In response to the writing prompt: Describe a defining moment in your life which made you question or solidify your belief in God or a higher power or something more than what we see everyday.

I've always been fascinated by those who prefer to believe they are a 'mistake' of nature run amok. My apologies, but I'm too obsessive compulsive to believe that for a second. I don't know about you, but I prefer to believe there is a greater purpose in it all for me and you. The alternative is unthinkable: We're all an incredibly convenient well-timed mistake.
Medical science has taken great strides at 'emulating' the alleged mistakes of nature. Cloning is a scientific reality, although science still is creating something and doing so from something that has already existed. They are not far from creating viable life from the basic building blocks found in the Earth. The fact remains: They are still incapable of creating their own dirt from nothing. They must start with that which already exists.
Some prefer to hide behind complex definitions of mathematical confusion to muddy those simple waters and mask the fact that they have no answers. I understand the concept that there is 'something' out their more intelligent than man has been difficult for mankind to swallow since the days before Columbus was running under the assumption the Earth was both flat and the center of the universe. Mankind learned.
I am not a lettered scientist nor am I a mathematical wizard. I'm a trained observer, a writer, a storyteller. By our very nature, storytellers and writers are consumate observers who take the things learned and let them tell the story explicitly. Sometimes, when words fail us, because the subject matter is too broad or controversial, pictures help us tell our story or make our argument in a more compelling way.In short, I say all you need to do is "consider the cosmos."
As you careen through life managing the self-importance of all the things that are involved in your own 24/7 x 365, consider your true place in the cosmos... and be humbled.

When faced with the size of the bodies in our own solar system, the Earth all but disappears...

... and yet the Sun itself becomes an insignificant body when measured against the heavens.

Antares, the largest heavenly body illustrated here, is the 15th brightest star in the sky... and is more than 1000 light years away. (A light year is 9,460,730,472,580.8 kilometers... so multiply that by 1000!)
To say it is a big universe out there would be like trying to get an ant to understand the vast wonders of the internet, and then telling that ant that the internet had no intelligent designer and it's all a mistake.
After you've considered the cosmos, are you feeling just a little bit... insignificant?
And yet you are, by yourself, an infinitely complex universe all your own.
Exactly what are you feeling as a result of this simple visual exercise?
Can you even put it into words?
Make every second of every day count...
... send your own ripple through the universe.
And if you have one, please check your God complex at the door.

I have never seen these photos before, and suddenly feel very, very, VERY small.
Bravo, Landen. This was awesome.
TK - Close to a year ago, the pics made it to me via email. They just begged to be part of an article provoking deeper thought about our place in the expanse of the universe.
Tina - Everytime I look up at a star-filled sky, I can't help but feel... insignificant.
Lyla - Well, someone's been really creative, that's for sure.
Joanna - Sometimes, we all just get a little myopically self-centered and need someone to write us a reality check.
monkey - No doubt its an interesting church.
Baiden - Always a good thing to think about.
Thanks for that reminding & intelligent lesson
I do try to live my life to the fullest, and take each day as a treasure.
Thank you for posting this.
Merry Christmas.
Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together as I really enjoyed it and will be sharing it with others.
Merry Christmas!
Evolution is a theory; it's our best educated guess at how the world came about, based on what we can observe and test. Whether there is a God or there is not a God, "God" could not be observed and tested, and therefore belief is not science. Anyone who takes evolution as dogma is practicing faith in evolution, not evolutionary science. Faith are science are not INCOMPATIBLE things, but they are DIFFERENT things.
One minor point of disagreement . . . . "I understand the concept that there is 'something' out their more intelligent than man has been difficult for mankind to swallow since the days before Columbus ..."
Actually, I think the reverse is true. Man has always seemd to have religious conceptions . . . . regardless of where or how isolated the cultures were. The lack of that religious drive is the rarity and is really more of a modern change.
Anyway . . . I like this one! :)

Happy Holidays to you and yours.
Merry Christmas
Make " Kosmos" here and now in love and light!
thank you
Erin - Jumping off a cliff is one sure and final way to 'prove' the 'law of gravity'. The resulting 'splat' is irrefutable evidence. Or am I missing the point?
