Books Make You Cry?

I don't cry very much at books.  Movies, yeah I can cry at those, but for some reasons books just don't make me cry as much.  But there has been one scene from a book that has just about made me cry both times that I read it. (I was very close the first time.)  It's the scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows where Dobby dies, and Harry is burying him. I don't know why that touches me so much.  I didn't cry when Dumbledore died.  I was sad though when Dobby died.  What about you?  Is there a book or a particular scene that strikes you as really sad?  Something that you cried at?

I rarely cry at movies, someone might see me.

I know I cried recently reading a book, but for the life of me, I cannot remember which one it was!

There was a scene in one of the Anita Blake novels that made me cry pretty good, I can't remember which book it was though
I have a couple of books that make me cry everytime I read them
Morgan's Run by Colleen McCullough
and
Too Deep for Tears by Kathryn Lynn Davis (I think)

The Three People You Will Meet In Heaven -- I think that's the right title -- it really had an impact on me.

I can't remember crying over a book. I've had to set books down for a while if something is happening to a child. I cry at all movies and some commercials. *rolling my eyes* I'm tenderhearted. (That's a nicer way to say sensitive ;))

I did not like it at all when Dobby died, though that scene did not get me as much as when Harry decided to voluntarily face Voldemort, even though he knew he would die. I covered the pages in tears. The other book that makes me cry is Pretty Birds by Scott Simon; it has two teenage best friends, you love them both, and only one of them makes it to the end.

I have cried while reading many books in my life - the frst I remember was when Bonnie Blue died in GONE WITH THE WIND and Rhett carries her away not allowing Scarlet to share his grief. I cried for him, not for her because I had no tears for her, just disgust and anger.

I am a sap that cries or at least tear up at almost any book that I like, if for no other reason than the fact that I am finishing the book and I feel like I am saying goodbye to people that I know. My English teacher back in high school made fun of me when I told her that I cried at the end of 1984. The most recent book I cried while reading was the last one I finished--Gilead. I found it very moving.

"Tuesday with Morrie" made me cry, so did "The Five People You Meet In Heaven" and so did "A Beautiful Child" about a girl who was kidnapped and found years and years later after she been killed by the man who kidnapped her and is in prison and refuses to say who this child really was and where he took her from......she lived a horrible life and i dread just thinking that this was someones missing little blond hair girl and never knew she was alive and now dead and that they have grandchildren -she died unknown to this day....it really made me angry and sad that a parent or parents are out there not knowning that this girl/woman could have ben their child who went missing......and I cried becuase LE couldn't make him reveal who she was and from what state he took her etc........so who she is will forever remain a mystery.

I cried several times in GONE WITH THE WIND; each reading in a different place.

In THE MERCY OF THIN AIR by Ronlyn Domingue I cried at the beginning and at the end. I can't tell you why or I'll spoil the book for you.

In THE ODD SEA by Frederick Reinken, I cried a few times as each family member comes to grips Ethan's disappearance.

Believe it or not I cried in THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA!

I found the part where Dobby is buried very sad (there might have been a few tears...) but the part that made me stop reading because I was crying so hard was when I thought that Harry was going to die in Deathly Hallows. It must have been when Harry was looking at Snape's final memories... when Snape said, "Then the boy must die" or something like that. It could have been a bit before that. At some point I just thought that Harry was going to die...

Another book that I can remember making me cry was the 3rd. book in the Bartimaeus Trilogy, Ptolemy's Gate when Nathaniel died.

Then there was Lord of the Rings, at the end of Return of the King.

I guess books do make me cry. Movies do, of course.

I just finished 'The Reader' by Bernhard Schlink (an international bestseller and Oprah's Book Club selection) and the very end of it made me cry, but it was still a really good ending that fit the story. I recommend it.

My Husband HATES all things Harry Potter, but he's been dragged to the movies and when I told him Dobby died he cried! I cried when Harry walked into the forest with the shadows of those he loved.
