My kindergartner won't let me return this book to the library! We've renewed it all we can, and it's due back next week. He will not be a happy boy! I've already decided to order it for him, so he can read it all the time.
Margaret Wang wrote this adaptation of a popular children's rhyme. In the story, the entire family is trying to figure out where the cookies are disappearing to. Each pet/animal claims their innocence, as they count down the missing cookies, one by one. So who can the theif possibly be?
Our favorite part of this book is the tactile design, which was done by Treesha Runnells. On the cover you can see the 10 chocolate chip cookies, in durable 3-D plastic, glued down to the sturdy cardboard pages inside. Children can run their fingers over them as they count and flip through the book. Each time you turn the page, one more cookie "disappears"!
Christine Schneider drew the cute, eye-catching illustrations. There are Mom, the kids, and a cast of adorable animals that bring the story to life. A repetitive rhyming chorus allows kids to help "read" along once they get the hang of the story, even if they are still learning this skill. It builds their confidence. Each animal has its own set of rhyming verses in between the chorus, and the words used rhyme with the next animal to be accused. Kids will enjoy guessing who is on the next page! The rhymes also mean you can read this as a story or as a sing-song type of poem.
It's a lot of silly fun, the end result of which is a lesson in sharing. We've enjoyed this book so much, and I think your family would love it too!
