In my earlier article about Deltiology (aka postcard collecting), I stated that one of the great things I enjoy about postcards is the brief glimpse we get into others' lives. Sometimes a story is evident. Sometimes it isn't. I happened upon one recently that is very interesting and I wanted to get your take...
Cancelled on Aug 16, 1952 (or 6, can't tell) in Wilmington, DE
Signed by "Marian", it is addressed to a Mr. George (whose last name will remain a mystery) at Simms Restaurant (9th Street & the Boardwalk) in Ocean City, NJ.

This is the postcard she sent.
It's a postcard view of the duPont Hotel in Rodney Square,
downtown Wilmington, DE.

This is a postcard view of Simms' Restaurant in the 1960's.
Not sure if it stil excists or not. (found on the 'net)
It reads:
"I hope I'm not being too presumptuous since I haven't heard a word from you for almost 6 weeks, but I thought I'd let you know that Mom and I are planning on going down to Ocean City on Friday 8/26 for the day. We had planned on this last Thursday but 'Connie' discouraged that. We hope to be on the 20th Street beach in the afternoon and, of course, on the boards in the evening. Maybe we'll see you -?? Hope you're well and don't work too hard.
"P.S. - This is all in the event that 'Diane' isn't here by then."
At the top she's added: "Sorry - this is the only address I know."
Relative? Cousin? Lost lover? I thought it odd to have names in quotation marks.
All I can say is that I have researched the male's name (a unusual one, indeed) and have come up with an interesting possibility. There was a Russian immigrant, one of thousands resettled in the US by a certain church denomination. He was brought to a local college where he worked as a janitor and four years later he was invited to become a faculty member (1952). He did marry --- but it was to a woman of a different name. I don't know when they married ... all I know is that his wife was born in 1928. That puts him at about thirty years old in 1952. Did he marry before or after the postcard? Did he ever get the postcard? If this was a long lost lover, did he ever know that she was trying to find him and schedule another meeting?
Wouldn't this make an interesting start to a romance novel?
