In front of the local Goodwill store, there's a barrel full of skis waiting to be purchased by the novice (or wannabe) skiers mesmerized the flutter of snowflakes that fell last week. And what do we see, waiting for those beginners, in the adjacent barrel? Could that be a subtle warning, a "buyer beware"? All I know is, the second barrel was about half-full a couple of weeks ago, and since the ski season kicked into high gear, it's nearly empty....

This should be linked next to a photo of an ER room, with people in ski clothes coming out with casts on their leg. I'm the idiot who didn't even get my leg broken in any honorable way, racing down a ski slope but simply from exiting improperly from a ski lift. THe shame! At least the guy who got stuck WITH me didn't break his leg but cursed me out instead. I deserved it. No one should ski without knowing how to get off a ski lift. Or on one.

Jane--I separated my shoulder bumping into a doorway in the dark, a few days before I was supposed to go on my first ski trip.

Me: can I go skiing this weekend?
Doctor: I don't think you should EVER go skiing.

I'm not sure if he was talking about my injury or my obvious clumsiness, but I took his advice to heart.

I've never been skiing. But if I decided to, I doubt I'd buy my skis at Goodwill. I'd need all the help I could get.

I've never been snow-skiing--I danced in high school and college and couldn't afford to break anything. Then I taught dance for a while and really couldn't afford to break anything! But I empathize with the getting off/getting on thing. That looks to be the most difficult part. Anyone seen Larry Miller's ski bit? He had lots of trouble.
