Everybody can win in this dog-cheat-dog world

At eight pounds, four ounces, Zoe was so small I was half afraid to hold her. So imagine how nervous we were when our family's newest addition met Jack, our 65-pound standard poodle, who'd never been around something so small and fragile.

Jack was hopping and jumping and running in circles.

"He's crazy," I warned her.

But he eventually calmed down enough so I could give him a closer look.

That's when she bit him on the nose.

Considering Zoe was an eight-week-old puppy, my wife and I took that as a good sign.

For his part, Jack couldn't have been happier. It didn't last. Within 24 hours she was hopping and jumping and running in circles and he'd been reduced to taking refuge on his favorite spot, the couch, which was just out of her reach.

"She's crazy," I warned him.

He didn't argue.

Six years later, not much has changed.

I throw the Frisbee, she beats him to it.

He wants a drink of water, she butts in front of him.

She even keeps him off the couch.

You're bigger than her!" I remember telling him the first time she claimed the grand prize.

This had no effect.

"It must be his haircut," I complained to my wife, who only rolled her eyes. "And then we had the poor boy neutered."

Beth turned the page on her chick magazine.

"This has got to be my fault," I said. "Is it because I work too much?"

"They're dogs," she said. "They'll work it out."

That's when Jack walked over, wagged his tail, and sat down in front of me. Noticing this, Zoe had no choice but to jump off the couch and plop down between us.

Jack didn't mind. In fact, he was soon snoring on the couch.

This wasn't a fluke.

He's barked out the front window at nothing at all, knowing full well she'll go into a snarling frenzy for at least a minute.

And the water dish? If there's a line, he'll sit in front of the back door. Once we open it, Zoe insists on being the first one out. Then he drinks at a nice, leisurely pace.

My wife calls this a win-win situation. I call it something we can all learn from. The key to winning at home is to not be hung up on losing.

But enough of that. For the past five minutes, Jack's been staring at the television, so I better put my hamburger down and go see what I'm missing.

Never met a dog person I didn't like and certainly I like both your dogs too. We saw an Irish wolfhound (giant dog) dominated by a miniature poodle at a dog training class and I'm tell you she was in charge. It was so hilarious, but it worked for them.

Good stuff Terry. Are you familiar with Ted Karasote and his newest novel "Merle's Door"? There's so many instances of canine abstract thinking within its pages there is little wonder that the book has brought the author the "National Outdoor Book Award". I haven't finished it all yet but when I do there will be a review.

Again, good stuff Terry.

Haha....Cute article.
Of all the poodle sizes, the standard is my favorite. I love big dogs.

Funny, even when we are the 'pack leader', they still maintain their own hierarchy. There always has to be a dominant one. They just let us think we are in control. lol

Yup - definately a dog person. Great article. I have 3 greyhounds, and they do the same thing but to us. The second someone gets off the couch, up Baron goes.and if no one moves - he stares at you, then barks, as if to say "move it". Kayla just stares at you until you invite her up.

Very interesting article--dogs always seem to figure out their pecking order as it were and they seem to be happy with it. Our Sheltie used to do anything he could to get a rise out of our chow--she completely ignored him as if he were no more than carpet lint--until he took his position on the porch floor--then she'd walk up and bathe his face--go figure. Our cats were much the same way, except the younger female was definitely the prima dona of the house and if the older neutered male didn't show his proper respect--yeoww what a show.

Jack should write a book, "How To Handle A Bitch", No insult intended. I think with your help, this could also be a "best seller. There is no doubt in my mind he is the Alpha, what finesse! I will be watching for that book Terry, complete with those beauties. I miss my standard poodle Alfie, from long ago, one of the best watch dogs we ever had. But I do have my little CHI-CHI now, and I am learning about chihuahua land, it is a story that is for sure. Nice to hear from you. You all have a nice 2008. Ellen B

This story reminds me a little of our own canine situation: our tiny 11-pound Bichon, Buffy, literally manhandles our 20-pound male Bichon, Parker! Little Buff rules the roost and is clearly an alpha dog - in fact, she taught poor Parker as a pup how to pee like a male, a skill she mastered a long time ago!

Question: Who's the boss? Clue: Size doesn't always matter!

Thanks for a great article, Terry!

LMAO.... sounds like my house. I'm always reminding my 75+ pound black lab that he's the BIGGER of the 3. We have a chihuahua and a fox terrier, 5 lbs and 10 lbs respectively. The 10lb-er, Charlie and the dog in my profile, will butt in front of Boney (the lab) over and over and happy-go-lucky Boney just moves over. But he will do the same... he runs to the edge of the room, where 2 of the 3 are perched in perfect position in MY bed, barking. The other 2 jump off and run towards the front door, turning to look if "the big guy" is following, only to see him curled up, right next to me, all comfy now. LOL So I guess we should just let nature happen?! Somehow it works out!

Your pets are so smart. I live with a dog who is afraid of our cat (except when there is food involved and then she knows to get out of his way). The cat is the dumbest of her kind I've ever known, and I've known a few. We compare her to a goldfish on the brains scale. She seems to have no memory function at all.

Our last dog would bark furiously at such dire threats as one of those Jack-o-lanterrn faced orange garbage bags people fill with leaves and place outside their door at Halloween and stray pieces of paper blowing down the street.

At least Mickey, the current mutt of the house, doesn't bark needlessly. When I walk him he stares at other dogs that bark as he passes but does not return the verbal greeting. When people come to the door he barks only until we give him the "It's all right" signal (by saying "It's all right" actually) and then shuts up and gives them the once-over with his nose.

I *loved* this piece! Just when I think our Sarah Jane is the smartest pup in the world, along comes Jack. You have yourself two cool dogs. By the way, I love the way you write these pieces - wouldn't miss a single one.

Great Terry,

The tone is inviting and holds you from beginning to end. Nice break for you after the novel, eh? I can tell you enjoyed the write.

You made me laugh and nod: been there, done that.

More, my friend, more.

Pat
