Yes friendships and work places are an entirely different issues.

Anytime you work for family or friends, the experience can be devastating to the relationship. I try to stay out of those kinds of situations

Good Article! I would never work for a friend. It changes the relationship and I would not want any of my friends to be my boss. It would make so many things more difficult. I once worked for a woman I actually hated. She was to me a real "Dragon Lady" but somehow we became very close friends and it was more difficult in the office. There were problems with my co-workers. When she had me running personal errands for her on company time there was unpleasantness about it from the others. One lunch time they told me that she left word for me to do some work that they didn't want to do, and it turned out she hadn't told them to tell me that at all. The job didn't last long and neither did the friendship. The owners of the company though liked my work and I could always have a job working for them again.

I also worked for the same company as my husband once and I had to tell him that when we entered the workplace, I was a co worker, not his wife... He kept wandering back to me too much looking for my attention and I needed to get my work done. He was on salary but I got paid by the hour and I had a job that I couldn't afford to stop often. I was making software products and they needed to get out to shipping before ups and fed ex arrived. He had a date as a target for his work to be completed. I had the people in shipping waiting on me and the longer I took, the less time they had to box and fill out the paperwork for shipping.

I agree. Friends are friends and coworkers - well they are just coworkers.

Money doesn't mix well with friends or family. Sorry you had this experience.

I've worked WITH friends before and it can be difficult. I have never worked FOR friends though. I can just imagine what it is like. Sounds like you learned your lesson.

My personally policy, never work for family or friends, or hire family or friends. Working with is a different matter. But you don't want to be in a position of authority with family and friends.

Hi!! I don't think it would work with me. I've tried to work with friends in the past and it just won't work.

I agree. I watched some married people at work, one boss & one worker. They brought their personal attitudes to work. Good & bad.

Life is hard enough without adding extra stress.

My husband just learned very recently not to work for a friend. It ended up being very uncomfortable for him to stay working there. He finally left for another job in early December.

I avoid it because not matter what we expect more from friends and family...whether we are the boss or the other way around....I can tell you from experience that it is hard from both perspectives.

Sometimes it's best to leave it at friends and not to cross that border. Lesson well learned!
