Naming The Puppy

For those of you who have not yet heard the news, we have a new puppy. He is a Christmas present to me from Deb. He is a little Boxer who has totally won over our hearts. I had decided to name him Gaucho but that name is not quite working out. It just isn't sticking to him so we are playing around with other ideas.

Since he is such an itty bitty little guy I find myself calling him Goober quite a lot but that is not a name that I would make official. I've always wanted to name a dog Salix which is the botanical name for willow. The breed I'd had in mind for that name was a German Shepherd as they are such graceful and elegant creatures. Boxers are not. They are sturdy, strong and really goofy.

I ran through a list of other botanical names with Deb - Fagus is beech, Quercus is oak, Acer is maple. When I got to the last one Deb's eyes lit up and she said "That would work, I like Acer." So we are currently batting that one around to see if it sticks.

If anyone has any suggestions, we are still open. I'm about to post a couple of video clips and will link to them here. They do show a little bit of the personality that is emerging.

Post a puppy picture...that might help...need to know his personality.
I have gotten several dogs at the pound and have always felt that one of the reasons they ended up there was because people could not relate to their dogs. One of the reasons was the names they choose. Wolfgang, the big lovable hunk of Irish Wolfhound became Wolfie and finally much loved. I suspect his owners wanted an intimidating dog, which he was not. Ashton became Ashes, a tiny mini who was not regal like his name and so on. Naming a dog reflects what you expect of them, and when the dog does not live up to a person's expectations, they are never happy with the animal. I know you are an animal lover, so I know you will choose carefully. Good luck and have fun with him.

The name will come to you if this one doesn't work out just by watching him and living with him. I can't wait to see the videos. Glad you got a new pup. He'll be a very well cared for pup and that is a good feeling to know that.

I always did like names that 'go' together... so if he's hanging out with Pal, I'd probably be inclined to look for something that 'fits' ... although some of my 'fits' have been rather questionable in the past LOL (had birds names Patches & Cream, for example)

I love the challenge of naming pets. I wish I'd had that website Kate spoke of back in the day.

I went through a phase where all of our pets were named after celebrities. It would take awhile for the right name to happen, but they were all perfect except for the cat that still resides with me. He went about 6 weeks without a name and we settled on Hitchcock, because he had a profile that reminded me of Alfred. About 2 months ago (this cat is now 12) I looked at him and realized what his name should have been all along. He has beautiful blue eyes and should have been named Sinatra. That would have been perfect.

I don't recommend you wait 12 years to name the puppy.

He sort of looks like a George to me - maybe Georgy-boy? Being a boxer maybe you could name him after one. Slugger? If you want to name him after a tree, maybe there is a tree that dogs particularly like to leave their sign on. I'm not good at this. I always try to name my pets something that sounds good when being shouted loudly from the porch.

There are some excellent suggestions here, and I love the link that Kate left. A name descending on to the puppy today and he is officially Bogart. His personality fits that so well. He is a feisty little guy with one heck of an attitude.

Now Bogart I like a lot! Every time I saw you or Deb call him Acer (as much as I love Maple trees) I shuddered a little, and Gaucho just looked SO much better than Acer. But Bogart definitely rules!

I like Gaucho... Acer really gives me a vision of a Shepard or Dalmation. Gaucho is original and resembles Groucho Marx who was funny like Boxers are, just my opinion :)

Chris - that's true about Boxers being a comical dog - we decided on Bogart though - Bogie for short or maybe even Bo. Of course, I'm sure there will be a very long and formal name for those times when he gets in trouble ;-)

I like BOGART. It has the sophistication and regal sound for those showing-off-the-pet times yet lends itself to the nice, informal nicknames for day to day use!

Congratulations on the new friend! Names are tough...was talking to someone about it over the holiday...they had named their dog something that could have been mistaken for a swear word if not heard clearly. She was competing in agility and afterwards someone came up and asked her why she was calling her dog_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. It seems no matter what name you give someone somewhere hears its wrong. Take your time deciding.

I LOVE Bogart -- as much as I love this puppy. He won't be a puppy for long. He'll grow into this name. And when you think of the original man himself, he was tough, funny, smart, talented, and he somehow managed to be loved by everyone.

Dear Miz Tonia - congratulations on the new puppy - is it Bogart!? I think that fits and you know if it doesn't he'll somehow let you know that he doesn't like that name. Many times, I'll name my pets something but their personalities don't gel with the names so I listen to what the good old third eye says and guess what - a name change. My two boys, Henry and Charley are so aptly named - they are basic and down to earth...my little girl is Loquita and oh believe me - it fits - we call her "Roadie" sometimes - don't know why but sometimes our long names get chopped up a bit. Hen and Tawr for the labs, Roadie for the chihuahua...Ok here's wishing you and Miz Debbie a beautiful new year - may it be filled with happy moments. Salud.

Bogart is a great name! We named our girl Shane Dixie (she was born near Fort Dix). I love when a name pops into your head instead of trying to find one. I "named" a boxer pup in the mall after holding her for a while ... "LOLA" ... i didn't even like the name otherwise, but it totally fit her.

i got me a puppy bk in may and named her stormie sage my other ones name is rayven rayne and the other two pets we have is cats and there names are maddison midnight and one is little bits. good luck finding a name.
