Title: Down Home Cookin' Without the Down Home Fat

In addition to the recipes in this book there is a very informative 19 page
introduction section with things like grocery shopping tips, how to save money
with coupons, what the author stocks in her kitchen and other healthy hints and
tips. If you cook with children there are many recipes in this book marked with
a kids cooking logo. The author deems these recipes child appropriate and says
most children will be able to make these with a minimum of adult supervision.
This book won a 1996 best cookbook award by the North American Book Dealers
Exchange. This edition states it has new and Improved nutritional information
included. It also says not only are the recipes low-fat, they are fast and easy
for busy people. There is also an endorsement by JoAnna Lund on the inside first
page. This is another one of my finds on paperbackswap.
The recipes are divided into two sections. Section 1 Recipes that can be made
quickly and effortlessly and Section 2 Recipes that take more time or
Preparation. Each section is divided into the following categories:
Appetizers, Snacks and Beverages
Breads and Rolls
Soups, Salads, Vegetables
Main Dishes and Casseroles
Desserts
There are also topical and alphabetical indexes, as well as a place for notes
and it says on page 224, about the author but that's missing from this version.
One thing I don't like about this book is that most of the recipes make to
many servings for our family. Quit a few say 10, 15, 24 and even 30 servings and
it isn't just snacks and appetizers but many of the main dishes, desserts and
breads as well. I really don't like having so much leftovers or such large
batches to tempt me to eat more than a serving. There are some recipes that
serve 4-6 and even a few that make a single serving but I noticed most of the
ones I would like to try will have to be cut down, like I did with the spaghetti
pie, I made 1/2 the recipe and baked on a smaller jelly roll pan.
