It depends on whether the other sees himself as something good or bad. One has to choose the good aspects of the other to describe rather than the bad.

Larry M - that's an interesting point. If the person sees themselves as a failure, would it still be tactful to describe him as a failure? It would seem not.

Julie - well, the all-night grocery store is open, so I stocked up for my final week before heading up to Massachusetts for the holidays. The rest is pretty pedestrian (laundry, fixing broking things, yada, yada, yada).

Yes, most of us are pretty much focused on ourselves (me included). It takes some effort to stop, think from the other person's perspective, and be considerate when interacting with others. It's definitely a lost art that is worth reclaiming.

David – interesting quote: true and so PC! It immediately brought to mind a foreign diplomat friend who once told me that "diplomacy is the art of telling people to go to hell in a way that will make them look forward to the trip."
