Personally,I like getting them as a gift, especially if it's to a restaurant I'd like to try. I don't eat out much,so a gift card gives me the incentive to try new places. I also like them to stores so I will buy something for myself.
At work,we have a Pollyanna at Christmas. One of the girls has decided that no one should ask for gift cards. The first year I worked with them, I put down a couple of gift cards and a few other things. She made it very clear that gift cards were not acceptable. When it came time for the gift giving, I got a Desperate Housewives board game. Now I love DH, but I don't play board games and afterwards, he told me that she had told him to get me this because I wanted it. I know she loves board games and I think she was hoping that I would offer it to her.
Last year, I didn't put down any gift cards. I put down Bath and Body Works items (which is what I got) and a few other things.
This year I decided to put down some gift cards again, along with Lemax Christmas houses and tea. I really don't need any more houses (I have a ton of them) and I have a lot of tea too, but they were the only things I could think of at the moment besides the gift cards.
Do you think it is wrong to ask for gift cards for your Pollyanna? I never thought it was but now I almost feel like she is going to find out who has me and makes sure I don't get one.

Good luck I hope you get what you want!
I try to avoid them for friends and family when possible, but do use them for individuals who return everything anyway -- it saves the middle step. They are also good for people who are trying to buy a large-ticket item and want to aggregate gifts from several people (perhaps friends and family who would not normally get together on a gift) to purchase it.
