Today is one of those days everything I read in the newspapers was depressing. This headline on the front page of the New York Times caught my interest and the article was frightening:
"Europe Takes Africa's Fish - and Migrants Follow"
It is an expose about the African coast which has been so over-fished that the fish species are unable to breed and replace themselves. This leaves the coastline fish without sufficient numbers to sustain other species, as we all know there is a food chain.
Who is responsible? Foreign trawlers, including those from Europe, Russia and other countries, but also the local fishermen and the corrupt and mismanaged governments of the African countries which border the ocean.
There are many parts of the ocean that are now lacking sufficient oxygen to sustain life, but the over-fishing of the oceans seems too improbable to even imagine. Many of us are afraid of the effects of global warming, which of course affects the oceans, but there are other ways to hasten the demise of humanity. Over-fishing is obviously one of those ways.
I guess we all need to get serious about finding ways to feed not just ourselves but poor people around the world. We also need a way to slow the population growth. Flag waving is not going to do it, my friends. We need to seriously reconsider our lifestyles and values. Just my take and I'd love to hear yours.

Good article but a downer.
It's very sad to read more and more articles about how we're killing ourselves off.
