THE OBAMA PHENOMENON: THE WAR ON TERROR AND THE TERRIBLE

                                     OSAMA MEET OBAMA

I confess: - for years I have felt increasingly dispirited about America. Hardly a day has gone by when there hasn't been news stories about greed, corruption, scandals, insensitivity, twisted logic, abuses of authority, "lying mendacity", cynicism, dirty tricks, torture, hypocrisy, dumbing down, bad taste, capitulating to the lowest common denominators, collective denial, thinly veiled rationalizations for justifying the worst of who and what we are; short sightedness, over simplifications and over generalizations failing to do justice to the obvious complexities facing us; crisis intervention often poorly executed instead of visionary planning and thoughtful discussion of possibilities; mis-appropriations of limited men and treasure; wastefulness; the negative consequences of the combined abuses of the military industrial complex, pharmaceutical cartel, oil industry, medical for profit insurance powerhouses and others,  to name a few decidely and undeniable negative and disheartening facts about living in America in 2008.

Yes - I get it. So what else is new? And doesn't the rest of the world have their own negative list?

Yes - you are right. But in other times during my life the negatives have been blanaced out with practical idealism, hope, vision, decency, humor, good taste, relative civility, cooperation, bi partisanhip, and the like.

So it is remarkably refreshing to watch - as we speak - the undeniable wave of electric dynamism sweeping this country as the Obama phenomena gains momentum day by day. The Press - both the reporters such as David Brooks, Gail Collins, and Bob Herbert to and common folks alike seem truly shocked in a good way by the power of the political earthquake that has happned in Iowa.

Representative of these comments is: " You'd have to have a heart of stone not to feel moved by this. An African -American man wins a closely fought campaign in a pivotal state. He beats tow strong opponets, including the might Clinton machine. He does it in a system that favors rural voters. He does it by getting young voters to come to the caucuses. THis is a huge moment. It's one of those times when a movement that seemed ethereal and idealistic became a reality and took on political substance." - David Brooks, op ed , NY Times - 1/4/2008.

"...The fact that it is a distinct possibility that a person of color could achieve the presidency is a major historic sea change. We are becoming a better nationand, perhaps, a more inclusive one." - Natalie Rosen - letter to the editor - NY Times, 1/05/2008

"... Sake hands with tomorrow. It's here. Senator Obama's victory speech was a concise oratorical gem. No candidate in either party can move an audience like he can. He characterized his stunning victory as an affirmation of "the most American of ideas - that in the face of impossible odds, people who love this country can change it. Mr. Obama has shown, in one appearance after another, a capacity to make people feel good about their country again. HIs supporters want desperately to turn the page on the bitter politics and serial disasters of the past twenty years. THey have gravitated to a black candidate to carry out this task is ... momentous.... However this election turns out, Mr. Obama can be credited with a great achievement. He has drawn tons of people, and especially young people, into the political process. More than anyone else, je has re-energized that process and put some of the fun back into politics. And he's done it by appealing openly and consistently to the best, rather than the worst, in us." Bob Herbert - NY Times, 1/5/2008

Some Additional Thoughts

In reponding to a cynical commentator I wrote:

Dana - Your hysteria aside - you apparently can't see the colorful display of a truly remarkable political, sociological, psychological, historical phenomena unfolding as we speak. There is a mighy wave been let lose that whatever the final outcome is defintiely good for America and the world.

Far from "an empty suit, inexperienced plitical hack" Obama daily demonstrates a synthesized reincarnation of the spirit of Lincoln, John and Robert Kennedy, the early Bill Clinton, Martin Lurther King and many others who have had real heart, authenticity, decency, humor, vision, fight, determination, and above all the character trait - most rare among politicans - integrity.

If the polls are accurate in New Hampshire Obama is already 37% to Ms. Clinton 27%. If this trend continues he will beat her decisively. And then next is South Carolina. Care to make any wagers on who will win there?

P.S. In the fight against terrorism I think America is creating a stealth weapon that is developing right in front of our eyes. The slogan for this weapon might be aptly described as:

An effective weapon to neutralize the propoganda of Osama is to elect Obama.

I can truly say that today I am very proud to be an American citizen.

I still have some doubts about his experience, particularly in international affairs. But if he wins the nomination, I will surely vote for him. There isn't a Republican candidate worth "a bucket of warm spit," as a famous old politician from Texas, "Cactus" Jack Garner, once characterized his role as VIce President under FDR.

I LOVE this. What an enjoyable read. Cleverly written. I am Nalita, referred to this article by a friend who said it would perk up my day since thunder and lightning (I live in California) is dulling it.

How do you do, Sir!

"The hardest thing in the world to understand is the income tax." Albert Einstein

Huckabee is the only one talking tax reform .. something we've been needing for a good 30 years or more! The Democrats can only think up ways to tax the hell out of us more and more. This is why they snuck that huge bill through Congress last week .. 35 lbs over over 3,600 pages with 9000 bullshit "ear marks" written in it to bolster their own agendas. Not to mention the 300 "air dropped ear marks" on top of that! Ear marks no one sees before it sleps through to become law! The Republicans received this nonsensical bill at 12:30 in the morning and were told they had to vote on it THAT DAY! Talk about corruption.

Dan - I like your enthusiasm but if as I suspect Obama again shines in New Hampshire while Huckabee plays his guitar, I think the momentum re South Carolina and beyond is going to elevate my guy over your guy. However - all is yet to be played out and we will eventually see who is the best predictor.

And about that bill, President Bush said he would give it the nod IF Congress came up with 49 Billion for funding the troops. Problem is, not even he had time to read the stupid thing! Who did have the time?

Your Congress at work for you.

I'm going to listen to Obama .. the only Demo worth listening to .. and sees what the man has to say but so far Huckabee has made more sense on his guitar then anything I heard out of Obama. They are all fooling themselves if ANY of them truly believes we can just pull up stakes from Iraq and bring the troops home. IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN. Why? BECAUSE OUR ENEMIES WILL NOT STAY HOME.

We Americans have had a good laugh (after all the cry'n) at Osa-Ma-Ass bin LarDen but the reality is he is dead serious about destroying the United States and I don't see him giving up on that idea any time soon. Hell, a good many people are too ignorant to fully understand how much this man hates our guts because we can't believe that anyone in the world would hate us. So all the crap falls on President Bush. President Clinton tried to take the dirtbag out but he knew full well the American people .. as bin Larden has been saying all along since he declare war on us in 1996 .. had no stomach for it and could not go the distance.

Republican candidate: Ron Paul
Democratic candidate: Barack Obama

These are the only two viable choices for America.

Huckabee is politics-as-usual, and shall continue with the
hut-two-three-four
drum march

No signs of CHANGE there

Now the foolish Democrats are all on this asinine bandwagon that we need to cut and run .. just cut and run and we'll be better off! HA! KEEP ON DREAMING. Hell is going to follow us home. All the good intentions in the world will not settle this issue. All the back room negotiations will not make our enemies go away. President Bush saw this early on. YOU CAN NOT DEAL WITH TERRORIST .. who by the way see themselves as FREEDOM FIGHTERS and they see themselves as fighting for their very survival. It's not a game with them, it's not something that they CAN walk away from. And they won't. They have proven themselves to be extremely dedicated and tested-by-fire.. the sort of fire most Americans have never had to dealt with.

There is no easy solution and this is indeed a "war like no other".

Additionally friends, Republicans -- at least the ones speaking on CSPAN, CNN and MSNBC -- do not share your view about Senator Obama.

They are nearly wetting their proverbial pants at the thought of his winning the Democratic nomination.

They are praying that Hillary wins it.

Where do you get the information about Senator Obama and "international experience/knowledge" by the way?

I take it that he is also green in his knowledge/experience of Congress and/or Constitutional matters, yes?

Dan you obviously have not been listening to Obama. He is not saying that the troops will all be pulled out in 6 months - he is a realist. He like all the other realists are seeking a phased withdrawal. But he is also trying to put an end to our unilateral messanic belief that it our God given duty and responsbility to impose democracy on the world whether they like it or not when indeed what we are really doing is making the world "safe for hypocrisy."

Wouldn't it be refreshing for a change to have a consistent national and foreign policy. Consistency starts with the character of the leader.

Isn't it interesting that there are precious little character flaws attributed to Obama so far except his wife who refers to him as sometimes 'stinky.' [He obviously sweats a lot.]

Additionally, isn't it interesting that he is remarkably free of criticisms that he is a flip flopper. How many politicians do you know who can boast of that fact on their resumes? This includes your man who characterizes himself as always taking the high road pulling the plug on a negative ad and then in front of reporters shows them the negative ad? Nice try but it doesn't exactly fit the definition of a man of consistent integrity.

The American voter has this fantasy that all they need do is vote for the guy that seems the most likeable and the most likely to do exactly what he says he is going to do. NEWS FLASH: IT HAS NEVER HAPPENED THAT WAY. Do you know why? Because it's not his choice alone. BOTH parties work to knife each other in the back ALL ALONG THE WAY.. and you know who wins? Anyone who tells you he (or she) is going to bring the troops home by such and such a time is SKIRTING THE ISSUE and may very well be putting YOU in harms way.

Two snipers terrorized an entire section of the country and were only caught because the knot heads fell asleep AT THE WHEEL. Imagine what well trained fighers could do.

The REAL question here is regardless of who makes it into the White House are we .. the American people.. going to back them or are we going to turn tail and run out on them? IF Obama makes it to the White House I WILL SUPPORT HIS DECISIONS. Because I believe as Americans if we are going to defeat the enemy (is there a choice??) then we MUST sick together.

One thing about Americans: as a united front, there is nothing NOTHING that can stop us.

Why do you think there have been so many efforts at dividing us. . .

One thing I agree with Hillary on .. and this is not easy to admit .. but her notion to strengthen the unions. HOWEVER, that can not come if we do not level the playing field for American businesses by tax reform. The way I see it the two go hand-in-hand. Here's why: Tax reform will bring American corporations back to the United States while the unions will see to it that the American people reap the rewards on the job. And NO I am not a "union man" myself. But I know of many folks who are suffering because of the lopsided situation we have have now.

Lady.. looks great on paper.. but as with this "war on terrror" it simply does not play out that way in real life. HEY, I can come up with all of these great ideas on my own!

I've said many times if I was President when 9-11 went down I would have simply thrown New York some extra cash and called the entire mess a "Police Action".. that would have been the easy way out. It wouldn't have meant squat but I would have kept my ass out of trouble with the folks.. for awhile.

ANYTHING .. anything imposed on corporations ... will come back on .. guess who? YOU AND ME and all the other 300 millions of us. That is the oldest line on the books. It is a well beaten script to the White House.

Okay, first question you asked about Huckabee -- everybody talks about unity:

Take a look at Obama's Congressional Record. Just look at the times he has reached across the aisle to Republicans. Republicans love it, but simultaneously, now that he is a contender for President they hate it!

He is the candidate they hate to love. He is not just talking it, he has done it, and that is why they do not want him to win the nomination.

John McCain has reached out "over the isle" time and again. Hell, he and Hillary have managed to work on several bills together. I don't see him winning either.

Two of Obama's good Congressional friends, Lugar and Warner (Republicans) powerful Republicans would probably tell you that Obama is not a man of just talk and paper, Dan.

McCain probably deserves to win .. but he isn't going to. The man can't summon up the passion to save himself. Same goes for Fred Thomson .. no "fire in the belly".

This article is dead nuts on about the historic revolution that seems to be turning into a tsunami of hope and inspiration by Obama. I think this article is a little too pessimistic regarding the status quo of American life. yes government and the current crop of politicians leading this country is borderline pathetic but We still live in the freest country with the most opportunities. Government needs to change and it's a great day in America when somebody like Obama motivates the average citizen to get involved.

I don't think Huckabee has the legs to do anything after Iowa Dan. Go with Romney.

Romney is dead in the water.. it will come down to Huckabee and Obama and "at the end of the day" (there's a phrase beaten to death) Huckabee will win.

McCain and Guiliani might have a few surprises up their sleeves as well. It is still anybody's game on the Republican side.

It is interesting to note that when Bhutto was killed McCain's popularity soared in the polls.... very interesting .. we may find him as a running mate? When push comes to shove people fear not having hardcore, brass-knuckle, experience in the White House.

I remember when the polls were showing Bush was behind. But no one bothered to asked all the Republicans who do not answer to polls! They totally disregarded the strength of the Christian sectors as well. Amazing fumble.

I think Romney's Mormonism is a handicap for him. Most people do not undersand the Mormons and the only thing that gets through are all the negative stuff... mostly by Catholic led media.
