my son is in kindergarten and he told me at his pizza party they were given sprite. My kids dont drink pop. So im upset his teacher took it upon herself to give it to him!!!! am i wrong? also im thinking about emailing her..should I?
Most schools these days are pretty sensitive to issues of junk food. I would "rant" here among friends and then compose a more diplomatic e-mail to the teacher expressing your concern as a parent. It is certainly a legitimate one.
Yes I would mention it to the teacher-she probably figured Sprite-no caffene there is even one with no sugar-but I would just let her know your kids don't drink pop for the future!
My son never, ever had pop at home either. Though if he went to say a birthday party and they had it he was allowed, hard to stop without ostracizing him or making him resent it later. That made it a treat though, and treats are okay sparingly. And the teacher picked the right one, as I am sure she wanted to treat them, no caffeine, we don't want that. I would let it go for the most part and maybe just mention they don't drink pop as a rule the next time you see her.
Lori- yes if we are out doing errands..or something and they want a sip..ill give them a sip of my drink or something like that..theyve had it once or twice
umm Thats a hard one.. I understand your concerns.. maybe you should talk to the teacher and have her let you know next time so he can have a different drink. I personally would not have minded a few times like that at school.. I would not want them to feel left out like that.. To me I dont think its a very big deal.. PLease take no offense! I know you have rules and I respect that! I am just speaking my opinon!
I think maybe you could just let it slide this once, but maybe a "diplomatic" email to the teacher isn't a bad idea... On the other hand, sprite isn't excessively sugared, and has no caffeine. ::HUGS::
I would, of course, let her know how you felt. I would prefer my kids to be served juice or something in their classes, instead of Sprite. When I have kids, that is.
At our school, the kids are only allowed to have 1 party a year. At this party (Christmas time), they can have pop, usually Sprite. The reason for Sprite is it doesn't have caffiene and if it gets spilled, it doesn't stain. Kool aid and a lot of the fruit juices stain the carpets and are a real mess to clean up.
I wouldn't worry about him having pop at the party...it's probably the only time all year.
I do not think a little bit of soda will hurt your child. Some of those fruit "juices" have just about the same sugar content. I think, as many have stated, it was a treat. My children are older, and I allow them to have soda, but I limit the quantity. I have a preteen and a teen, so it is difficult to control what they have outside the house now.
It shouldn't hurt to just let her know that you don't give him soda at home but how would he feel if other children have soda pop and he couldn't. For that purpose it shouldn't be a problem.
I would be mad too! I don't want kids to drink carbonated sugar water! I think you should talk to the teacher. She needs to know that some parents are concerned.
Pop in school is a big no no.... and the teacher knows this... be leery of teachers that want to be your kids buddies... and this is one of the ways they do it.. its so subtle.
... I would approach the principal.. and just kindly ask him how you should approach the teacher in this issue... you sorta kill 2 birds with one stone..
be careful though... it can tag you.. the parent as a trouble maker...
now for me... They saw me coming and I became very involved in the school activities.. PTA>.. carnivals.. bus trips.. field days... etc etc.. they knew the parents were watching! Thats our job as advocates for our children!!!!
thanks.. well hes coming out of that class anyhow..is goign to a new school.. because he needs one on one... im so happy hes leaving her class..just not b/c of the pop thing.. between her and my daughters kindergarten teacher..my daughters is more liek a kindergarten teacher.. his doesnt seem very involved doesnt seem like they do as much activities ect

I would just rant here and get over it. The alternative is to have them treated diffently at school and feel like outsiders.
As long as they dont have soda all the time every once in a while isnt going to hurt them and things like 7 up help an upset stomach.
BTW how do you know they got soda? Did you ask the teacher?
