OSAMA MEET OBAMA
I confess: - for years I have felt increasingly dispirited about America. Hardly a day has gone by when there hasn't been news stories about greed, corruption, scandals, insensitivity, twisted logic, abuses of authority, "lying mendacity", cynicism, dirty tricks, torture, hypocrisy, dumbing down, bad taste, capitulating to the lowest common denominators, collective denial, thinly veiled rationalizations for justifying the worst of who and what we are; short sightedness, over simplifications and over generalizations failing to do justice to the obvious complexities facing us; crisis intervention often poorly executed instead of visionary planning and thoughtful discussion of possibilities; mis-appropriations of limited men and treasure; wastefulness; the negative consequences of the combined abuses of the military industrial complex, pharmaceutical cartel, oil industry, medical for profit insurance powerhouses and others, to name a few decidely and undeniable negative and disheartening facts about living in America in 2008.
Yes - I get it. So what else is new? And doesn't the rest of the world have their own negative list?
Yes - you are right. But in other times during my life the negatives have been blanaced out with practical idealism, hope, vision, decency, humor, good taste, relative civility, cooperation, bi partisanhip, and the like.
So it is remarkably refreshing to watch - as we speak - the undeniable wave of electric dynamism sweeping this country as the Obama phenomena gains momentum day by day. The Press - both the reporters such as David Brooks, Gail Collins, and Bob Herbert to and common folks alike seem truly shocked in a good way by the power of the political earthquake that has happned in Iowa.
Representative of these comments is: " You'd have to have a heart of stone not to feel moved by this. An African -American man wins a closely fought campaign in a pivotal state. He beats tow strong opponets, including the might Clinton machine. He does it in a system that favors rural voters. He does it by getting young voters to come to the caucuses. THis is a huge moment. It's one of those times when a movement that seemed ethereal and idealistic became a reality and took on political substance." - David Brooks, op ed , NY Times - 1/4/2008.
"...The fact that it is a distinct possibility that a person of color could achieve the presidency is a major historic sea change. We are becoming a better nationand, perhaps, a more inclusive one." - Natalie Rosen - letter to the editor - NY Times, 1/05/2008
"... Sake hands with tomorrow. It's here. Senator Obama's victory speech was a concise oratorical gem. No candidate in either party can move an audience like he can. He characterized his stunning victory as an affirmation of "the most American of ideas - that in the face of impossible odds, people who love this country can change it. Mr. Obama has shown, in one appearance after another, a capacity to make people feel good about their country again. HIs supporters want desperately to turn the page on the bitter politics and serial disasters of the past twenty years. THey have gravitated to a black candidate to carry out this task is ... momentous.... However this election turns out, Mr. Obama can be credited with a great achievement. He has drawn tons of people, and especially young people, into the political process. More than anyone else, je has re-energized that process and put some of the fun back into politics. And he's done it by appealing openly and consistently to the best, rather than the worst, in us." Bob Herbert - NY Times, 1/5/2008
Some Additional Thoughts
In reponding to a cynical commentator I wrote:
Dana - Your hysteria aside - you apparently can't see the colorful display of a truly remarkable political, sociological, psychological, historical phenomena unfolding as we speak. There is a mighy wave been let lose that whatever the final outcome is defintiely good for America and the world.
Far from "an empty suit, inexperienced plitical hack" Obama daily demonstrates a synthesized reincarnation of the spirit of Lincoln, John and Robert Kennedy, the early Bill Clinton, Martin Lurther King and many others who have had real heart, authenticity, decency, humor, vision, fight, determination, and above all the character trait - most rare among politicans - integrity.
If the polls are accurate in New Hampshire Obama is already 37% to Ms. Clinton 27%. If this trend continues he will beat her decisively. And then next is South Carolina. Care to make any wagers on who will win there?
P.S. In the fight against terrorism I think America is creating a stealth weapon that is developing right in front of our eyes. The slogan for this weapon might be aptly described as:
An effective weapon to neutralize the propoganda of Osama is to elect Obama.
I can truly say that today I am very proud to be an American citizen.

How do you do, Sir!
So from that may we conclude that there's a Democratic candidate worth a shallop of cold sh.....it?
Huckabee is the only one talking tax reform .. something we've been needing for a good 30 years or more! The Democrats can only think up ways to tax the hell out of us more and more. This is why they snuck that huge bill through Congress last week .. 35 lbs over over 3,600 pages with 9000 bullshit "ear marks" written in it to bolster their own agendas. Not to mention the 300 "air dropped ear marks" on top of that! Ear marks no one sees before it sleps through to become law! The Republicans received this nonsensical bill at 12:30 in the morning and were told they had to vote on it THAT DAY! Talk about corruption.
Your Congress at work for you.
Democratic candidate: Barack Obama
These are the only two viable choices for America.
Huckabee is politics-as-usual, and shall continue with the
hut-two-three-four
drum march
No signs of CHANGE there
This crisis is not for the weak at heart, sir -- you there up in the threads
There is no easy solution and this is indeed a "war like no other".
They are nearly wetting their proverbial pants at the thought of his winning the Democratic nomination.
They are praying that Hillary wins it.
Where do you get the information about Senator Obama and "international experience/knowledge" by the way?
I take it that he is also green in his knowledge/experience of Congress and/or Constitutional matters, yes?
Wouldn't it be refreshing for a change to have a consistent national and foreign policy. Consistency starts with the character of the leader.
Isn't it interesting that there are precious little character flaws attributed to Obama so far except his wife who refers to him as sometimes 'stinky.' [He obviously sweats a lot.]
Additionally, isn't it interesting that he is remarkably free of criticisms that he is a flip flopper. How many politicians do you know who can boast of that fact on their resumes? This includes your man who characterizes himself as always taking the high road pulling the plug on a negative ad and then in front of reporters shows them the negative ad? Nice try but it doesn't exactly fit the definition of a man of consistent integrity.
gibbs
Can we disagree without being disagreeable.
No one ever inferred Senator Obama was God.
None of the candidates are perfect. What we need is the candidate who is the best fit to meet the needs for America today.
So far the electorate is saying that must be a candidate of CHANGE
That is where the Citizenry -- you and I come in, right?
You said,
"As every President ATTEMPTS to do.. but it is unbearable once it all gets filtered through Congress and the Senate."
Two snipers terrorized an entire section of the country and were only caught because the knot heads fell asleep AT THE WHEEL. Imagine what well trained fighers could do.
This business of division needs to stop! It is okay for each Party to represent the ideals and needs of its constituents, but the needs of the country overall must come first.
HOW MANY OF US HAVE SERVED THERE TO KNOW JUST WHAT THEY HAVE FACED WHILE WE WANT TO INDICT THEM FOR ATROCITIES -- LET THEM ALONE!!!
It is a military matter.
We have enough on our hands right here, believe me!
Gibbs.. it's good to see the young fired up .. I see it in the Huckabee camp as well.
The terrorists will attack us again. That is going to happen. I have no doubt about it. And I do have family in Iraq and yes they are eager to get home .. in one piece.. and yes they see the progress and yes.. they are scared to death.
Why do you think there have been so many efforts at dividing us. . .
I am with Obama on this one:
No Red States or Blue States, but the United States of America!!!!!!
~Senator Barack Obama
Iowa Victory Speech
I've said many times if I was President when 9-11 went down I would have simply thrown New York some extra cash and called the entire mess a "Police Action".. that would have been the easy way out. It wouldn't have meant squat but I would have kept my ass out of trouble with the folks.. for awhile.
Take a look at Obama's Congressional Record. Just look at the times he has reached across the aisle to Republicans. Republicans love it, but simultaneously, now that he is a contender for President they hate it!
He is the candidate they hate to love. He is not just talking it, he has done it, and that is why they do not want him to win the nomination.
I don't think Huckabee has the legs to do anything after Iowa Dan. Go with Romney.
I agree with Jeff. Huckabee does not have this thing tied up.
Republicans are tooo hard on him and his stance on the war!
How many? Tell me!!!!
