Today, at 2:00 AM local time, Iran's head of judiciary, Ayatollah Shahroudi, issued a stay of execution in the case of Raheleh Zamani, thereby preventing her planned execution by hanging.
The other individuals scheduled to be executed along with Raheleh (1 female, 3 males) were executed as planned.
However, the international effort to stop the execution of 28 year old Raheleh, which was initiated by Iranian journalist, Marjan Laghaee, last week, and was subsequently backed by international human rights organizations such as the Legal Rights Institute and Amnesty International, appears to have been the catalyst in halting Raheleh's execution.
Raheleh Zamani was sentenced to death 3 years ago for killing her abusive husband. Although Ayatollah Shahroudi's order has spared Raheleh from death for the time-being, the order is not permanent. If Raheleh does not obtain the official pardon that is required under Iran's legal system from the decedent's family, she could be executed.
