My recycling rant!

     I am a huge recycler. I would recycle everything if I could. My rant today is about the recycling number system. Plastic is numbered 1-7. My area only accepts 1 and 2. Most areas only accept these  two numbers. Why are there seven numbers when only two of them are accepted in most areas of the country? Companies put the higher numbers on their containers and can say that they are recyclable! But in my house they are thrown in the trash because I have nowhere to recycle them. If they are going to say that all seven numbers are recyclable then they should make it easier to do so for the other five numbers! Thanks for listening to my rant of the day!

Good rant, I wasn't aware of 7 numbers, only of 6. My area recycles everything up to 5. If you want to recycle # 6 plastic on your own, wash it up, draw on it, etc. and use it for shrinky dinks. You can make your own shrinky dink plastic out of it.

As far as I know, we recycle everything. The only thing I'm aware of for sure, they don't want greasy/oily pizza boxes or paper plates etc. Other than that, we have a barrel for yard clippings, leaves, and prunings; a barrel for paper, plastic, metal cans, glass etc.; and then one for garbage.

for some reason my area doesn't take glass. a nearby city does though.

My city only does 1 & 2 also. So like you I just throw it away. If I want to recycle any thing other than plastic or newspapers I have to drive 30 miles away to drop it off at the "maned" station which is really inconvent for me so I just throw it away also.

I am not sure what my area accepts. As we do not have a recycling bin. Every time we put something out in a container. Tha container comes up missing. So, we just recycle all our cans. I washe them out and place them in a large garbage container til we are ready to take them to the recycling place.

My city only accepts 1&2 as well. I read somewhere that only a small % of what we send to the recycling centers actually gets recycled. That they can only do so much. But I don't know if that is accurate. It was a little discouraging though.

Here they do not go by the numbers. We can only recycle plastics that have a neck on them. Like shampoo bottles, milk containers, soda bottles, detergent bottles, that kind of stuff. They take any number just as long as it has a bottle neck.

I Totally am right there with you on this one!

I am big on recycling too, and it drives me crazy that there are all those different #s on stuff, but that locally we can only recycle #1 and 2. So I still have to throw away lots of stuff. I hate it.


Altho I do have a cupboard full of butter, cottage cheese, and dip containers, I use them for leftovers and stuff like that anyways, but I have so many that they wouldn't even all fit in my fridge if I wanted them too. But I save them anyways, because I hate to throw them out and have them go to the dump.
