extras: coconut (toasted), frozen bag mixed melon, lemon flavored yogurt
Blend pistachios with a bit of wasabi to make a thick paste. Spread over beef and marinate overnight. Roast til desired doneness is reached (RARE for me, please).
Stir fry broccoli in a bit of oil. Toss with wasabi and salt to taste. Serve with carved beef.
Toss balled watermelon with frozen fruit (thawed), yogurt and just before serving, the coconut. Garnish with additional pistachios.
Now I am trying to think of another direction to go in.
2. Watermelon
3. Broccoli
4. Wasabi
5. Pistachios
Extras:
1. Garlic cloves
2. Red wine
3. Red onions
Pistachio-Crusted Prime Rib with Vegetable Stir-Fry
Peel and mince garlic cloves. Shell pistachios and roast kernels in a skillet until crisp. Reduce to a rough meal in a food process or or blender. Create a paste with pistachios, wasabi, salt, pepper and garlic and rub all over outside of well-trimmed prime rib. Allow to marinate for 1 hour or more.
Roast the prime rib until rare-to-medium-rare depending on preference.
Blanch the broccoli in boiling water, then stir-fry broccoli and red onions with a bit of salt, pepper and garlic.
When prime rib is done, make gravy from roast drippings and red wine. Serve wasabi-pistachio-crusted prime rib with gravy and stir-fried broccoli and onions.
Drink the rest of the red wine.
Chill, slice and serve the watermelon for a simple end to the meal.
Spam away, Katie. Why don't you write another "I'm Bored" article? I'll come and play.
Tamara, I have never made one!
w/watermelon ice for dessert
Shannon, you and I seem to think along some similar lines when it comes to certain recipes. I took a look at the core ingredients here, sat back for a minute or two, and knew exactly where the wasabi and pistachios were going.
The other thought I had was to take rosemary and new potatoes instead of the garlic and onions. Dice the potatoes up and oven-broil them in olive oil with rosemary, salt and pepper. Serve that with the stir-fried broccoli and the beef as above.
asian inspired w/sesame and tamari and optional mandarin or apple raisin vinegar combo
I am not a big rosemary eater, but one of the ways I do like it is roasted with potatoes :) You are right, we do think along similar lines.
I like the idea of doing something with sesame and tamari. What if you marinated strips of the prime rib in tamari (extra #1) , wasabi and sesame oil, before stir-frying? You could throw in the broccoli, maybe some red bell peppers (extra #2) and garlic (#3), and add the pistachios as a last-minute garnish.
Please post the recipe and pics Lynn, showing how this whole thing works!
I am also a purest when it comes to prime rib and watermelon.
So I would do a duo of steaks...
I would roast the prime rib brushed with olive oil and give it some cracked black pepper and salt rubbin...
and cut some nice meaty watemelon steaks and drizzle them with saki
I would make some sweet wasabi compound butter and freeze mold it into flower blossom shapes to dress the prime with at serving
I would roast the pistachios with a bit of oil and wasabi, cool them
soak raisins to soften them in some of the saki
slightly steam the broccoli
and then toss the pistachios, raisins and broccoli with a tad of wasabi, sugar and seasoning to taste and chill
I would probably very thinly slice the prime for a clean presentation along the center of the plate with the watermelon steak to one side and the broccoli salad on the other. and provide aujus in small tea cups and finger bowls of wasabi paste, salt and pepper
and of course Saki for drinking
Another amazing idea!
I try not to read what others have posted till I decide on something...then read to see if I am duplicating...
it is so cool to see all the different ideas others come up with with the same basic ingredients
where do you pull the lists' ingredients from?
I lead such a simple life now, I dont keep a lot of extras aruond me. this is really good for me cause now...if I "catch" some items at market that I usually might not consider I wil look at them differently, and your challenge insists that I keep it simple but take chances.
I just put a bunch of stuff down on a pad of paper. As I think of something, I add it to the list. So far, I have enough to keep us all busy for a few months to come!
And I think you have really "gotten it". Most of us may not necessarily put the given items together, but it has us all thinking that maybe we DO have enough on hand to come up with a good meal.
I appreciate your feedback! And you should write a list of five. I get tired of doing it all the time ;)
