I have recently been Pinged by a friend. What in the heck is this? Is it new? When did it start. Is it a good thing? If so please Ping me.( I just really wanted to say that)
A ping is just a comment on your profile. It's supposed to make Gather more social so I've heard. By the way, it is not worth any points. If you wish you could see my article on pinging.
Yeah it's new & I think it's just a way to maybe tell people you are still around & maybe a better way to say hey check out my stuff LOL ;o) I wonder if you get points for pingin. hmmmmm Oh also I think it is a way to say hey I read through your profile & we have soooooooooo much in common! haha ;o)
Hello Alainia - great question~ Gather recently had an upgrade and a PING is nothing more than a comment that you can post directly on another member's profile page, instead of their actual content like an article, image or video.
It serves a function similar to testimonials in that it allows you to comment on a person rather than an article. Like article comments, the ability to allow 'pings', and to remove them, is up to the individual user. (Unlike the more common usage of 'ping', it does not tell you whether the person is currently online in the traditional sense.)

I have been pinged repeatedly and usually don't check them til well after the fact. I just never think about it, and we don't get points for it, so I don't make them a priority.
I like pings because it just seems like an extra special little thing. Even though we don't get points from it, it's nice to get a ping from someone who just wants to say hi or tell you something.
