I started mine at http://obsville.myminicity.com and it grew very slowly to begin with. A few houses, the odd cow, field of wheat. Bit pathetic really. I nagged a few friends into clicking and got a bit more, finally reached 100 population and started to have factories. And then I discovered this:

Yes, it's all in French but it's very simple really. You sign up where it says "Inscription" (that means registration). "Pseudo" means nickname, and "mot de passe" means password. One very important thing. Where you enter your city name you must enter it as world_whatever. For example, mine is world_obsville. When you're signed up, you log in. Then you click "Echange auto de lien" and just leave it to run. Just let it do its thing. Next day check your city. You will have hundreds of visits. Not only that, this automatic system clicks on what you need, be it industry, transportation, whatever. Just click "Echange auto de lien" every day, and you'll soon have skyscrapers. You don't really need to understand the rest of the site but I can translate any part you're curious about.
There are other ways of getting hundreds more clicks, but they require a bit more work. This is the link to the best one:

You would definitely need help as it is far from self-explanatory. The first thing to do is join the MMC Mob dynasty, and the rest of the explanation is available on demand as it's a lot of typing, and I'm not doing all that until somebody shows interest!
