Today Deb brought home my Christmas present.
His name is Gaucho.

She walked in the house today and asked me to go out and help her bring something in from the car. I knew she had gone to buy cat food and since I do all the heavy lifting these days, I was not surprised by this request. I opened the car door and there was this little boxer puppy with a big bow around his neck. It seems Deb had been in cahoots with a friend of ours and together they decided it was time to bring a boxer back into our lives.
At first I had a flood of mixed emotions. We already live with three dogs (granted they are rather small ones). This is a six week old puppy who will be a whole lot of work over the coming months. Then I sat holding him and found myself crying. It was a mix of joy and grief. There has been such a hole in my heart since we lost Buddy, and while this little one can never replace him, he certainly won me over instantly with his sweet boxer face.
All night I've been walking around smiling. So, our family grows again.

Good on ya, Deb :)
But, now you have 4 kids. One of you can stop getting pregnant at any time.
Thanks Kate! I will be sure to do my share of house training. :)
he will be a star

Wilma - I think he will be a fine addition to the family.
Thanks Cindy - I agree.
Teresa - yes, he is going to be a bit of work but there is nothing as rewarding as living with a well trained dog who you've gotten to raise yourself.
flit - you can be sure that this will be one very well photographed puppy.
Madame D - yes, I do know - smiling here.
Kate - he is a cutie, and quite a little snuggler.
Ina - I agree - 4 is more than enough - I so understand why Deb did this though - while I love all our kids there is something special about boxers and there was an ache in my eyes that she saw every time I encountered the breed.
Merry Christmas!
Thanks Nana - yes, it will be fun to watch him grow up - and a lot of work ;-)
Ivy - yes, the returns do outweigh the work - this morning I woke up to a little puppy snuggling with me - he started crying in his crate in the night and after he had a chance to drink some water and do his business he somehow ended up in the bed - not quite sure how that happened :-)
Ruth - he's only six weeks old and very much not housebroken - he is pretty good though about not soiling his own space. We're using puppy pads at the moment since he is so young and it is so cold outside. When he is a little older we'll start the process of housebreaking.
Laurun - his name is Gaucho - it just seems to fit.
Andrea - but he IS cute and so it's hard not to say that - again and again :-)
Marianne - I don't know that I ever thought I would have 4 dogs but we live in an area of the country where that is possible and so now there are 4.
Corinna - yes, enjoy is the key word - it is so cool to watch a little puppy up to all its antics and then just crashing out fast asleep.
Roy - it is a good Christmas - completely unexpected and I just keep smiling.
Lynn - yes, I am blessed. Thanks for stopping by.
I hope anyone reading this who is thinking of giving pets for Christmas, wait until after the holidays. It's a stressful time for pets to adjust to a new home.
Spike sends his best, too, even to the dogs. :)
I know what you mean about never being able to replace that special dog. It's like children, we we are blessed with more our heart gets to grow!
I'm maudlin today... getting teary-eyed over this, cutest baby picture. Smiling happily for you all!
