I need to be the one to get the job.
When I was 16 I was given a blessing & in it it said I would need to get an education (something I never really did) and to get a career to support my companion and children. Ok when I was 16 I thought...what companion I don't even date...boys don't like me...and as I continued to read this throughout my time until I got married I thought the same thing. (I didn't get married until I was 24. Which is still fairly young ;o).) I worked at a call center and started out in data entry and did that for 5 years plus phone calls. Then I got married and quit when we move to UT. Then I got a temp data entry job and it turned into a full time position. I worked for that company for 5 years & I was trained in MANY areas (data entry, shipping, receiving, truck loading, inventory control, inventory stocking, forklifting, insulated box making, shipping coordination (my main job when I quit), part time receptionist (covered for the receptionist when she went to lunch), truck logistics, etc...mainly warehousing.)
In a way I can see that experience can & may be a bit more important than college...now don't get me wrong I think that someone that goes to college shows dedication & even strength in knowledge in that particular area. I think that if someone goes against me for a position and they have a college degree that they should get the job over me.
When I quit my job in UT it was because we moved out of state. Before we left I had this strong feeling and even this voice in my head that was so very clear that said, "YOU will need to get the job when you move to _ _ _ _ _" (I don't like to say where I am from...some of you know...some of you may not ;o)). My thoughts turned to my blessing when I was 16, but I ignored the voice until now. I also had just had my baby girl and I wasn't going to do what I did with my boy & put them both in child care. I breastfed both kids for a year each. With my boy I had to pump 3 times a day at work & had no social time because my breaks were in the warehouse bathroom. I even got a temp fired because she kept knocking on the door (when there was another bathroom around the corner) and I could tell she was trying to be annoying. She didn't know my situation, but I felt it was rude to disrupt someone in the bathroom (even if I wasn't going haha). When I went to my boss and let him know the situation...she didn't come the next day & I am sure she was let go from the position. Now if any of you have temped before just to let you know the people that actually work for the company have huge pull if you want to come back the next day or even be considered for a position. I mean I got the job with this warehouse because I got to really know the inventory coordinator well and when the boss asked who she would rather work with she chose me. My husband asked a stupid stupid question when he worked at the school bookstore as a temp...."Do the camera's always watch us?" And I guess he kept looking at them. My husband takes after his momma in that uncomfortable feeling of someone watching you, and coming across as maybe shifty. They are not at all like that. Unfortunatly the person that worked there didn't like that he had asked that (and believe me I asked him why he would ask such a stupid question...he was working with money!!) And he just said it made him uncomfortable. That temp agency let him go from the position and they never called him back. Which really upset me & made me want to march down there with our 2 beautiful children and just go off on them. But it isn't my place to do so & I can kind of see their thinking. They don't know my husband and they don't really know his record (which he doesn't have one haha.)
Ok so my husband went to the Goodwill Staffing and they offered him a data entry job & he didn't think he would be able to do it (some people data entry drives them nuts...I know I did it for 10 years & people around me hated doing it. I absolutely LOVE it & I love busy work! I always have to stay busy!). So he mentioned to them that his wife had 10 years experience and that they should consider me. I thought well maybe...then the other day they called him and said they had 2 out of 15 positions left and asked if I was still interested...so I went right in and took the test. You know when you are taking typing tests and how the written out ones can be so droll and just don't keep your attention so you may lose your spot? (I am a total handlooker LOL! However, I think all the typing I have done on Gather & even on IM has helped me a bit with that in the last year haha) This written out one actually kept my interest talking about how back in the day someone would graduate from college and get a job in their field and work there until retirement. When today many companies hire from temporary agencies and people are always moving from job to job etc. It was very interesting and I told the staffing lady this haha ;o) (I am nerdy like that ;o)). As I did the 10 key I was very comfortable (this part was crucial because they wanted 6500 keys strokes per hour (KPH.) There was one section that I was so disappointed in myself because 1/2 way through I hit the num lock key & so half of the column wasn't done when I hit the button for the next column section!!!! So because I saw it last minute and watched it disappear before my eyes I stumbled to start the next one. I finished the test & thinking I better have made the cut off haha! Then I had to fill out all of this information on myself & job history etc (and I came in with a headache & looking like I didn't care about life with my sweat pants on & no make up LOL! Story about that later...). I called the last job I had & got references & even to make sure I had the address right. Then I called the previous job before that & I called a number I always remembered (because it was the main line I worked on...) it was for equipment repair. I get someone that answered and I asked him if he was in Spokane, WA. He sounded foriegn and he was like what? And he asked me how he could help me with my machine & I told him I just needed to know who to call for employment verification. He didn't understand me. I also wanted to see if my previous bosses still worked there. He finally told me that he was in the Phillipines & I was SHOCKED! And very disappointed the company I worked for did that! :o( Then I remembered last minute another number for the company & I called it and it in fact was still in Spokane **whew**! ;o) The girl told me they still had around 500 employees there. She said there were too many to know any Michelle LOL ( I couldn't for the life of me remember her last name!! It is still bugging me haha!) ;o) So she gave me a # to the employment verification and also their address in Spokane. I called the employment verification # and it kept asking me for my social security # and my pin #? What? I have never been asked for a pin#. So I racked my brain on that for a while & finally I gave up since I couldn't talk to an operator.
Then the staffing lady came in and told me I got 9600 kPH on my 10 key. I told her about my mishap & she said I did excellent! I laughed & told her I was glad I could represent & prove I had some data entry experience haha ;o) She was the nicest temp lady I had ever met! She sat with me for a bit & we talked. I apologized for the way I looked and she said I looked fine and that I should see some of the people that come in. I thought to myself TRUE...haha ;o). I told her that I had stayed home for a year so I could breastfeed my daughter and that I thought maybe I should get a job now. My husband can stay home with the kids in the day time until he finds a day job. So I got this position that pays $10 an hour & I am really looking forward to it!
I will miss being on Gather 24-7 LOL! But in the long run I am glad that I have the skills so that I can get out there to help support my family. I just really hope in the end my husband can get that job he dreams of and I can stay home and be there for my kids. I think as long as one of us is home it's great. My husband kind of talks like he thinks we both should work and I keep telling him I don't want someone else raising our children! Teaching them how the world is & I even hear all of these horror stories of babysitters killing kids and molesting them!! (But I teach my kids to toot with their arms and to play on the computer haha. Not so sure those are good skills LOL ;o)).
Well I am sure a lot of Gatherer's won't even read this HUGH article, but just know that I will be thinking of you my good friends, and I will try to get back to your comments & give back to you all! And heck if you think I have been doing a bad job at getting back...please let me know so I can flood your articles & pictures with comments before I start my job on the 30th! ;o)

Good luck and I am very happy for you.
There is nowhere her that delivers anything. :(
Carol thank you! I will try not to forget you all! I just hope by the end of the day I am not pooped out of my mind!! ;o)
BTW, it has always been a giant circle that college grads can't get jobs because of "no experience." He needs to lower his expectations and work his way up. In finance, that means starting out as a clerk. I did it that way, as did my no good ex. He became a Branch Manager for City National Securities in Beverly Hills, that is, before he got fired.
Also it is a shame that he went through the college program and now cannot get a job. I totally understand what you are saying that he will never get any experience if no one gives him the chance to show he can do it. But who am I, to bad I don't own my own company, I would have to hire all my Gather friends and their spouses or significant others. I would be BROKE.
zz You go do what you need to...kep posting and I will keep visiting you.
PeacE!
and I did read thru your huge article!! It took me awhile, but I did read it all. lol
Good luck to your husband on finding a job too!
