Tancredo Quits: How Will Nativist Know-Nothings Vote?

December 19, 2007 10:30 PM EST (Updated: January 30, 2008 12:43 AM EST)

The struggling campaign of Tom "Let's Bomb Mecca" Tancredo announced a "major address" by the candidate tomorrow.

News reports are unanimous in expecting the loudmouth bully to quit his campaign.

Not able to maintain prospective voter loyalty of more than a couple percentage points (although he has a cult following among the marginally-adjusted on Gather), Tancredo is unlikely to continue to campaign with empty coffers.

It is hard to feel sympathetic for this harsh proponnent of draconian measures against immigrants, especially after the series of outrageous lies and fantastic statistics he has entered into public discourse.

Tancredo was criticized in the mainstream press for comments like these: "Look at what has happened to Miami. It has become a Third World country."

But, his equally asinine remarks about having a litmus test for judges (they must oppose Roe vrs. Wade) and Stem Cell Research ("murder") have been largely ignored.

It is good to see the winnowiing of the kooks begin, but it is a loss for white supremicists (Tancredo's anti-Arab, anti-Chinese remarks would violate the Gather TOS) and other hateful people.

Good Riddance.

Thanks for keeping us advised.

"Amen", indeed Dannielle and Sandy.

I am glad to see him slink away before Christmas, too, el fabuloso.

Stephanie, I tend to agree that, while there are other hateful persons out there, each departure is a victory.

Hey Don, I know that we don't always agree on the subject of immigration.
I hope that the debates can become more rational with the likes of Tancredo out of the picture.

Kris, it is always good to hear from you!

I left a question for you in response to your comment on a Christmas illustration, but you never came back (which was an answer, actually).

I speculated that much of your time has been devoted to football.

Elizabeth, many people are very fearful and very threatened.
They have good reason to feel so.
But, I believe the anger toward immigrants and the poor of other nations is a misplaced, and should be directed at the political classes that use slogans to deny healthcare to children, or medicine to the needy.

"...when did that nut job Alan Keyes get into the race?"

Good questions, Gary.

Keys is a perreniel candidate; he has had no success in anything since he was a minor functionary in the Reagan regime.

Running for office is the only way he can create the imnpression of relevance.

He showed up with a five percent voter preference rating, and was eligible to join the other Republican dwarves in spewing sanctimoious blather in the candidate debates.

Stephanie is right; inciting hatred solves nothing.

I think Tancredo's failure shows that illegal immigration isn't enough of an issue to carry any candidate to the White House.

Despite the hype generated by groups like FAIR and guys like Lou Dobbs, there just weren't enough people who consider the immigration issue so serious that they were willing to open their checkbooks and give "Nuke 'Em All" Tom the money he needed to stay in the race.

It is not hard for kooks to get elected to the House - look at Tom Delay who sniffed quite a few toxic substances in his career as an exterminator.

It is hard to play one issue, especially one as complicated as immigration, all the way to the White House.

Tancredo was so transparently dishonest as a rabble-rouser that it is truly satisfying to savor his rejection by prospective voters.

": It says something, though, that he was elected to the House. It suggests someone is buying his message.

Funny thing about that. The message he was selling when he got elected to the house was term limits. From what I've read, he was as passionate about term limits as he was about illegal immigration. At least, he was passionate about term limits until he decided to run for a fourth term, even though he'd promised he'd only serve a maximum of three terms. Then he decided term limits, at least for him, was a bad idea.

Before that, back when he was a College Republican, he was passionately in favor of the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War. At least, he was passionately in favor of the war as long as he didn't have to be personally involved. He managed to convince the army doctors that he was too depressed to go kill communists halfway around the world, and got a deferment.

Honestly, I've got no idea what the people of the 6th District of Colorado see in the guy. Maybe there are a lot of nativist know-nothings there. LOL!

Excellent summary of the changing passions of Tom Tancredo, wil.

All the passionate defenders of the current miserable war, except for McCain, have never served in the armed forces.

It is no surprise that Tancredo is a hypocrite on this issue, also.

I'm not sure that Tancredo's withdrawal indicates that illegal immigration isn't a useful issue. I think his problem was that enough people saw him as a crazy that he couldn't get enough support. I think that a candidate who comes across as a sane person could get a lot of votes out of the issue.

They should use road-proven technology. Take some of those cameras they use to catch people running red lights and have them pointed at the part of the border where most of the illegals are getting in. Then all they have to do is send them a deportation notice with a picture of them coming across the border.

And, it is a description of the illustration above.

Instead of saying, "your argument is faulty. I suport Tancredo and I am not a 'nativist know-nothing"", the guy demonstrates the point of the article - that Tancredo and his supporters are rabble-rousers given to inflamatory speech.

Inflamatory speech incites those who are given to inflamatory speech.

Then, you have nothing to worry about.

These transactions are very complicated, and often have amusing consequences.

It seems that the South African tykoon, in sending the two million dollars to my account, inadvertantly closed the account and took the money to South Africa !

What a riot!

I sent him a funny e-mail, explaing what had happened, and giving directions for getting the money back to the right place.

What? Did Tancredo drop out of the race? Where have I been?

Yes, Tancredo quit the campaign on Friday of last week.

You must have become so wrapped up in this new romance that you have ceased paying attention to politics.

Tancredo is a nasty piece of work, and we are well rid of him.

I'm sure that's it. Though recent developments have made me doubt Priscilla's sincerity. Maybe she is a guy who lives in Chicago.

She clearly has a thing for young boys. I'd watch it.

Peter, at least, is over a hundred years old (though he doesn't look it).

But, she wrote to me, too, Stephanie.

So, her tastes in men are rather catholic.

I don't think you should call it quits just because she ignores you, calls other guys, and asks for a lot of money.

That is still the motto of this thread.

I may well be old enough to be your father. But I don't look like it in a cruel accident of fate.

Oh, I know she's playing coy. I'm prepared to show her I'm the man for her.

It is cruel, Matt.

People snicker when I try to tell them about my dreadful experiences in World War I.

I am going to be 118 years old on Tuesday.

How are you going to do this?

It sounds a little creepy.

Did Lyndon put you up to it?

It sounds a little creepy.

Not at all. I'm going to phone her tomorrow when I'm at work, so I won't have to pay for an International call. We'll get this straightened out one way or another.

Did Lyndon put you up to it?

He only helped me to see what was staring me right in the face.

Man, this fell so far back on my comment thread, I lost it. Too bad. I almost missed what was happening between the young-old GM and Priscilla.

If you want to keep Priscilla, you need to make sure you only send clothes in size 0-2. She'll never admit they don't fit, even though they won't do her any good.

I hope Matt finds your very helpful advice, Stephanie.

Of course, he may have already "moved on" and given up on this international romance.

I could rewrite it using "skwaler" instead of "squalor" and "errdent" instead of "ardent" but I suspect, at this point, he'll never take me seriously.

Tancredo was a kook and a loser.

I loved what Truman Capote said about him.

It is vitally important that the evil Tancredo return to the center of this thread!

Okay, I can give it a rest, Stephanie.

I enjoy creating long comment threads in which his many acts of idiocy and outrage are thoroughly aired and lamented.

He is, however, "old news", and I could let it go except that CNN had the raving shrewish nutjob, Bay Buchannan, on as a commentator last night, and she talked once more of how she had joined the Romney campaign from the Tancredo camp because someone has to "wake up" America about immigration.

I have never seen a complex problem corrected by blind hatred. If someone could provide a single example, perhaps I could consider it, but I can't.

Perhaps we could propose a trade with Mexico: our criminals for the hard-working immigrants that are willing to make our world a better place. Listen to these folks, and I get the distinct impression they'd rather keep our murders and villains.

Naturally, the trade would be a losing proposition for Mexico, unless we paid them a considerable sum per inmate; however, I bet they can keep them in prison for considerably less than we're spending and still make a profit. They get prisons and jobs guarding prisoners (and money) and we get rid of the crappier citizens so we can let in those that add not subtract to society.
