To ping or not to ping is my question...

Every time I think I have gotten a clue, something new happens. leaving me once again clueless. I have been pinged. I think this is a good thing. But would someone please tell me, what is a ping? What am I supposed to do if pinged? I just saw that I was pinged when looking at some of my account info, otherwise would never have known.

Other than a notification email in your hotmail or gmail or whatever email you have, if you accept those, you'd have to go to your profile page to see any "pings". You can ping back if you'd like but it is not necessary I don't think.

I ping when I have private message or specific response.

So, I am still confused, what is the purpose of pinging rather than just a private message?
I can take the "ping" or leave the "ping", mostly I leave the "ping" thing alone. Sure it's a nother way to chat on gather, but it is such a hassle to use. And how do you know if you have any pings? I just found out a couple days ago that a dozen people had pinged me since ping started! If you don't ever go into the edit-your-profile you never know you have been pinged!

I ping sometimes... but I guess we don't get points for it... but sometimes, it not just about the points it's about the friends too!!! :) And I like to ping and say HI to my friends :) :)

The ping thing is pretty new. But works great if you want to get ahold of someone or leave a quick hello without worring it will get lost in their email boz amongst the mass emails.

About time someone asked that quesstion! I thought you had to make a comment in your Ping box to start a conversation, but from the comments I read here, it looks like nobody knows whats what, and whats more, I cant even find the dang thing anymore-where did it go?

i like to ping to respond to some of the comments people leave on my stuff...
sometimes i get so far behind, i ping folks so they don't think i forgot about them...
i forget to check who pinged me back, so if it's not one thing, it's another...hehe
watch for a ping in your box from me sometime...haha

I'm still not completley sure about pinging -- I'm still working it out and it's been what, weeks now. I'm so slow on the uptake sometimes -- grin.

It's somewhat a promotional tool I suppose. At the same time, it's a really nice way to insert graphics and notes of motivation/gratification/appreciation/holiday cheer/etc.... In an article, it might not really mesh well because the article is intended to be more content specific. But a generalized place for "Happy Birthday" or something of the like is good.
