I stumbled when I saw
I was deaf when I could hear
I frowned when I could smile
I was loud when I could bear;
December is the cruellest month-
When it takes away life
When it crushes and withers
soft tenderness from the trees

and lays bare the gold and rust
And leaves us alone
With the naked brown crust-
Pleading silently to remain quiet
and see,
when all hope and color and shine

dances away with the singing wind
to bask on the proud snow peaks-
looking down on the cracked parched
shivering earth -
I see the shadows lengthening

and I say
'come in the shadows of the Holy Light'
and be content safe and perhaps-forgiven
and capture the gold from the trees
in your heart
Look into the Light while tis there
for then-
you may not see, no eyes no more
you may not walk
But the Shadow will guide;
I am now garlanded
With the people
I know the time
My eyes are closed
But I believe I can now see The Light
'I stumbled when I saw----'
