Every time my husband and I are eating out, I order my usual glass of ice water, because I don't drink much of anything else. He orders his Iced Tea, or Coke/Pepsi.
Then it seems that his glass won't be 1/2 empty and the waitress is bringing him a new glass without him asking. Or she will ask, do you need a refill.
Yet I will have 1/4 glass left or even be empty, and they won't say a word to me, I have to ask them to get a refill. But usually they come by so fast and are gone so fast that I can't even say anything fast enough, so I have to wait till they come back with the refill or come back again to check on us.
It drives me crazy, they will come 10times to check on his soda but not even ask me once if I need any refill, and my cup could be completley empty, they don't ask me. I have to be the one to ask.
I thought maybe I was just imagining this, but then when my father and stepmother were visiting, they took us out to eat, and this happened, and I mentioned it. My stepmother said to my father "did you hear what she just said" Apparently they had just had a conversation about the same thing recently.
Anyone else ever noticed this happening to them?
Now, I will say it is not every single time, there is that 1 in 20 or so time where the waitress makes sure to keep my water glass refilled. It's not that I don't mind asking for my refill, it is just when my husband can have 1/2 a glass left, and mine could be completely empty, yet, they ask him, "do you need more Coke/Tea/Pepsi" then they are off again as before I can get two words in, that is what annoys me.

So I would think that it wouldn't make a difference.
I mean it isn't like I am getting bottled water for free or anything, one glass of tap water isn't costing them much, so you would think they would rather give a refill of water, because soda is taking away from their inventory, water isn't...
That drives me crazy too, when my mouth is full, and they come by and ask so quickly that you can't swallow and answer them before they are gone.
I think they do it on purpose so that they can make a quick escape without having to worry about how you will answer.
Thanks for the comments, J.R, Rob, and Sarah.
Hubby likes to tip pretty good no matter what, unless they are just horrible, but if they take care of him, then he doesn't notice that I was not happy with the service.
Maybe they just figure he will be the one paying so they are extra nice to him.
some places have a 'ask for water' policy ..goofy and it escapes me now the reason...
next time....
when you sit down ask for 2 large glasses...one for you and one for your friend and point at the empty space beside you..then smile with all 32 teeth exposed and reach up with your right (or left whatever side is your dominant) hand and gently grasp the invisible lottery ticket from the air..hand it to your server with a dramatic flourish
and whisper..'you're the winner!'
then tell her in a small high pitched voice you need the water to take your medication or the 'other one' will come out and she is not very nice...
10 bucks says you'll get a bucket of water...or a straight jacket! :)
go here ..i put you in a poem

I am glad to know I am not just imagining this, and that it happens to others..
Phyllis, I know what you mean about the fast food places.. It drives me crazy, I think they give out the smallest so they can tell if you bought a cup or not, when I was a restaurant manager of a fast food place a couple years back, we had a lot of people who would order a water cup then steal soda... We always gave out the small cups, but if someone asked for a bigger one we would give them it instead.
Sheila~ I will go check out your poem, but i think you are thinking I am the other Amanda C. the one without an Icon. People are constantly mixing us up, and thinking I am her....
oh, and I do get the attention of the waitress, David gets madd at me because he thinks I am being rude, by getting her attention.
I have gotten up before and gone up to the counter/bar at places and gave them my cup to refill because it has taken so long and no one had come to ask for a refill.
But like I said, it doesn't happen every time, just most of the time..
