I need ideas....

and I seem to be fresh out :(

I am eligible to enter the university's writing competitions again this year... but I have not written a single new short story or a single new poem since the last competition.

That is SO NOT RIGHT!

Not that I have nothing new for the competition - that I have nothing new at all!

What the heck have I been doing all this time?

I took English because I wanted to write.

Not essays. Not applications for grad school. Not....whatever...

I so need to get writing.

I could cop out and enter something from before.... but that would be a cop out.

YOu should write an essay on how red tape slows down everything and can ruin a person's life. You should make it fiction.

that's my topic for the President's Essay competition in Feb ... suppose I could do both though ... the bureaucacy thing could work for a poem at least!

a richometer that starts and ends with Red tape maybe...? hmmm... first step...check spelling of richometer... I don't think that's right

I've noticed that for a long time, you've only "blogged" here. You haven't gotten very creative, and that's most likely due to how much stress you're under with life and school. Maybe you need to step away for a few hours. Take a notebook to the water's edge, a park, a shopping center, a train station...you get the idea. Jot down random thoughts. Put your life behind you.

Just some thoughts...

How about writing about how much American culture affects Canadian culture. It has amazed me to learn how much and for how long American radio, TV, music, movies etc. have affected people in other English-speaking countries through the years.
Also, I have often wondered how the black people who fled America before the Emancipation Proclamation fared in Canada. Have there been race problems in Canada.
We don't hear enough news from Canada, and the weather reports stop at the Canadian and Mexican borders.

Ruth ...thanks for the idea... but that sounds like a lot of work ... like research and stuff...I've got quite enough o' that on my plate these days... am leaning STRONGLY in the direction of fluff/humour :)

If you've got an idea, run with it Flit! Don't get stuck in the "which idea shall I try?" path - it goes round in circles or else spirals into a black hole.

Sounds like you have a sad case of writer's block. My advice is to take a small break. Go window shopping, go have lunch out somewhere. And while you are there, observe things, stimulate the imagination with images, just let random thoughts pop around in your head. Sometimes if you try to hard to think of ideas, they won't come.

not so much writer's block as just too damn much other peoples' writing to do .... I have soooooooo many essays to work on that it is hard to focus on fun instead of work :)

but I'm getting there... got a poem written for starters... will likely post it ...sometime... still playing with punctuation

One of the best shorts I read was a story based off from this guy's actual experience. What he did was take something from his life and then fictionalized it into a short story. Maybe you ncould do somethng like that?

Many years ago, I wrote a short story about my friend Mike when we were in fifth grade. About half was true and the rest fiction. Very few people read the story, but those who did liked it and said it was cute and funny. Write about some experience in your life and add as much fiction as you wish to make it into a good story.
